Burnley Now 12th, Five Points off the Play-Offs!

Widespread snow and ice disrupted the Championship fixtures on Saturday with our own match away to Cardiff City being postponed for safety reasons.

Some games though did go ahead with the result that Burnley slipped three places in the League to 12th spot on 29 points from 20 games.

Although we have up to two games advantage over a number of our rivals fighting for promotion we are now five points adrift of the sixth placed club, Coventry.

It is diffcult to predict what the effect of the postponements will have on the team psychologically but midtable just before Christmas is not the ideal place to be especially when your two postponed games in hand are both away (Portsmouth and now Cardiff)

I suppose Leeds United did us a favour on Saturday beating league leaders QPR 2-0 at Elland Road to go second.

At least it keeps us in contention for automatic promotion but we have a mountain to climb to achieve that despite the 1-2 game advantage over our rivals for promotion.

QPR have 41 points from 21 games, 12 points clear of the Clarets (or 9 if we win our game in hand over them)

Leeds are on 38 points from 22 games, nine more than Burnley. That could be reduced to 3 points if we win our two games in hand.

It is all 'ifs and buts' though now at this stage and most Clarets fans will feel we should be doing much better at this stage.

Far too many clubs are competing for a play-offs place now and with Burnley not really standing out or being able to put a run together it now looks like a lottery whether we can finish in the top six.

Of the other teams in the top six, Swansea lost away 1-0 to Sheffield United and are now in 4th spot on the same number of points (37) as third-place Welsh rivals,Cardiff having now played a game more.

Norwich City also won their six pointer away to Coventry City beating the Sky Blues 2-1 to leapfrog them and go one place above them into 5th on 36 points.

We have a crucial period coming up now, weather-permitting, and the games over the festive period will be crucial to making or breaking our season. Not usually a good time for the Clarets we have to avoid any slump this time round or it will be curtains, probably most likely for Brian Laws too.

Barry Kilby has already intimated anything less than reaching the play-offs will be seen as failure. We have to quite simply release the purse strings in the January window and show we mean business by freshening up the squad. The club have promised as much so let's now bring in some high-profile players and go for it!

We have to start winning away, avoid stupid home defeats like Leeds and get some back to back wins together. Tall ask when have yet to win away in the league this season and under Laws have not yet won two games on the trot!!

Just before the sorry end at the WACA, SKY showed a big banner proudly proclaiming Burnley FC to the world watching England's cricketers going through a rough patch. The way the table is poised, all we need to do is put together that elusive run of form and we'll be making our own splash. There is everything still to play for.

The big question is how long does Kilby give Laws, if you believe some of the rumours how can you give Laws money to spend in January if he going to get the push two months down the line. The next question is what if we lose three or four players in January which may be good business for the Club but the fans would not see it that way. We all know our Club is under achieving for what ever reason the Barnsley game could be a turning point of the season.

The manager has to go I am sick of hearing his same excuses and if he even thinks of blaming the weather disruptions after we get beat by Barnsley next week that will just confirm to me how much of a fake he is. He should stand proud be a man and say I am not up to the job - 12th at half way stage is ridiculous with the quality of players BFC have he is just not getting the best out of them was never convinced last season when appointed and even less convinced now

Everything is still possible including automatic spots. But it's a simple equation now and it means we've got to start winning. Winning at home and away, and back to back so that we climb back up to the higher play off positions. We've got the players but I don't know why they can't consistently produce the goods for the whole of 90 minutes never mind back to back. Eagles and Pato must be close to returning now, and McCann in February ? Guidetti holds some promise as well and I think he could make an impact if given more time on the pitch. Anyway, whoever Laws chooses have got to produce the goods otherwise there will be no escape from the 'last chance saloon' which is where we are now in 12th position. UTC.

Like I say when we get beat on boxing day he will be sacked and then we can get a manager in place that knows what he is doing. It sounds like I am being negative and I am normally an optimistic person but the time really has come for him to go we are not consistent, incorrect formations, he is not getting the best out of the team, he has a ***** haircut and he is full of excuses.

If you're right brian then comes the next problem have we got the confidence the board will get the right man this time round in stead of going for the cheap option.

The bottom line for me is that who ever is in charge, we need to put together a run of back to back wins and an unbeaten run of about 8 games to put us into the top 3. It is possible with the players we have.....BUT will it happen? If it doesn't and dare I say it we end up at the end of the season 7th or worse then this will have been one spectacular failure by the Board, the manager, the coaching staff and the Players imo. Roll on Dec 31st...when I think I should come off the fence....just Barnsley and Scunny left this year???

QPR and Cardiff are slipping at the moment whereas the likes of Leeds and Norwich are now producing runs which are taking them up there. The good news for us is that Cardiff and QPR haven't gone out of sight because of this, but it's pretty obvious to all of us that the time has come for our run to start. As tmp says, we've been saying this for a while now and it sure as hell hasn't happened. For me, it's got to be 4 4 2 from now on, even away, and Iwelumo needs to park his a**e on the bench for a while with Thomo, Pato, J Rod and Guidetti being given a chance up front in whatever combination to see if we can start the goal scoring spree big time. Big Chris has got a part to play but he ain't doing it at the moment, so rest him and get him hungry again. Getting beat on Boxing Day isn't an option brian, we've got to put them away otherwise your namesake is in big trouble. Personally, I hope for his sake and ours that he gets it right, but that doesn't mean that he will !
