Turf Titbits

Turf Titbits

Here is our usual weekly round-up of little snippets of Clarets news that you may have missed.

McCann Update

Clarets manager Eddie Howe has been talking about Chris McCann`s progress. The midfielder had a head operation recently to drain excess fluid after complaining of repeated migraines and had also been sidelined all season following reconstructive knee surgery in the summer.

Howe said:

"He`s in light training doing ball work with the physio still, but he`s stepping up his rehab all the time,

"He`s making good progress and it`s good to see him out on grass, it`s a really positive sign."

Beadle Bum as Bury Beat Burnley in Reserves Game

Watch out there was a Beadle about playing for Burnley`s second string against Bury Reserves in midweek. The game played at Radcliffe Borough's ground, Stainton Park on Wednesday night featured a Burnley trialist, 21 year old midfielder, Louis-Rae Beadle.

Beadle has been plying his trade for Hampton & Richmond in the Blue Square South League and has been training with the Burnley squad hoping to follow a similar career path into the Football League as our recent signing Marvin Bartley.

It was sadly not a good night for our second string though with the Reserves still looking for their first win of 2011 after losing a seven goal thriller by the odd goal despite being 2-0 up at one stage. Burnley went in front in the fifth minute thanks to an own goal following a corner from our new trialist.

We then doubled our advantage after 30 minutes following some crafty work from Michael King down the left flank. Joe Jackson got on the end of the ball delivered into the box to make it 2-0 Clarets.

Our keeper, Josh Cook though did not have a good game and two minutes after our second goal spilled the ball giving Liam Boswell an easy tap-in to make it 2-1. The Clarets though were soon back on top when a cut back from Alex-Ray Harvey found Dominic Knowles ideally placed to slot home and restore our two goal advantage.

Bury though in the second half exploited our goalkeeping weakness after just five minutes from the restart. Cook should have done better but let a Luke McCarthy shot go through him to make the score 3-2.

In the 68th minute Bury were level following a well-taken shot from the lively winger, McCarthy and they would then make it a miserable night for our keeper after a shot by Adam Dawson slipped through his fingers into the back of the net to give Bury a 4-3 victory.

This was only our second loss of the season but at least the defeat against the bottom club still means we remain top of the totesport.com League West Division table. We are three points clear of Preston`s second string on 27 points from 13 games but the Lilywhites do have a two game advantage over the Clarets. We need to get back to winning ways and get our first win of 2011 on the board after now two defeats and one draw so far this year.

Burnley X-Files: Blake Turns Down Norwich

Robbie Blake has not exactly set the footballing world alight for Bolton since leaving Turf Moor for the Reebok last summer. He has struggled to get a regular place in Owen Coyle`s starting eleven and has more often than not had to be content with a place on the bench.

Blake was linked with a loan move back to the Championship this week but Bolton rejected a request from Norwich. It would appear Blake is ready to fight for his place in the Bolton team rather than drop down a division.

"The manager said he is happy with me, he knows I`ve been a bit frustrated but he thinks I`ve a big part to play, which is a positive," said Blake.

"Until the last couple of weeks I`ve been in every squad.

"I want to be playing in the Premier League, but the lads are doing really well so there`s not much I can do apart from be patient and hopefully get my chance."

Burnley have their own striker crisis at the moment with the latest injury to Charlie Austin adding to our problems. Austin dislocated his shoulder in training on Monday night and will be out for the rest of the season. That now means we have four strikers currently unavailable due to injury. Thompson underwent surgery last week to fix a persistent infected groin problem and could be sidelined for the rest of the season. Martin Paterson is also out for the rest of the season with a thigh problem and even young Wes Fletcher is struggling with an ankle injury. Eddie Howe has made it plain he is looking to bring in an emergency loan striker and it was inevitable that Robbie Blake was rumoured to be an option. It is understood though that Blake is not on Howe`s radar and even if he was it sounds like Robbie would be unwilling to return to the club for a third time. I believe in any case it is time to move on and find a regular goal-scorer if at all possible. Kevin Phillips seems to be a name mentioned the most in the rumour mill but we shall have to see.

Burnley X-Files: Dean West Back in Lincoln

Former Burnley full-back Dean West has returned to Lincolnshire joining non-league Lincoln Moorlands Railway after leaving Corby Town. West, now 38 made more than 100 appearances for Lincoln City in two spells at Sincil Bank. He started his career with the club in 1991 and in September 1995, Stan Ternent then Bury manager signed him in exchange for Kevin Hulme. Ternent of course then became Burnley manager at the end of the 1997-98 season and in 1999, West came to Turf Moor on a Bosman free-transfer thus reuniting with his former gaffer at Gigg Lane.

Dean West left Turf Moor in 2004 rejoining his former club, Lincoln City. He then joined Boston United before being released at the end of the 2004-5 season. A spell at King`s Lynn followed before he joined Corby Town in July 2008.

Yes he needs to concentrate on getting fit instead of baking cup cakes for the ticket office staff when its there birthday!!!Apparently he makes a good cupcake!!, my son saw him in ticket office/club shop on Saturday morning and over heard the conversation!!!. On a serious note I wish him well and hope there is nothing to worry about

Rushing Mccann is the last thing we need to do - If we have to wait until next season and get a FULLY fit Mccann back - so be it.

I accept that fully Dale, I do think the club though could be better at the PR on this one rather than keep raising expectations. All they need to say is McCann will probably not be fit until next season and then if he does recover in time so much the better!

Hmmm you maybe right - To be honest, I cant fully remember what the club said exactly. In my mind - I had written Chris off until the start of next season already.

McCann back to previous form would be like quality new signing - even if it IS for next season. Fingers crossed for him!
