Rumour Mill-Iwelumo to Become a Hornet?

Is this the power of the internet and club forums or just idle gossip and malicious rumour mongering?

Well one thing is for sure all eyes will be on the team coach tomorrow as the lads set of for their South West Tour. In particular will Chris Iwelumo be amongst them?

We may even have an indication tonight with Daz Bentley tweeting that the squad for the tour could be announced sometime later this evening.

The rumours simply wont go away and with journalists from the local media now tweeting that Chris Iwelumo could be off to Watford tomorrow and Watford forums suggesting he was down in Hertforshire today having a medical, you begin to think there is some truth in the speculation.

Iwelumo seemed to be having a good pre-season with a goal in each of our first two summer friendlies but did his face ever fit at Turf Moor? Certainly his goal tally dried up last season and many Clarets fans became critical and cynical regarding the Scottish international's performances on the pitch.

Eddie Howe is on record saying he wants to reduce the average age of the squad and with Thompson, Alexander and Carlisle (effectively albeit on loan) already off their books could another 30 something be about to follow suit?

The 32 year old former Wolves striker struggled to establish a regular first team place last season under Howe and he is also thought to be on a fairly high salary. I have heard he could have been on as high as 15k/week so if he does go,that should certainly free up some funds to bring one or two more players into the club before the season kicks off on Saturday 6th August..against,yep Watford at home!

We can but wait and see but if we lose a striker, do Clarets fans think we will need to find a replacement up front? Many may think not with Charlie Austin, Martin Paterson, Jay Rodriguez and youngsters like Wes Fletcher and Alex MacDonald all fighting for a place. Tell us what you think below the article.

The power of twitter or is the word 'twits' more relevant here? Will certainly be a bit of egg on a few faces if this never happens now! Don't think Iwelumo's style of play suits our own and he looked too far off the pace at times although it would have helped had he not missed so many sitters! Was willing to give him the benefit of doubt this season but now I might not need to. Burnley v Watford opener? mmmmmmmm

I would be quite happy to keep him - especially with Thommo leaving - while I appreciate the drive for younger players the loss of Carlisle, Grezza and Iwelumo does take a lot of experience from our squad.

I would like to see a few more go before Iwelumo but saying that i think EH wants shut and don't think he going to be starting regular, and if you are right about his wage tmp expensive sub. Disappointing last season and if things don't go to plan this season think he could get some crap of the fans so he can go for me.

If he does go, I tend to agree with CC. Some others are saying we would need a replacement up front. By that I think, someone tall that can score. We do need a target man probably but hopefully one that can hold the ball up and track back! Iwleumo seems more suited to 'hoof ball' and even then seems to miss far too often

Carlisle's comments in the LET are very interesting tonight he's says he expected the gaffer to say ...we all fight for the shirts starting from the new pre season, what he actually said shocked Carlisle, Howe stated as saying to clarky he could leave the club as his didn't fit into Howes plans hes target age range is 24-28 ..... fair play he seems to have some balls does EH won't surprise me one bit if he carries on weeding the garden !!

I think I would be getting worried if I was Duffy ? based on the comments above, I wonder if Howe is positioning he own age, that being younger players wont see him as a young manager where's as older players obviously do

From some accounts Iwelumo as had a medical today and it will be the press tomorrow that he's leaving, hope you are right hollins about tiding the garden up, come on Eddie get your hands dirty.

Yep Fed Up mentioned the medical in the article, although it's all Hornet forum gossip as far as I can make out. However Chris Boden at the BE has tweeted this-'Looks like Chris Iwelumo off to Watford tomorrow, hopefully clearing the way for a new face or two'

Hollins states: "CP no signing in whilst they are on the SW tour". Just to set this straight, I am going to Torquay, despite the lack of anything offered by the home team for me to sit on. I won't be signing anything while I'm there, but I might be tempted into some singing!

Iwelumo's only goal away from home last season..at Watford! Burnley's first home match this season..against Watford in season opener! How ironic! You just know what's going to happen on 6th August if this deal goes through!

So that's Nugent and Iwelumo both likely to score against us, we get Preston in the Cup, Carlisle scores the winner with a bullet header!!! think I need Vins nurse...

Iwelumo on his day can be as good a striker as anybody in the Championship. He has always been prone to having flat spots in his scoring record but then suddenly he gets the bit between his teeth and starts scoring again. I'm a Wolves supporter but have always had a fondness for the Clarets and as well for big Chris. If his past record has anything to do with it - if he starts knocking them in during the preseason then he could well start the season with his tail up in which case I think your club would be wise to see which Chris turns up. Just a neutrals point of view - 15k sounds a lot but it wouldn't be if he helps get you lot off to a flyer! No matter what - I wish you a good and successful season. Would love to see you back at the top table....

I'm a Football Manager-fan, not only because of the game, but of the info you get from the game each time the a new version comes out. Accorting to FM10 Iwelumo has 11k p/w, if it is realistic, is a diff. question.

If it's a done deal, then there's nothing we can do about it, but I hope we keep Big Chris. He offers a different dimension depending on opposition tactics, has scored in the friendlies and as astraltrader says, he could hit the ground running if he's found that form at last.

Kinda on the fence with Iwelumo he can give us options but is he worth 15k a week warming the bench? he can go for me, think we have enough options up front, mid-field looks light or a centre-back, a general is what we need.

The Wolves supporterts I know said we had got a good un in big Chris. To me he has just not hit it off for the Clarets. With what we have, Pato staying, and our hopefully emerging talent, I am not to worried about him going. Having said that he will probably score against us if he goes.

Chris Iwelumo would in my view be more suited to the way Wimbledon used to play. If we are to play the beautiful passing game, Chris needs to be able to fit into that mould. His height gives him tremendous advantage which sometimes for Burnley he has used to good effect. However I find weakness in his close ball control. No doubt an engaging personality in the dressing room but he seems to lack that "never say die" attitude and overall team contribution. If I mention Ray Pointer, I give my age away - but he would fight and forage for the ball all day long.

I take your point,Macfan! I was thinking what we need is someone like Steven Fletcher but shall we say with more consistent accuracy. We have to have strikers who can also run back and hold the ball up whilst at the same time having the option of a tall striker to aim for. Fletcher was good at that. I would like to see such a striker partner Austin or Pato up front in 4-4-2, that would give us the best of both worlds and both could feed off each other [Edited by turfmanphil]

LT today Tue 19th July:'The Lancashire Telegraph understands that no bid has been made for the player, who was linked with a switch to Lancashire rivals Preston North End last week, but if Watford were to come up with the right price the Clarets would listen'
