Howe on Keeping Eagles and Pato!

We may not have made many summer signings so far, in fact only one with Ben Mee arriving on a season-long loan but on the other side of the coin we have not lost any key players either unless some Clarets fans think Iwelumo, Grezza, Carlisle, Thommo and Kev McDonald were crucial to our plans for 2011-12.There was though the disappointment of not signing Jack Cork on a permanent deal and losing him to Southampton.

Two of our current key players however continue to be in the news with reports that other clubs could be interested in taking them away from Turf Moor.

We have all read about Pompey's interest in Martin Paterson with reports that the Hampshire club may well have made bids anywhere betweeen 1.5 million and 3.5 million.

Chris Eagles too continues to be linked with Premier League clubs, the latest being newly promoted QPR.Chris has one year of his contract still to go, so whether Burnley could be tempted to sell him now while they can and make some money on him remains to be seen.

The club though do seem to be rubbishing the speculation on both players and Eddie Howe speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph said:

"There`s always people circling, but there is no new news regarding any of our players.

"I`ve said all along I want to keep the squad together, keep our best players, and hopefully we can do that and bring in some new ones the other way."

Let's hope this is the case and we do not lose any more players with the new season just a few weeks away and with the squad already down by five on balance compared to last season if you count the failure to sign Jack Cork.

Howe is also on record as saying that he still wants to add 2-3 players to his squad before the new season kicks-off and is working hard with Operational Director, Brendan Flood to try and achieve that. Lets hope we win out on both fronts ie no more out and three more in!

I just wonder what those sure we can achieve promotion this season would think if we lost Pato,Eagles or both and if we did whether they think we would have enough time to replace them with high-quality players before the season kicks-off?

Pato no; Eagles, maybe. He seems a bit too fragile to deliver consistently (I know Pato was injured most of the season - so that's a bit of a dilemma). A few mill for Eagles would be tempting cos I'm sure he won't hang around for another contract.
Mike Mada
Unless of course perhaps if we get promoted to the Prem re Eagles? So in that sense it would be logical to keep him providing he can perform consistently. On his day nobody can touch him, but does he have enough of those days?

Mike Duno have you could say maybe on eagles ? cork gone and eagles would be an unmitigated disaster bar none for me I would let Patto go at 3M in fact I would wrap in in a lovely ribbon bow myself for that ...... I can see this happening they are at 2.5M now ... I cant see this lot ignoring a 3M cos the numb nuts will be thinking 2M for the club 1m back to Eddie for a sticker I am telling Ya this will be a done deal before next Friday ! Directors are far to short sighted to think about keeping quality players .... cue Jack Cork !!!

STRIKER not stiker ! soz .....

Think Mike summed it up in one and in your post tmp ref: Eagles consistenly you have hit the nail on the head if Eagles was consistent he would be in the Prem now. As for promotion tmp i think it will take EH this season to get the squad he wants due to money restrictions at the Club, i still think there are a few players he wants to move on.

Personally I cannot see Eagles being at Burnley next season and for that reason, if we were to get an offer in excess of 2m I would probably sell. If we get promoted, Eagles will probably have had a good season and therefore will have caught more Premiership eyes and will move on a free. If we dont get promoted, he will probably move on to a lower Prem Club anyway. On his day Eagles is superb ( ie Derby last season), when hes not - he is of little use to us on the pitch.

Has there been any news on offering Chris Eagles an extension to his contract, if not it seems likely he will be sold if a reasonable offer comes in. I would prefer him to stay, same with Pato but money certainly talks. I agree with fedup and think it reasonable for EH to be aiming for the 2012/13 season to achieve promotion.

I think its worth taking a chance on Chris Eagles. We should keep him for this season even if he doesnt sign a new contract because if we gain promotion, I think he will stay, and he could be the difference between promotion and staying put. Its a similar situation to the Samir Nasri one at Arsenal and it looks like Arsene Wenger will be taking a chance on his star man. We should take a chance on ours. Chris has been loyal to the club after turning down an oppurtunity to sign for Rangers, wanting to prove his worth at Burnley and he more than did that last season. 15 goals for a winger/supporting striker is excellent and I can see him repeating that this season. He is one of the only players at this level who can produce the kind of quality performances that he can, and if Eagles plays well Burnley play well. We cant afford to lose our best player, if we do I think our chances at promotion would be more or less over.

If EH can line-up a replacement for Pato I think 2.5m in today's market is an exceptional price. Burnley fans simply overate his abilities IMO. I think in his case absence makes the heart grow fonder. I like the sound of Ings - its a good name ;) Eagles would be a shame to lose but there times towards the end of last season when he was so off his game, I think if he stays EH needs to learn how to pace him - He's a two thirds of a season man for me.

When are we going to pay an 'exceptional price' and compete CC? Serious question?
