Rumour Mill-The Road from Carlisle to Preston?

Preston North End are poised to sign Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle according to Sky Sports.

Phil Brown is anxious to find a replacement for Sean St Ledger who has now departed Deepdale for Leicester City.

Whether of course our articulate, PFA chairman amd last season's vice-captain would be willing to play in League 1 remains to be seen but I do wish we could have some more positive news in terms of signings rather than speculation we could be depleting our squad even more.

Iwelumo (15k/week allegedly) and Cort! Wow what an exciting squad we have, no need to tweak even!

I got the impression 15k/week was too much for BFC's salary cap now but no idea what it is (low probably) nor who else is on what. Heard the Iwelumo figure from one of the Director's mouths spouting off on the train coming back from Leeds!!

Carlisle was poor last season and at times cost us goals. Andre Bikey is a very solid central defender and Duff is good two. If we sell Carlisle and bring in a new centre back I would be very happy.

Carlisle is OK - but not irreplaceable IMO. Good games - Bad games. Wish him well if he was to leave, although still think he can do a job at championship level.

If I was confident, this club could attract a better centre half bearing in mind no new players at all so far,I would not be too concerned. Our squad though would be 4 down if you count Cork so where are we stronger than we were in our promo season?

This is the way forward, genuine thanks to Clarke for his services but his best year was our promotion year, the Prem exposed his limitations and he has not reproduced his promotion form. So he has to be replaced. I am now waiting for the flurry fairy to come up with a quality replacement.

Players loose form, and then recover that form. If he recovers his promotion year form then he could be invaluable, but if he goes we'll never know. If he goes, who we gonna call ??

He's a good player to have around the place but his form has been in question. I'm starting to get concerned though and a new face in the middle would go a long way towards making me feel better.

Yes this is the only way forward by getting rid of these expensive average players on big contracts and big wages. Hang on a minute this is poor little Burnley punching above there weight and 8claret8 summed it up for me.

To be honest I think Eddie Howe has left behind some hints as to who he wants and who he doesn't. He didnt start Grezza once last season and he went. Steven Thompson barely played a minute of football and he went. He didnt show any interest in bringing Kevin McDonald back from loan and he went. And unfortunately, Eddie never seemed to be as passionate in resigning Jack Cork as we all were because if he really wanted him, he could definitely have got him. Maybe he see's a McCann : Bartley partnership as better catalyst for success. Basically, the fact that Carlisle didnt start a game since the Bristol City game signals that there is a good chance he is not in Eddie's plans. I think a Bikey : Edgar partnership would be very strong with Duff as a good backup. And that is probably what the manager is thinking too.

Tend to agree Adam although we have been linked with a number of back four players, most notably Shackell but we lost out on him

i say give PNE Cort instead Clarke lol. To me it would be wrong for Carlisle to go & keep Cort!

The 'link' with Shackell never got beyond newspaper drossip. (Do you like my new word?) So, I'm not sure why it's being recycled now. Adam - that's a very astute analysis. Edgar played an excellent game against Cardiff, and was highly rated by promoted Swans. Easton can also cover in the centre. Anyway, thanks to Clarke foir all the memories, but I reckon he was always on the way out, like Adam says, and I don't feel any negative emotions about him going other than the sense of loss that always happens when someone who's been big in your life moves on. Interesting that PNE have come in for Clarke rather than Cort. Cort had a bad time coming in to a dispirted PL team, but perhaps his best days are yet to come, whethere with us or someone else? More likely, PNE want the better leader of the two, who's also a home boy, and who's possibly on less money.
