'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Rumour Mill-Smith and O'Dea Interest Wide of Mark.

Spurs 20 year old full-back, Adam Smith (pictured above on right) and 24 year old Celtic central defender, Darren O'Dea are just two players that have recently been linked with a move to Burnley.

In the case of O'Dea it was even reported in the national press over the weekend that the Clarets had already made a 400,000 offer for the Republic of Ireland international.

However the Lancashire Telegraph now claims 'to understand' that Burnley's interest for both players could be wide of the mark.

It is not the first time the club have been linked with O'Dea. Owen Coyle was also reported to be interested in signing the defender during the January transfer window of our promotion season but instead opted to bring in Rhys Williams on loan from Middlesbrough.

However the LT have now poured cold water on the speculation this time round and indeed make the sweeping statement that 'despite having an interest in a number of players, the Clarets have not yet made an official bid for any of their targets' which is even more amazing since we now have just three days left before the squad report to Gawthorpe for pre-season training this Thursday!

Adam Smith ,who played for Howe whilst on loan at Bournemouth last season, has just been offered a new contract at Spurs. Despite this however a number of Championship clubs including Burnley, Ipswich and Reading are reported to be interested in signing the full-back.

Not so Burnley if Suzanne Geldard's comments in her LT article are true. She writes:

'I understand the Clarets have not made any attempt to sign the 20-year-old at this stage'

So here we are, pre-season training about to start and the summer friendlies scheduled for next month and we have not even made any bids for new players? Can that really be right?

What will our new squad look like when the new season gets underway with a home game against Watford on Saturday August 6th? Are Clarets fans expecting a large number of new faces to have been signed by then or do they think one or two will be sufficient?

Well whatever they are expecting, Eddie Howe has given a massive clue to his intentions after stating this week:

"There is certainly no massive rebuilding job that needs doing,

"I can assure everyone that we are working hard to get things done, but you can`t rush these things and I am sure we will have the squad in place that we want by kick-off."

Well let's bloody well hope so!

Does that mean we did not even make bids for Shackell or Treacy? Summat doesn't add up
turfmanphil
Maybe they are waiting to see if McCann and Cork sign up before chasing other targets. Also a lot of contracts don't expire until the end of the month. We will have to wait and see.

Shackell though is a defender so that would not really have been relevant to the midfield situation unless money really is tight! Same goes for full-back,Smith. We lost Shackell anyway to Derby, who are obviously a much more attractive club (cough!).
turfmanphil
Or maybe we need to shift some of the current squad in order to bring new faces in, as EH say its not a major rebuilding job, only time will tell.
Fedupclaret
We will be in a right mess if we are not too careful and the more you look at the salary cap/turnover proposal for 2013 the more you see how critical it will be to get promotion in the next two years. We have to push the boat out now and go for it but I bet we don't under the current regime
turfmanphil
Never could see why we'd have bid for Treacy. Phil Brown just seems to be hyping him up in what starts to look like a desperate and failing attempt to salvage PNE finances. Wasn't at all sure about Shackell either. Sounded decent. But is he really that much better than what we've got? Was Edgar's display against Cardiff a one-off? Will Bikey's head be in the right place now there are new changing rooms at Gawthorpe? All the newspaper stories are just agent leaks in my opinion; desperate attempts by them to try to heat up a deflationary market. And I'm not personally going to risk getting a heart attack over us not signing players we didn't want. But to each their own. ;-) Concerning those players we do want, presumably it would be good management to get them at lower prices by being patient? And look on the bright side. Pato's back. Austin's presumably fit. No-one else has put in bids for McCann or anyone else, have they? If Chris does sign, that's effectively 3 new players. Throw in a new manager, and why exactly is it that people think we've got no chance? Football fans as a whole are rather like addicted shopaholics these days. Kick the habit! Be brave! Be proud! Up the Clarets!

Feeling more and more like a mushroom. Kept in the dark, except occasionally someone opens the door and gives me a load of s**t.

No chance of that phil regarding the boat being pushed out, just makes me wonder are the board happy that we have been in the prem and got the been there done it attitude.
Fedupclaret
Couch do you really think the squad we have is good enough to get promotion because i don't.
Fedupclaret
Same squad as last year, without BL holding it back for half a season, and with Eddie being more effective than he could ever be when coming in half way with a psychologically out-of-kilter group of players. Adding Pato and Austin more than offsets loss of Thommo. If Edgar can play like he did last game, that would be like having a new player. McCann, like new if he signs, offsets Cork, if he doesn't. In fact, I reckon McCann would score more goals than Cork. Some players getting a bit older (Carlisle, Elliott, Grezza, etc). Some younger ones improving (Easton, Jay Rod, etc). I think that on balance the squad would certainly be competitive and could well improve on 8th, especially if Eddie can solve the issues of psychology and on-field leadership. Improved facilities may well sort out the little group of grumblies who some say were taking the edge off our performances. Would I be feeling any more or less optimistic if we'd signed Treacy and Shackell? They don't seem to have 'make a huge difference' quality. Useful, especially Shackell, if we lost other players on higher wages. But no more than that. Indeed, by making a bigger squad without the new players being markedly better than the old ones could have exactly the wrong impact of squad psychology.

Think maybe we should put the title any Clarets signings seem wide of the mark??

CP - the debate around our central defenders seems to have moved onto the backburner. During the latter stages of our last campaign there was a definite feeling that Carlisle was way past his best and no-one else was really covering themselves in glory. Therefore at least one decent Centre back (e.g. Darren O'Dea) looked a priority. I would love CC to prove he can still compete and it looks like he will get the chance to do so - thoughts?
Essex Claret
As long as we sign at least one of Cork and McCann, I'd agree that the centreback slots look to be those most in need of critical scrutiny, and certainly so if we take the most commonly heard groan last year as being 'another cheap goal conceded'. But Edgar played a blinder against Cardiff. Easton moved in there and showed he's no slouch away from his preferred LB slot. Bikey was back in favour for the last few games and playing well. There's been speculation somewhere that he'd dropped out of favour because he was doing things like being late for training. I'd guess the club hope is that that won't be so likely if the players don't have to shower and change on the Turf, but can do all that at Gawthorpe. Then again, given that I'd be the first to admit that I don't know what I'm talking about, wouldn't it just prove all fans right who wanted rid of Brian Laws, if Eddie worked with Cort in pre-season and we ended up starting with him and Edgar at the back!!! Just to clarify, I do want us to sign both McCann and Cork. But if we do, does that mean Marney on the bench? Or Cork and McCann both playing centreback... something they both can do? What's your starting XI plus subs at this point?
Couch Potato
Cornwall your bang on ................. Its like the blind leading the blind! However what I will say is this.... in fairness the two most important signings to the team are McCann and Cork not anyone else, it could be argued therefore that we need to understand where we are with theses guys, it would be a bit short sighted to spend 3M quid on a couple of new midfielder then either /or Jack and Chris sign...... keeping our powder dry is not band thing BUT MY POINT IS THIS........... WHY HAVE WE NOT FILLED IN THE GAPS IN DEFENCE AND ATTACK or are we holding out for mega bucks on McCann in order to fund or boost other areas ? If nothing else we need to start being more positive in apperance... from the board down quite honesty I think the PR and marketing boys are on Pre Season as well ! we need clearer lines of communication or frustration will build .... you can see this growing in this link alone I CAN SEE THE GROUND SHIFTING .. none of us really want that so comon Burnley Turfmans right get ya bloody fingers out
hollinsclaret
It's nothing to do with Derby being a "more attractive club" - what if they are happy to pay silly money?! Contracts don't end until the end of this month, so I think that it would be rather previous to push the panic button so soon. To be honest, I can't cope with negativity at the best of times, so to see people managing it BEFORE a season has even starts frustrates me immensely.
whentheballmoves
smith is ok, he is good attacking full back but when Bmouth conceded goals even the rubbish pundits could work out that it was Smith was the weak link!
H00P3R
Well safe to say there will be no new recruits for the start of tomorrows pre season training ! I wonder Howe confident Eddie is on Chris and Jack now ? ...... not good really not good at all, cant help but think McCann is holding the whole think up but if he is it will be exactly where his agent wants things to be !
hollinsclaret
adam smith is a good player i hope he come bak to us though but charlton look like the favs
