'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Jimmy McIlroy MBE-Tribute from Peter Pike

Clarets legend of the 60s and 70s generally recognised as our best ever player.Jimmy McIlroy has been awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List for services to football and charity.

Peter Pike, former Burnley MP and Chairman of Clarets Trust had this to say about the great news:

'The Clarets Trust is delighted that Jimmy McIlroy has been awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List. Jimmy is an Honorary Life Member of the Trust and has supported us on several occasions.

'This award recognizes his great contribution to football both locally and as a Northern Ireland International (truly one of the greatest Clarets Legends ever to wear the Claret and Blue Shirt), but also his great contributions to charities locally. He has always been very much a modest man and a person always so much in demand by people locally.

'This award comes following a testimonial year and his local recognition by being made a Freeman of the Borough of Burnley.

'As MP for Burnley I put forward his name on more than one occasion for such an award and it is great to see him at last get this recognition which he so richly deserves. It was a delight to watch him as a player in the 50's and 60's and it has always been a great pleasure to have met him - and worked with him - on so many occasions in later years.

Congratulations Jimmy on this award so very much deserved.

Peter Pike

I am sure all Vital Burnley users will congratulate Jimmy on this fantastic achievement.

Ray Pointer was my my first Claret hero, but closely followed by Jimmy Mac once my 7 year old brain started noticing his truly amazing skills. Yes, Congratulations JM , a well deserved award.

Although an infrequent contributor to these pages, a coincidental user name compels me to come clean. I met Mr McIlroy for the first time last year, a day I shall never forget. Occasionally as a boy I might have thrown a stray football to him, for I sat on the wooden benches at the front of the Enclosure, and balls going out of play often came in my direction. I can certainly endorse the sentiments of all Burnley supporters of that era, he was a wonderful player and it pleases me greatly to be able to add my congratulations on this overdue honour.
