Rumour Mill- Burnley Shotton Target?

22 year old Stoke City defender Ryan Shotton is expected to sign for Burnley ahead of Saturday`s visit of Cardiff City according to the Lancashire Telegraph, although it is not clear regarding the actual timing or the structure of the deal.

A permanent deal, for around £1m, was being mooted but one of our Championship rivals, Ipswich have apparently already offered £1.5m and been turned down. A number of clubs in addition to Burnley and Ipswich have also reportedly shown an interest so we could face stiff competition to sign him. One advantage we may have is that his agent is also Martin Paterson`s but even if we can`t make the move permanent a loan deal may be a possibility. By all accounts, Shotton has also stated he would like a move to Turf Moor after being impressed by Eddie Howe`s ambitions for the club.

A centre back, Shotton is also a long throw-in expert for Stoke and could be seen as a deputy for Rory Delap. Pulis therefore might be reluctant to release the player on a permanent basis since that particular tactic seems to be crucial to Stoke`s game. However, according to the LT, Pulis would be prepared to sell the player despite seemingly being in his recent plans. Shotton made a substitute appearance in Stoke`s opening game of the Premier League season against Chelsea and looks set to be involved in their Europa League qualifier against Swiss Super League side FC Thun on Thursday. The finalisation of any deal therefore may have to wait until after Thursday night.

Shotton came through Stoke`s youth system and although having made only limited appearances for the first team, he does have experience of the Championship having played 30 games out on loan to Barnsley in 2009-10. He has also had loan spells at Altrincham and Tranmere Rovers.

Like the sound of this chap, the long-throw thing might add something else to our game but I hope we don't start relying on it like Stoke or we too would have to find a deputy if the tactic was crucial to our game!!

If he likes Eddie and Eddie likes him I like him too. More importantly he is a defender and boy do we need defenders.

Don't understand this one on the bench against Chelsea but will let him go, saying that after watching him Sunday he could be a very good signing fingers crossed.

Fedup there are 4 - 5 centre halfs at stoke, this lad is a good player with speed but needs first team football. I feel good about this one & feel we have had a good clear out @ the club & can se exactly what Eddie howe is doing. I f we look @ the team we had last year at this time it was slow in many departments and past its sell by date. I know this may go against the thread but we have a quicker leaner squad now and more players will come who want to Play For Burnley fc

I do agree with Cornwallclaret. Our defence is atrocious and we need all the help we can get.

We need to strengthen the defense no doubt, and a long throw specialist is a welcome added string to our bow, it worked well for Stoke when they played us in the prem, but we could do with a striker who likes to get on the end of a cross/throw in with his head, I know Jay does occasionally anyone know what Ings or Hines are like in that department? We seem to have quite a small (height wise) squad at the moment. Ex- dredlox.76

The defence has no height they looked like school boys against Watford apart from Bikey/ Agonou and the departed Fox.

Not sue if relevant or not but Shotton was an UNUSED sub in Stoke's 1-0 win over FC Thun in Switzerland last night

Anyone else on here watched home games at, and on those occasions been a home team backer of, both Stoke and Thun? My guess would be not! :-) I saw Thun beat Aarau in the Swiss premier when on holiday nearby. Strong wind coming off the idyllic lake. On one occasion all outfield players turned their backs on the ball, assuming it was going out for a goal kick, only for a gust to stop it a yard short. I'm not sure how you say 'it's behind you in Swiss German', but I assume that was what was screamed by the fans. A moment of mayhem followed! Thun 2 Aarau 1. I got taken to Stoke a lot as a kid when living in the Staffordshire Peaks in a village with no buses, but with neighbours who were happy to take me to the Victoria. Great team then (Banks, Pejic, Eastham, Conroy, etc) and a steadily improving team now. Have they got a Rory Delap clone?

Had almost given up hope on Shotton until you raised my spirits hollins. I'll be raising more than one spirit if these two join the Clarets.
