Howe names 23 man Squad for South West Tour

23 players have been named by Eddie Howe for their South West Tour and all of them are currently travelling down to Bath.

The squad is as follows:

Brian Jensen, Lee Grant; Michael Duff, Tyrone Mears, Brian Easton, Andre Bikey, Danny Fox, David Edgar, Ben Mee, Kevin Long; Wade Elliott, Chris McCann, Chris Eagles, Dean Marney, Ross Wallace, Marvin Bartley, Steven Hewitt, Martin Paterson, Jay Rodriguez, Charlie Austin, Wes Fletcher, Alex MacDonald.

It looks like the club delayed announcing the squad until it was made official that Chris Iwelumo would be leaving for Watford and that move has now been confirmed.

Just one senior player has failed to make the squad and that is centre back,Leon Cort. His failure to make the tour will fuel speculation that his days at Turf Moor are numbered.

Young 17 year old midfielder, Steven Hewitt as previously announced is also a surprise addition and he appears to be highly rated by Eddie Howe after impressing in the Reserves last season.

Only two other players though from the development squad have been included with both Kevin Long and Wes Fletcher making the trip.

A number of other development squad players featured in the previous two pre-season friendlies but there is no place now for trialist keeper, Jon Stewart, Alex-Ray Harvey, Dominic Knowles or Medhi Lazaar

It will now be interesting to see what the line-ups and subs bench will look like for our two pre-season friendlies in the South West, starting tonight with our game against Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium. We then play Torquay on Saturday at Plainmoor.

Interesting to think in terms of those younger players that Hewitt has jumped ahead of. What's the pecking order in terms of cover for Mears in case of injury or suspension? If you think in terms of the recent PL ruling that requires a squad of 25 to be named, we're 2 players light. 3 if you think Hewitt's just making up the numbers, rather than a genuine prospect.

Mate, there are 22 names in that list

And @Dazbentleybfc wrote this; "Cant name 23rd person"

Well spotted, only 22?

Well spotted Nor. Also interesting to note that Cort has been filed away in the van der Schaaf position. Or have we loaned or sold him? Or is he injured?
Couch Potato
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't vdS's contract end this summer?
nor-claret
Yep, he's off the payroll as far as I know and presumably is still on Brøndby IF's books?

This means that E.Howe has really done some rapid changes in the average age: Grezza (39), Thompson (32), Carlisle (31), Iwelumo (32), vdS (32), (Cort (31)) and the youngest of them McDonald (22).. And in came a young Mee (21)

What I am saying Nor is that vdS used to be the forgotten man, and now Cort seems to be the forgotten man. Or has there been some recent news about him that I'd missed? I remember seeing him in the squad traing photos... I think. Anyone know where he is?
Couch Potato
Don't forget he did play against Altrincham and Bury! They forgot about him after that though it seems! Probably because he didn't play that well and he's another 30 something
turfmanphil
Have seen him in training-photos too, but can't say that I've heard anything about him.. Guess he'll move on to another club during the next few weeks...
