Austin-Healey in Timey for Pre-Season!

Austin-Healey in Timey for Pre-Season!

Clarets fans have not really had chance to gauge how good striker Charlie Austin could be for the club in a Clarets shirt.

Eddie Howe signed the former Swindon forward for a reported £1.2 million in the January window this winter on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

He made his debut for the Clarets in the 1-0 away defeat against Doncaster Rovers back in February and followed that up with three more appearances that month including the next game at home to Norwich City; a 2-1 victory for the Clarets.

The 21 year old also featured in two games where he came on from the bench in the second half away to Cardiff (1-1) and Preston(2-1 win)

Austin though was not able to score in any of those games back in February and seemed to struggle to make an impression.

Disaster then struck when he broke down in training suffering a recurrence of a dislocated shoulder that he had whilst on Swindon's books. The injury would require surgery which effectively meant he would miss the rest of the season.

Austin though according to media reports is now on course to return for the Clarets' pre-season.

Eddie Howe also believes both Austin and Martin Paterson can provide Burnley`s umph up front during the 2011/12 campaign. Pato has also just recovered from a long injury after suffering from a persistent thigh problem; an injury that kept him sidelined for most of last season.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Howe said:

"We`ve got high hopes for Charlie after seeing how well he did at Swindon.

"He`s at a good age and we always signed Charlie not just for this season but for next season as well.

"It`s tough when you go to a new club to get injured just after you arrive, because you want to go and impress but you can`t due to injury.

"But it can happen. It happened to me at Portsmouth. I had been very keen to go there and do well from day one.

"Hopefully he will suffer no effects from the injury now, though, and he will come back and make a strong push for a place.

"Both Charlie and Pato will be like new signings for us and it`s very important for them to have good pre-seasons, and then they can come back and give us a lot of competition up front."

Clarets fans will certainly be hoping Austin can settle into Championship life and start to get some goals under his belt. He is certainly capable of doing that albeit at a lower level to date. He scored 37 goals in 65 games during an 18-month spell in League One with Swindon.

Really hope Austin fits in well. I would love to see a Pato-Austin partnership working well with Jay Rod also on the scene.

I would have Jay on the team sheet every week and let the others fight for a shirt. Jay has improved month on month and we must develop that by playing him every week.

You make a good point there VR but I bet we see him playing more out wide again next season. Will we keep Iwelumo that's my big question? Can we really afford to keep him on the wage bill for very little return to date?
