Rumour Mill-Coyle 3m Double Trouble for Burnley

Clarets fans will not be too happy reading today's Daily Mail.

The paper seems confident that a deal has already been agreed between Burnley and Bolton allowing both Chris Eagles and Tyrone Mears to play for Owen Coyle next season for the measly sum of 3 million!

They state:

'Bolton will sign Chris Eagles and Tyrone Mears after manager Owen Coyle had a 3million joint offer accepted by his old club Burnley'

Both players are currently in their last year of their contracts so the worry is that the club might be tempted to cash in now rather than lose them on a Bosman next summer. We have to hope though the Mail rumour is a ridiculous bit of media gossip because quite frankly if this goes ahead there could be open riot on the terraces come the season opener on 6th August after the failure also to sign Jack Cork and indeed so far, the failure to sign anybody this summer on a permanent deal.We are now the only club in the Championship not to have signed a new player this summer on a permanent deal with the other clubs averaging about 4 new signings each.

3 million for two key players and to Judas as well; that is bound to go down a storm with Clarets fans. There is no way anybody in their right mind could describe that as a good bit of business and if true it would simply smack of financial desperation. The Mail must be having a laugh, if not then it clearly shows our financial situation is shot to pieces with the club only having one ambition; to be League 1 champions at the end of 2012-13.

'We don't have to sell' we were told, let's hope they are about to prove it.

Well at least Daz Bentley on Twitter has described the gossip as a 'ridiculous rumour' so perhaps we can now all chill out and wait for the next heart-thumping non-story!

Phil i know you're on the edge but i really don't see a problem these two players will not sign a new contract what ever we offer, so next year they walk for free or you sell. I would hope we would get at least 4m for both but lets wait and see, not bothered either way if they stop or go you know Eagles always wanted away from the Club.

Do we want to get promotion this season? If we do we can't afford to let players like Eagles and Mears go. We have no idea what will happen to these two come May 2012. If we get promotion, they might stay and play for us in the top flight. They definitely won't if we stay down. The problem also with letting these two go so late in pre-season, is that we are unlikely to get anybody of proven quality to replace them and will be rummaging around in the basement bucket for Lg1/Lg 2 cheapos. Do we have a decent right back? Er no unless you want to risk dragging Eckersley back from his loan in Canada

I hope this is a load of you know what. How many times does that Judas so and so want to tear the club apart. Got to agree with TMP we can't let key players go at this point of the preseason. Things arn't looking so brilliant anyway with not bringing in any signings yet. If this does go ahead we are all doomed!!!!

So Eagles is going to get us promotion, come on tmp on his day a good player but they were not to many of them last season, and if we won promotion Eagles would still want away thinks he's better than he really is. So we don't get promotion this season and they walk for free now that is bad management, sorry tmp not with you on this one.

It's good to disagree on some things FedUp!! ;-) Wasn't it Brian Clough who said 'they are only opinions'!? I would rather have Eagles performing like he has the past few seasons rather than no Eagles at all. If there is any truth in the Prem Club rumours, Bolton, QPR and Swansea then that is at least three managers who would appear to think Eagles has enough talent.

Sincerely hope this is true but if it is, it shows that whatever Daz says on Twitter can be ignored - so clear is he that we should ignore these ridiculous rumours.

If they go then the chance of getting up are zilch unless we sign someone better which ain't gonna happen. My opinion is we DON'T sell anyone to Bolton or C***e just tell them to feck right off! I suppose the only saving grace that the Mail article wasn't wrote by Nixon.

QPR can't keep Tarabt, Spurs losing Modric, Arsenal losing Fabregas and maybe us losing Eagles and Mears, the common thread is simply that clubs want to keep their best players BUT it is the Agent and The Player who will have the final say. I posted some time ago I was worried that Eagles only had a year left, said it before if come January we are outside the play off places then he will leave for peanuts, if a good offer comes in now you would have to consider it.

Just in case it doesn't read right, I want Mears and Eagles to stay and would be gutted if we lost them both and probably be of the opinion that mid table would then be our best hope with the PR slant we are rebuilding which would be tosh imo and I would almost be more inclined to be in tmp's camp about the clubs desire.

Well I am encouraged VR by Daz's comments on Twitter. I don't think he would be so bullish about telling us all to chill if there was one iota of truth in the rumour. Mind you he is in the English Riviera sunning himself and might have been on the 'aint got no legs' local scrumpy!! lol ;-)

Fed up I don't know what glasses your using to watch these matches, or indeed how many pints you had had when you wrote your suff on here, let's be frank the two best players at the club by a country mile are these two, if you think the combined value is 4m then we really are in desperate trouble, in answer to your question is Eagles going to get us promoted? well quite honestly he has a significant part to play and if you think different then I'm completely dumb founded. This deal is never going to happen but for you to think it was a reasonable propersition then quite honestly mate your worrying me !!!! As for Turf Man being on the edge is it any wonder ... Leicester just bagged an eighth player, S'hton another excellent international winger, Blackpool brought a brace of players in over last 24 hours, and were still struggling to do our first deal ( exclude the loan deal ) no wonder tensions are beginning to rise we are hopeless at the moment

Hollins if Eagles was that good he would be in the prem now, last January one team made a bid Rangers but he declined there offer shocker. So Eagles will get us promoted hope you're right only time will tell, lets just see how many teams let him play or mark him out of a game this season. As for keeping up with the Jones and buy everyone who comes on the market well thats your view. And for the record i don't drink.

I fall into the camp of "Eagles is good on his day but doesn't offer enough all round game or consistency" and "Mears is good going forward but responsible for loads of goals at the back". Factor in their likely lack of commitment (Mears confessed to being in a sulk for the early months of last season) and I'd take the money on balance. I suspect we have a lot of big time charlies now and I'd rather get us back to young, hungry and driven.

Big time charlies though are more likely to get you promoted so they can attract the eye of their next club! That should be our focus not hoping and praying that unproven players and young guns from the lower leagues can deliver. We do not have the luxury of time to build a team good enough for promotion. We have to go for it now or be undone by the FIFA Fair Play fiasco about to hit us in 2012-13. [Edited by turfmanphil]

I strongly agree with TMP on this. Fedupclaret your talking nonsense. Chris Eagles is without doubt our best player. 15 goals for a winger/supporting striker is excellent and I can see him repeating it this season. On his day he is unplayable and the fact is, he has well over enough of those days. He is a constant threat and the kind of player who can win you a game single handedly, even when we are up against things. This is a similar situation as the Samir Nasri one at Arsenal. Nasri only has one year left on his contract, but Wenger is taking a gamble and going to hold onto him for the season, knowing that only success will convince him to sign a new deal. Its the same with us. Eddie should want to take a chance on our best player, as he can be the difference between promotion and staying put, its as simple as that. As for Tyrone Mears, he is also an excellent player who we desperetely cant afford to lose. At this stage, when we have already let five players go, we cannot lose more. Eddie knows that and I cant see the deal happening. Daz's comments also give us some more confidence in saying that.

Yep agree with all of AdamBFs comments 100%! We always seem to be off the pace and chasing shadows. If any of key players do go, we will have very little time to replace them now and in any case seem to be struggling to sign players per se. I am beginning to get very uncomfortable about next season's prospects, very uncomfortable indeed!

Agree with the comments that this is surely press dross, but if it isn't and we end up doing this then there goes any hope of promotion. Eagles on his day is magnificent and a match winner, and he gets the rest of the team going as well. His inconsistency is a cross that we we have to gladly put up with, because if he was consistent he'd still be at Old Trafford. Agree with Adam as well re Mears who is a class act and we're really lucky not to have lost him so far. Whatever happens when their contracts run out shouldn't have a bearing on the fact that we need these two for our promotion push, and if it works there's every chance that they'll sign for us again. I've said it before, keep playing inconsistently Chris, 'cos if you don't we'll loose you.

So i don't agree with you adam i'm talking nonsence so i cant have an opinion great forum. So we keep both to get promotion nothing wrong in that, but these two have wanted away since we have been relegated. So you say he is our best player without doubt thats your opinion and seeing you know what eddie wants you must be very close to him and you must talk everyday to him regarding football matters. It must be hard for you and Eddie to run our Football Club with all these teams knocking on the door to sign Eagles. I don't want to lose these players but i would prefer to get some cash before they walk for nothing which will be the case next season regardless of promotion or not. Just one more thing to discuss with Eddie when you see him next get Eagles to sign a contract extension.

One way to stop this rumour in its tracks by Burnley Football Club and Eddie Howe to come out and say these players are under contract and are not for sale end of. If i was the manager and wanted to keep these players that statement would have been released by now.

What you have to think is that how much truth has come from these rumours so far? Every season we seem to be having offers and interest regarding Eagles, how much is that himself or his seemingly in my opinion waste of space agent who just wants a cut of a sign on bonus? For his faults and sometimes tantrums Eagles is a decent player at our level and a vital part of the incoming season the same goes for Mears. We should not be selling we should and need to be buying!! Totally agree with the comments from TMP and Adam

So its official. Chris Eagles and Tyrone Mears are in going to go into discussions with Bolton Wanderers over a move. This is rediculous, absolutely rediculous. I cannot believe what this club is doing to itself. It is shameful. I am absolutely furious at Burnley Football Club at this moment in time and will be for some time to come. No passion, no will to succeed. For goodness sake just have a little bit of belief in ourselves. These players want to play premiership football, so that needs to be our aim. If we have players in our team capable of playing premiership football, thats where we should be. And if can could hold onto these players and push for automatic promotion, I am almost certain these players would stay. They are our best players by miles. This is going to look good isnt it. EIGHT PLAYERS OUT from last season, and our only bit of business is a season long loan. I though this could only get better, but its just got a whole lot f*****g worse !!!

Well said Adam.Quite frankly the Board has to go and go now. They are clearly out of their depth. Don't they realise that its bad enough selling Eagles & Mears, but to Coyle as well? They have absolutely no respect for their fans whatsoever, they are incompetent and totally amateurish! That's just awesome news, my hopes for next season are probably a low table dog fight when it should be aspirations of promotion! And this board only want to aspire to mid-table mediocrity, Kilby has to go he is so out of touch with the fans its beyond a joke. Eight players out says it all, no strength in depth, losing class players, and not bringing any full time players in. FFS WHAT MAKES THEM THINK THEY ARE GOING TO SIGN PLAYERS NOW??? ONLY DUE TO THE AMAZING SUM OF 3MILL??? They should have sorted out new players ages ago, who is going to want to come to a club with no ambition like ours? We had the money to spend before this, this really is a kick in the teeth to loyal fans....

May I say that at a time when we are all rightly anxious about what happens next because we're losing players at the 11th hour that calls for the Board to go 'now' is frighteneingly close to self-harming behavour? I would also like to add that I had a word yesterday with DazB, before this news was confirmed, about staying off Twitter. It makes fools out of more people than possibly any other invention yet invented. And I don't think DazB is a fool.

Daz B is not a fool, the club though appears to be foolish for letting their own media man die on his own sword by not keeping him in the loop. He was confidently telling all via Twitter not to believe the tosh in the papers and asking fans to chill only to eat humble pie a few hours later having been stabbed in the back by the club. As for Twitter and opinions, they are here to stay and will continue to cause problems for the establishment. We will all have to get used to social networking sites and find ways of getting our message across without fear of reprisals unless of course we want a sterile world of only accepting everything the club puts out without being able to challenge them and the club in return not having any channel to try and defend their position
Report Abuse
24/07/2011 11:35:00

A defence of social networking is a very different thing from a defence of Twitter, if only because other social media don't restrict our comments to a lucicrously small number of characters, but also because they do not give us quite the same opportunity to communicate before taking time to reflect. But despite its built-in flaws, the existence of Twitter is no reason for people to fall into its now all too well evidenced opportunities for making all kinds of people look foolish. Moreover, the idea that just because a technology is new we should be able to speak without fear of reprisal is not one I share. I am of the view that regardless of the medium, we should each of us stand ready to accept the consequences of what we say, and not hide behind the sometimes cowardly anonymity that social media offers. Of course, there are some circumstances when that anonymity protects those who are oppressed and persecuted, but to extand that into a world where a wide freedom of spech is enshrined in law to give rights to comment without accepting responsibility is deeply problematic, and probably going to change.
