Burnley Cherry Pick Bartley

The Clarets made a late move for Bournemouth 24 year old midfielder, Marvin Bartley last night on the last day of the January transfer window and after the first bid was rejected Cherries chairman, Eddie Mitchell 'reluctantly agreed' an improved offer from former Bournemouth gaffer. Eddie Howe.

The deal left a bad taste in the mouth at Dean Court.

The Bournemouth chairman was furious also heavily criticising Bartley and his representatives for their handling of the move. Eddie Howe also came in for some stick over the timing off the offer especially since their former gaffer would clearly known what effect Bartley`s departure would have had on Bournemouth`s promotion chances.

Mitchell explained the bidding process:

"Burnley made their first offer between 5.30 and 5.45. What a time to come in. That bid was rejected, as was an improved one. They came back with another one and then changed their minds and reduced it. We negotiated somewhere between the two."

The initial offer was reported to be in the region of 300,000

The Clarets improved offer came just after 9pm and it is also understood we were in competition with Cardiff City to sign the player. The Bluebirds were also reported to have made a bid. The final transfer fee appears destined to remain 'undisclosed`

The deal was subject to the relevant paperwork meeting last night`s 11pm transfer deadline and has yet there has been no official confirmation from either club.

The Clarets then have made just two signings during the transfer window, Bartley follows the signing of Charlie Austin last week.

Thought this was dead in the water after listening to Sky Sports until 11pm last night but heh ho we have to trust Howe's judgement here. Know little about this lad!

You missed out the three agents contacting the AFC Bournemouth chairman on behalf of Bartley and Bartley stating that he would struggle to play for the club again.

Good work Barry Kilby and Eddie Howe getting another young and upcoming players and for keeping hold of Eagles. Think we can see the pattern of Eddie Howe view on which way he's taking the re-building of the team.

I'm not sure how serious our (Cardiff's) interest was to be honest, but if you've scuppered us again - I hope it works out as well as last time...... How is Remco van de Schaaf these days?!?!

OK according to the Bournemouth Daily echo, we did have a bid accepted and Bartley signed. However, Bournemouth faxed their paperwork on time. Due to a hitch we were 8 minutes late, so everybodys waiting to see if the deal will be sanctioned. Its not stated if it was a technical hitch or what, I think the FL do give a bit of leeway for technical hitch's. There've been comments in the last week that there will be no grace period for late paperwork this year. Maybe we can get Bartley in on loan with a linked agreement to sign him in the next window? But has this broken the goodwill that to date has existed between fans of Bfc and AFCB? Brilliant comment from VitalCardiffAdmin! But maybe the question about Remco should have been 'where' rather than 'how'? Last I heard was when we were making jokes about him having been found in the 1960s underpitch heating system that was excavated when we relaid the pitch this summer.

Bfc official site also saying it's a done deal. It's my understanding he's quick, in that the Bfc site says he was a schoolboy sprinter. Can he tackle?

Feel sorry for Bournemouth, we have stolen their best player just as they are pushing for promotion. But that's football its not Cricket. But pleased we have added to the squad, Time will tell if he can cut it at this level.

Hi Grimsby. I don't know anything about this player. Is he really the best in Bournemouth's squad? What's he like?

Grimsby-why do you think he is their best player. Reading their fans comments in Bournemouth Echo yesterday his speed seems to be the only thing he has going for him with most fans saying he will warm EH's bench at best and not good enough for this level. May be sour grapes of course but many were not overly concerned to see him go

Does anyone know whether he's a tackling holder, which is what we need, or the next Guerrero, who was also quick, but went rapidly back to South America? Is he left-footed or right-footed?

I'd say tackler CP as he played at Centre Half for a while for Bournemouth and they actually listed him as a defender.

Good to see him described today on the official Bfc site as 'tough-tackling' and 'something nasty that we need to add' to the midfield. I agree with this assessment of Howe's.

Don't want to disappoint you CP but I was also a schoolboy sprinter but that electric pace had disappeared, strangely, by the time I was 24 !!

Would have liked to have seen us wrap up Jack Cork as well. It would be a great shame if he signed for another club in the summer.

He isn't our best player, Howe just had player bias. He is good at breaking up play but not very good on the ball. He has scored only 1 Goal in his entire career at bournemouth. And what the article missed out was that our chairman wasnt as mad at EH as he was at the Burnley Board. As it happens, they had already secretly agreed personal terms with Bartley days before they put in a bid and about 4 people all claiming to be Bartleys agent were touting him around via text. The FA has now gotten involved with allegations of "tapping up" having been made against Burnley, similar to the Chelsea issue with kakuta, so i doubt this will be the last we hear of this. I am very very relieved though, i thought EH was going to go for our entire midfield, but as it happens he took the one player that we can cope without the most, so there is a bright side

Oh, and about the player: He is a right footed holding midfielder, with licence to get forward. He is great at tackling and breaking up play. Also, he has massive pace and was probobly the quickest player on the AFCB team, but being a DCM, he only really uses it to mop up loose balls and intercept through balls. He has scored 1 goal in his time at bournemouth, which i think is his first professional club. His combative style does attract yellow cards, lots of yellow cards but mostly unjust if you ask me. Refs started keeping tabs on him deliberately. If he picks up an early yellow then he will either be subbed on 60 mins or he WILL get a red card. His other great attribute is his versitility. For bournemouth he has filled in at all of the back four, in the year we won promotion. He is a great player, but I think that he maybe isnt quite ready for this level. He has only really had regular starting first team football this season, so after only 6 months of league 1, im not sure he will go straight into a championship starting 11. The quicker pace of the championship may bring more frequent fouls and cards too. Great player, but still a Bellend for the way he left and the lack of respect he gave the club.
