Rumour Mill-A Southern Move to Burnley?

Rumour Mill-A Southern Move to Burnley?

Burnley, who recently lost out in their attempts to sign former loan midfielder, Jack Cork may now have switched their attention to 30 year old Blackpool midfielder, Keith Southern.

Southern was widely expected to join Leeds United at the end of last season but no deal appears to have materialised.

His contract expired in April so in theory he could have been available on a Bosman but it is understood that Blackpool took out an option on the player in May with the player now contracted until 2012

It was also reported back in early May that Leeds would pay the fee to take him. Obviously they haven't so far and Southern remains at Bloomfield Road.

Southern was close to joining Simon Grayson`s outfit earlier in last season's campaign after growing restless at his lack of action for the Seasiders.

With Blackpool's relegation though and their recent loss of midfielder, Charlie Adam and their failure to sign Jack Cork, Southern may now think his chances of playing for Blackpool have been enhanced.

Gateshead-born, he started his career with Everton and was made captain of their Reserves team but never made his debut for the first team.

Blackpool gaffer at the time, Steve McMahon signed Southern initially on a one-month loan at the start of the 2002-3 season. The loan was extended to three-months and in November 2002 Southern made the move permanent signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Seasiders for an undisclosed fee.Futher contract renewals followed his last one being signed in April 2009 lasting two years.

I suspect this rumour is nothing but that with Southern currently out in Portugal enjoying himself with his team mates on their pre-season tour. He seems to be making positive noises about staying at Blackpool and could also be tempted by the offer of a testimonial. He is now their longest serving player with over 300 games for the Seasiders.

Wonder why Leeds did not follow up? Maybe the media got it totally wrong as they probably have with our interest! Lets see swopping an England Under 21 international with great prospects for a 30 year old who struggled to get into the Pool team? Mind you of course he will be cheap. Perhaps the media have it right??

Nah... I honestly don't think that we'll see Southern in a Burnley-shirt, nice try tho'...
11/07/2011 08:40:00
Tend to agree, Nor! Probably his agent miffed he didn't go to Leeds touting made-up interest around
11/07/2011 08:45:00
Signing 30y old player seems to blow the younger team theory out of the water. Common Eddie and the board let see some action pls.
11/07/2011 09:15:00
That aint gonna happen he's 30 it out of Steady Eddies comfort zone .... anything that cheap and free we will be linked with ....... what a fantastic testament that is to the Board !
11/07/2011 09:52:00
Hollins - could you clarify? Is it the Board as a whole that's ruining your life? Or just Barry Kilby? You seem to go flip-flop on this. Pardon me if I seem grouchy in response. But I'm getting a stiff neck from having to look first one way, then the other. One minute I see the other directors preparing a boardroom coup in response to your concerns about Barry... only for the plotters to be stopped dead in their tracks by the revelation that you don't like any of the rest of them either. Oh well, maybe a rich Russian who likes mountain-biking in the rain will swoop down from the hills to our rescue, unconcerned about the realities of average attendance, size of population, number of other clubs in the area, and lack of an airport within an hour on which to park his jet. Dare to dream.

A Vital Blackpoolite has since confirmed that the club took out a one year option on the guy so have amended the article above. It looks even less likely now that there is any truth in the rumour. It now looks like rumours surrounding Keith Treacy are gathering momentum with Burnley in the driving seat (More like it,if true) [Edited by turfmanphil]

I dont think we think we will see him and I dont want to see him with us next season. He is coming to the end of his career and doesnt seem to have much quality whatsoever. Keith Treacy is different story though.
11/07/2011 10:50:00
Just heard that Preston have agreed a fee for Keith Treacy with an un-named Championship club, most likely being Burnley as we have been the front runners in terms of agreeing a deal. Blackpool and Palace are also rumoured to be interested but if we do get him, I would be very pleased as at 22 years old, he has a lot of potential.

Apparantly we are about to sign someone with the initials MF? Any ideas? There could be some truth in it, since one Burnley board I am aware of keep censoring all mention of it!! lol
