Accrington Stanley 2-3 Burnley

Accrington Stanley 2-3 Burnley

A thrilling second half comeback saw Burnley overcome neighbours Accrington Stanley at the newly named Fraser Eagles Stadium this afternoon.

The hosts, who were playing their first game since their promotion to the football league took the game to the Clarets, racing into a two goal lead at the interval.

No fewer than ten different players ran out for the second period, and the Clarets, aided by a midfield masterclass performance from Alan Mahon, dramatically turned the game on its head to take the game 3-2.

Another positive sign for the Clarets was goals from new strikers Andy Gray and Steve Jones levelled the scores just 12 minutes after the restart.

It was Gray and Mahon's first appearances for Steve Cotterill's side since their initial loan moves were made permanent on July 1.

Fellow new signings Steve's Foster and Jones made their Clarets bows in the second half as Burnley turned things around, after a disastrous start to their first pre-season game.

Winger Gary Roberts broke down the left and with the Burnley defence struggling, his slide rule pass into the box left Mangan with only Brian Jensen to beat from 12 yards, and he did so with aplomb to give the home side the lead.

The lead was doubled when Roberts dashed past three challengers, before being halted by John McGreal, with the ball falling kindly from Brown who slotted home.

Gray reduced the deficit, after a sublime Mahon Free kick was brilliant stopped by the Stanley keeper, the ball falling kindly for the Scottish strikr to nod home.

The Clarets were level soon after, when Mahon produced a defence splitting pass for Jones to run onto, and his powerful shot left the keeper helpless.

The impressive Mahon completed the comeback, with a stunning 35 yard free kick, a goal worthy of winning any game.

The Burnley wagon is up and running, and fans will be hoping for things to continue as the pre-season work hots up.

I wouldnt get too excited,Wallis! The first half team contained a 16 year old midfielder and three transfer listed players. As pointed out, 10 of the players were changed around at half-time. The second-half team looked far more like our first-team choice and the improved performance and comeback confirms this!
