Rumour Mill-Lonergan Again?

Speculation is once more hitting the local pubs and bars around Burnley, that Preston keeper, Andy Lonergan could be about to make the short journey down the M65 and sign for the Clarets.

The 26 year old keeper has spent his entire professional football career on the books of the club in the town he was born.

He has had a few loan spells away from Preston. Darlington, Blackpool, Wycombe Wanderers and Swindon Town have all used his services on loan but he has only played a handful of games whilst away from Deepdale.

Lonergan is a former English U-21 International but could play for the Republic of Ireland should he so wish due to his Irish grandparents.

It is no secret that the Clarets need another keeper to compete with Brian Jensen and they have been linked with a number of high-profile keepers and some not so high-profile! Diego Penny is still of course on the books as well, but he seems far removed from ever establishing himself in the first team and looks almost certain to be released when his contract runs out if not before.

Laws talking about the transfer situation said:

"I'm delighted with the way things are at the moment and we've still got a bit more business to do. We are still looking to strengthen the team and we're hopeful of bringing more new faces in before we go on tour. A goalkeeper is something we are looking at"

This is not the first time we have been linked with Lonergan. There have been whispers in the last two transfer windows about our potential interest.

I did hear rumblings we were very close previously to signing Lonergan but it all fizzled out. Difficult to guage if the rumour is any stronger this time

Do you know where it came from?

Is he any good? I know his name but dont really know about his ability? I really feel for Penny - I really hope that if he is as far removed from appearing in the team as it seems, he is allowed a loan move ( maybe back to Peru) at the very least.

Lonergan has a good reputation as far as I am aware.

Just the sort of keeper we need, I would expect him to be number 1 with the beast challenging, this is one I hope we get.
