Burying the First Friendly?

Burying the First Friendly?

We start our pre-season friendly clashes today (Saturday 10th July) with a game against Bury at Gigg Lane.(Kick-Off 3pm)

Clarets fans are reminded that no tickets are now available at the club but if you still want to go, you will be able to 'pay on the day' at Gigg Lane.

The Official Burnley FC website will provide minute-by-minute updates of the game. Shakers Player are also be exclusively covering the game live.

This match will hopefully be the first chance for Clarets fans to see our new signings in action at some point during the game.

So far we have signed three new players this summer-midfielder Dean Marney from Hull, striker Chris Iwelumo from Wolves and winger, Ross Wallace from Preston.

There were expectations we might have added a fourth by the end of this week, with a new keeper expected to be on board but so far there has been no news unless Brian Laws is expecting to unveil a new player at this afternoon's game.

Bit miffed I can't afterall get to this game. Last few pre-seasons we have always looked rusty in the first friendly as you might expect but either way, I wouldn't read too much into either the result or the performance! Just be a chance to see the new faces

Maybe TMP but I suspect Laws wants to pick his best setup early to give them chance to "gel" before game 1. In which case the players should be out to impress in a big way. Expect 100% effort if Laws has got it right. (not sure how optimistic I am)

The Laws version:“We’ve decided to put more game-emphasis into (pre-season),” he said. “Players get fitter through playing games quicker and that’s what we want to do. “We’ve got a big squad of players so we’ll be utilising them all in these pre-season games. We are going to mix and match. “So I’ll be telling the players as much as telling the supporters, ‘Don’t read into any of my formations, other than the fact that I’m trying to get our players fit.’ “That’s the most important thing as you get towards the latter stage of pre-season.” But Laws did add that forthcoming friendlies did give him an opportunity to explore new systems, adding: “We’ve got to be adaptable. We’re not going to be a rigid 4-4-2, certainly not like the World Cup. “We’ve seen in the Championship that teams are very adaptable and you've got to be able to change and we’ve got players who can do that. “We’ll be doing a little bit of work on that, but nobody should read too much into what the team selection is or the system is or whatever, because it’s all about fitness and the players will be looking at their fitness levels first and foremost.”

Did you notice Eckersley mentioned twice?
10/07/2010 14:25:00
No did I Eckersley he must be starting though, a bit worried about no Mears in there unless typo was Mears? I am hoping to get to listen to this through the Bury site.
10/07/2010 14:32:00
Will play two different sides, one in each half according to BFC website. Tyrone Mears not playig although they reckon he's injured!
10/07/2010 14:39:00
No Penny either!! Summat up there
10/07/2010 14:41:00
Bury commentator has just apologised for putting Eckersley twice on the team sheet ;-)
10/07/2010 15:02:00
I do hope we play more 4-4-2 this season, I know you have to be adaptable and all that, but I think were good enough and can always go to a five man midfield if we need to. Im starting to think we should get rid of Mears, don't want him brining the side down mentally. Plus I like eckersley, true he always looks like a red card waiting to happen but sometimes you need that fire!!!
