A Three Year Grant in Claret!

27 year old keeper Lee Grant as expected has become a Claret today after signing from Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee which is widely believed to be about £1 million with add-ons.

He has penned a three year deal following discussions and a medical at Turf Moor this week.

Quite clearly, Wednesday manager Alan Irvine is not a happy bunny about the fee agreed but is resigned to the situation in the light of the Owls financial plight.

He told BBC Radio Sheffield:

'Personally, no, no I'm not (happy with the fee).

'But I understand the circumstances, I don't think it was enough but I fully understand exactly what the situation is and so it's one of those situations where I can't argue with the decision that's been made by any means.

'But we move on, the money is obviously important for the future of the club and that's the most important thing.

'The fact that people are able to strike at a time when it may have been difficult for us to have reject offers, that's probably their good luck.'

Grant was rated about £2-3 million last season when Birmingham were showing some interest so we appear to have got ourselves a bargain.

Late attempts by both Bristol City and West Brom to poach the keeper from under our noses have also clearly failed. Sky Sports reported earlier today that Bristol City manager, Steve Coppell had made a late move for Grant but had been snubbed by the Owls board.

Welcome aboard,Lee!

Chuffed to bits about this signing! :-)

Sad loss for us - a top goalkeeper and brilliant shot-stopper. Got a bit of a reputation for being dodgy at set-pieces though, doesn't command his area too well. Good luck, Lee.

Canny piece of business. I hope Lee now fulfills all his promise and keeps his thus far 100% clean sheet Claret record going for many a day! I also wish Wednesday all the best. There was something not at all right about them going down last season, after striving to manage their finances properly, while Palace stayed up, and failed to pay their debts for - what was it? - the third time.

Our loss is your gain, its a very sad day for Owls fans, prob the best goalkeeper outside of the Premiership. Hope he has a successful career with you guys I wish him all the best, just hope your team can do him proud and get into the Prem cos thats where Granty deserves to be. Good luck Lee you will always be welcomed back at Hillsborough.

A great signing by Laws, I just hope he can push the beast hard,

great signing, the poll says it all

Great signing and at a great price... i can imagine there will be alot of changes now in people's Championship Fantasy Football teams. Mine for one. Out with Swansea's De Vries and in with the Claret's Lee Grant! I'm 50/50 as to whether or not he'll be number 1 though. I would hazard an estimated guess as to say Jensen will start the season in goal, but 1 or 2 mistakes will cost him his place, maybe forever! Nice 1 Laws, (you have to admit he hasn't put a foot wrong this season!) keep up the good work :)

great signing by BL and if the fee quoted is right got him well cheap as for starting against Notts F who knows but i think he will be a good bet unless he's injured nice one.

lee grant was effectively rescued from the substitutes bench when he came to us, signed by laws, if he isnt number 1 (which would be a travesty) then he will be p*sed off

It was late last night when I read it on the official club site, but hasn't Laws said that Beast will start against Forest? He also gave a very candid assessment of Penny.

“Brian (Jensen) is going to have some competition next season and I’m sure he’ll relish that. He has obviously been here a long time and I am expecting him to start the season …. It’s his shirt to lose.”-Brian Laws 27.07.2010

I'd be interested to know how much he had to say about the deal. If it was his choice to go with Laws then having been part of the debacle at Wednesday it says something.

How much is the fee reported to be?

Excellent signing , and it's now up to Jensen to produce the goods. I agree with laws' statement regarding the shirt. As with all outfield players, it's all down to form and results now.

Could it be that Grant won't start just to give him more time to get over the shoulder injury? It was a very frank assessment of Penny, I expect he will be leaving shortly. Great sigining though and a good price. Another midfielder please Brian!
