Howe Seeks Trio Including Iwelumo Replacement

Eddie Howe has made just one summer signing so far with Ben Mee arriving from Manchester City on a season-long loan.

Clarets fans though will be heartened by news today that Eddie Howe is seeking to extend his squad numbers by three before the start of the new season.

It would appear also that he is seeking a new striker to replace Chris Iwelumo who signed for Watford yesterday and then proceeded to score on his debut for his new club.

Iwelumo helped his new team beat non-league Wealdstone 3-1 last night and was said to have an 'outstanding game'! Let's hope he doesn't have one for Watford when they line up against us at Turf Moor in the season opener on Saturday 6th August.

Eddie Howe talking about the transfer said:

'Chris is a great pro and he worked extremely hard for us. I couldn't guarantee him first team football though, so he decided to move on and we wish him well,

'We are working on it (a replacement) because we need another striker. I don't want to go into the season with just three, so we will be working hard to bring one in.'

Talking about the lack of signings in general, Howe said:

'In an ideal world we wanted to get the squad together for the first day of pre-season,

'It hasn't quite worked out like that and we are getting the squad together quite late, which always leaves a short time to prepare the team,

'As I've said all along though, we don't need a huge amount. But we do need two or three quality additions and hopefully we can get them in soon, because we want to integrate them with the players.'

Clarets fans of course have been speculating who our targets might now be but there are very few clues in the media with rumours and gossip almost drying up.

The Chris Iwelumo story he was leaving came from messageboard gossip on a Watford site initially and there was nothing in the media until the deal went through.

So do we now believe forums may have the answers? If you believe they do then we could be signing the following:

Keith Treacy from Preston in a player/cash deal with Leon Cort going in the opposite direction.

26 year old ex-Manchester United, Derby and Wolves midfielder, David Jones

Lloyd Dyer, Leicester's 28 year old winger

How about Charlton's Miguel Llera? Don't think we would be in the market for a 31 year old centre back would we?

The daftest of the lot? We are about to sign Leeds United Luciano Becchio!! Yeah right

Oh well it's all good fun as long as we do get three players in by 6th August!

I would certainly be heartened by three new signings if they were good quality and proven at this level. With Mee that would be say four new faces although we would still be down slightly on last season's squad size with Iwelumo, Thommo, Kev Mc, Grezza and Carlisle having left with Cort looking likely to follow.

[...] extend his squad numbers by three before - [...] I don't want to go into the season with just three, so we will be working hard to bring one in.' - Are you sure he doesn't mean that he doesn't wan't to go into the season with just three strikers? (Pato, J-rod, Austin)

Key quote by Howe I think Nor is lower down- 'But we do need two or three quality additions' Actually I think we have more than three strikers anyway already dont we? I assume the three he means are Pato,Austin and Jay Rod but we also have Alex Mac and Wes Fletcher waiting in the wings. I do think we need a tall striker too though but one with more pace and the ability to track back. Hopefully Howe will find one if they are not already spoken for so late in the day! Howe also said:“We are close on a couple, but you can be as close as you want. Until you get over the line they’re not our player. "Brendan and I are working hard on it and hopefully we’ll get the ones we want.”

Good to see that we are still doing business in the transfer market and hopefully we will see a couple of quality new faces join us before the end of the transfer window. I really believe we will have a better chance at promotion than last season if we do this.

I read EH's comments to mean we currently only have 3 front-line forwards. But I acept that it could be read in other ways.

I hope we are going for quality signings and not young players for the future. We've been there and got the tshirt under Coyle with players for the future, and i hope he gets the players he wants and not to sign players just to please the fans.

Eddie certainly seems to be burning the bridges, and I don't mean that in a negative way. He's clearing the decks and building his own team which is exactly what you'd expect him to do. But we've now lost Thommo and Big Chris, both strong lads who added a different dimension when required , to what Pato and J Rod offer. So I hope one of the three will be a replacement to these two. I'll settle for Becchio tmp.

The most important thing is that we agree on that reinforcements are needed :)

WC, would be sweet if he came in! Tho my dream would be Henri Saivet from FC Girondins de Bordeaux. Cheap and a great talent.

Sounds like he doesn't want to rush the young ones in eg Wes, Knowles. I think we still a tall striker in the ranks for set pieces to nod em home.

Have to say I though we needed a striker since last season, We really are questionable up front Jay Rod - good, Patto like a dog chasing his own shadow and still to prove he won't break down 6 games into the season, and same for Charlie with his builders elbow er shoulder still needs to prove his fit for me, to win games we need to score goals and I aint that confident we have the fire power needed we did need a quality signing not another much of a muchness run of the mill player ! However having said all that we do need to keep the goals coming from else where

For me the most important thing about Eddie's statement was his use of the magic word QUALITY, looking forward to knowing who the two or three are. Could be the making of the team into genuine promotion contenders, which realistically at the moment I do not think we are.

Couple of rumoured strikers we might be interested in-Google to find out more about 'em and decide if they fit the quality billing-Chris O'Grady (Rochdale) and Barry Corr (Southend)

Quality to me means proven at Championship level as a minimum. Anything else is at best a good prospect.
