Last week we heard the good news that Rodriguez had been called up to the England Under 21 international squad for the first time after impressing Stuart Pearce. After scoring the winning goal on Saturday at home to Norwich in our 2-1 victory, the 21-year-old joined up with the squad for their friendly in Italy on Tuesday at the Stadio Carlo Castellani in Empoli and it then got even better for the promising striker. Wearing the Number 17 shirt he won his first international cap after coming on from the bench on the hour mark to replace James Vaughan. Sadly though Italy won the friendly 1-0 but still it was all good experience for the local lad. By all accounts he played well making some deft touches although did not quite get any opportunities to score.
If that was not enough, news then broke that contract negotiations were also well under way with Eddie Howe desperate to sort out a new deal with Rodriguez making it his top priority.
Rodriguez current contract expires in the summer so the pressure is on to sort out a new deal. Talks were well advanced under former manager, Brian Laws but this clearly stalled following Laws departure and whilst a new manager could be sorted out.
New manager Eddie Howe though has made his intentions clear:
"It`s something we picked up on as soon as we got here," said the Clarets gaffer
"As soon as we were made aware that he was out of contract at the end of the season it became number one on our priority list.
"We`re very keen for Jay to stay, and I think I speak on behalf of everyone at the club in saying that.
"We`ve been very impressed by him since we came in and we`re sure he has got a really good future in the game.
"Hopefully we can come to an agreement sooner rather than later.
"I think it`s quite close, so hopefully we can get it done.
'Negotiations have been underway for some time, so hopefully we will have some news soon."
Yes, some week for Jay Rod and things can only get better, hopefully with the Clarets!
