Rumour Mill-Austin to Fortune at Turf Moor?

A host of clubs according to Sky Sports are preparing moves for 21 year old Swindon hot-shot striker, Charlie Austin in the January transfer window. One of the clubs mentioned is Burnley along with Millwall, Portsmouth, QPR and Southampton.

Swindon boss,Danny Wilson though will be trying everything he can to keep hold of the impressive striker. Swindon have already opened up talks with Austin trying to negotiate a new deal and ward off interest from other clubs. This is despite only recently signing a new two-year deal last February

Austin scored 20 goals in 31 games for Swindon last season and played a major part in their promotion campaign from League One. Sadly Swindon lost at Wembley to Millwall in the League One Play-Offs final.

This season he has struggled with injury but has still managed to score 10 goals in all competitions

The forward started with Reading as a youth player in 1999 but was released for being too small!

Swindon was his first professional club having played previously for Thatcham Town, Kintbury Rangers and his hometown side of Hungerford Town. He later moved with his family to Bournemouth and joined nearby semi-professional Wessex League Premier Division team Poole Town.

Austin was offered a trial at Swindon Town and signed in October 2009 for an undisclosed fee being given a contract until the end of the season.

The Clarets were first linked with Austin in the summer this year with both Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough reported to be competing for his signature. Back then a figure of £1 million was being banded about but his value could have increased since then

If the current rumours are true Burnley could have their work cut out trying to secure his services with the likes of automatic promotion hopefuls and second-placed club QPR sniffing around but this would certanly be an exciting high-profile signing for Clarets fans to savour.

In my opinion Austin would be an exciting signing and we need some high-profile players coming on board in the January window. We must surely now have enough money to improve our promotion chances without making up excuses this time?

Crikey TMP, we have a hard enough time trying to decide who plays up front now! Do we need another striker, especially one who was playing for Poole Town 2 or 3 years ago in the no-one's ever heard of it league, and has never played about the third tier? Do you think he's better than Big Chris, Pato, JayRod or Thommo? I would suggest that's unproven. If we're going to spend, I'd rather we were looking at central midfield and central defence, and in a way that was less of a gamble.

Think this lad deserves a shot at the Championship. If he's good enough for QPR, he's good enough for Burnley. Warnock certainly knows a thing or two about strikers!

I bet he would have done his stuff at Coventry. This club needs some promising players, we need to demonstrate we can attract players to this club who have the potential to take us forward. Hopefully the Gawthorpe plans now ratified by the Council will get the Sec of State approval and we can shine up the magnet!
