Rumour Mill-Fletcher? Can't Keep Wolves at Bay

Brian Laws is on record saying he is trying everything he can to keep highly rated Steven Fletcher at Turf Moor despite a number of Premier League clubs being linked to the 23 year old Scottish international striker. Wolves in particular, but also Birmingham, Bolton and Blackburn have all been reported to be interested.

Laws recently said after signing striker, Chris Iwelumo from Wolves:

"People may read into the fact that Chris Iwelumo is a possible replacement for Fletcher, which is not the case," said the Clarets manager.

"We don't want Steven to go. But, if he decides to leave, we will replace him.

"We need power and strength because the Championship is a very physical league, hence Chris's arrival.

"But I'm still looking for a goalscorer to complement my squad."

The Club's determination to try and keep Fletcher would appear to have been confirmed today with a report in the Daily Mail suggesting Wolves had been forced to increase their offer from 7.5 million to 8 million.

There was also an indication that Wolves gaffer, Mick McCarthy may be reluctant to release keeper, Wayne Hennessey on a season-long loan as part of the deal, but may have to do so in order to secure Fletcher's services.

However BBC Sport report that Fletcher is in negotiations with Wolves about a possible transfer from Burnley stating that a fee has been agreed between the two clubs after Burnley gave permission for him to speak to McCarthy.

These talks are expected to continue on Thursday between Wolves and the player, Burnley told BBC Scotland.

If Fletcher leaves I will officially rate Laws alongside Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, just like tmp will. Just another manager who can't keep his best players, Steven Fletcher, Cristiano Ronaldo and Cesc Fabregas. No ambition from the managers or boardroom and I may consider supporting Sleaford Town who have sold nobody!......lol.....p.s. 8Million snap his hand off Brian and Barry plus make sure Fletch is wrapped in cotton wool until we get the cash.
VinRogue
The club talk bull-***** the player will go! Seriously sick to death of everybody glorifying in the loss of a key player for extra money. Someone nudge me with a big stick when we actually have any proof we have gone down stronger. Laws wants to keep him my arse
turfmanphil
8m - brilliant if that is an accurate figure!
Claretdale
We don't need 8 million we need Fletcher FFS!!
turfmanphil
TMP - I see what you are saying but please please please just look at it from the other angle for a second. To me, Fletch is worth about 5m, If we get 8 - brilliant. Instead of Fletcher, but 3 x 2.5m players into our team. For arguments sake - A goalie, A centre half and a central midfielder. Which would make the Burnley team stronger? Those three additions ( obviously depending on who they were), or Steven Fletcher?
Claretdale
You are imo 100% wrong tmp, Laws does want to keep Fletcher and I refer to my first post on this thread, Wenger wants to keep Fabregas and Ferguson did not want to lose the best player he had. However if losing Fletcher gives the club the money to strengthen all those areas that conceded 80+ goals last year and of course Fletchers great contribution of 8 goals for, then I am prepared to accept 8Million wongas for him.
VinRogue
'The Club Do Not have to Sell'-from the horses mouth! If Laws wants to keep Fletcher then bloody well tell Wolves to feck off! Money to strengthen?FFS how much do we need, we have just spent a season in the top flight which was supposed to produce megabucks allowing us to go down stronger, we are supposed to be getting 16 million parachute as well. The only reason we should sell Fletcher if is if he wants to go and if he does it makes a mockery of his earlier statement that he would be willing to stay and help the Clarets get back to the top flight
turfmanphil
tmp, hohw much would you accept for him? 15m? 25m? 40m? 100m? Or would you reject the whole lot because we said we don't need to sell?
ClaretClaude
Guys i can see both sides of the argument, Tmp the Club don't need to sell and VinR how can you turn down 7.5m. My view is that what ever Fletcher has said reguarding staying somewhere along the line his head has been turned to the bright lights of the Prem. I think we all agree that we would like Fletcher to stay even the Club but one man does not make a team and if he or his agent want to move so be it. What ever statement is made by the Club or players at the end of the season i would take with a pinch of salt, so let the player and the club get on with making the right decision for both parties.
Fedupclaret
It looks like the club has stopped at 7.5 million. LT say he is having medical at Molineux. Nobody is going to go as high as 15m CC.It would be a much better world if club, manager and player didn't spout bollox ie lie!! WE WILL SELL TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER is nearer to the truth
turfmanphil
HRH Claret Charlie has just posted his views on the situtation in the Ze Burnley Legends thread in the World Cup forum on this site. "I just don't believe it!" I am merely his loyal subject.
Couch Potato
I know nobody is going to 15m but I was making the point that I'm sure there would be a value you would say we have to take the money as it is too good to turn down. 7.5m is clearly not it for you but it is for most people. This is inclusive of the board and management I think, so I don't think they have behaved inappropriately. Fair enough they said we don't have to sell, but this statement will have been designed to increase the value of any transfer. The board making that statement has probably added an extra 500000 on to the value of the transfer. That makes me glad they said it. As for Fletcher what can he do? You would be giving him stick for saying he wants to go I'm sure of that, but you're also giving him stick for saying he wanted to stay! I believe this was probably a genuine statement from his point of view. But if your club accepts an offer and gives permission for contract discussions what can he do?
ClaretClaude
i agree we don't need 8m but need fletcher, but if he does go I hope we manage to sign a replacement but not for the pittance we have been spending.
Totally_Claret
Hindsight features a lot on here and so here is my bit of hindsight. We should have sold Chris McCann to Villa last season and taken the cash.......WHY, because he spent the season out injured near enough......funny old game....get my drift? Ronaldo 80 Million and was out at Real for two months.....agree with CC all the way and follow that line of logic....believing what people say in the football world tmp? Horse Face told us a load of lies....or did he?
VinRogue
How long has this arguement been going on now? Guys go and watch some Roland Garros and come back tomorrow when he's signed for us. You lot falling out over this transfer is not helping club morale. Personally I feel we are wasting a huge amount of money on Fletcher. I would much rather us try and sign good Premiership experience, not somebody who has had half a season effectively. As for you guys. You can get out of the Championship by spending 5 million. We did it. If you invest in the team with the money made (and huge profit...), you can get back to the promised lands - 90 million + - and buy Fletcher back if you want him! Think about it, he could get injured in the final pre season game (touch wood he won't if he joins us!) and be out for 12 months... Wouldn't you rather Nicky Maynard and a few others than just one player!? Just my opinion though at the end of the day.
PremiershipWolf
150% wrong tmp! 8m is a very good deal for a stiker that misses as many sitters as he scores (but dont get me wrong I would still prefer him to stay). But get real, of course Fletcher wants to stay in the Premiership (and you would too in his position) and Burnley cant match premiership wages in the championship-that would just set a precedent for all his teammates to increase their wage demands too. Him wanting to stay in premiership doesnt make him wrong to say that he would like to stay at Burnley. Its also good for Burnleys negotiating position for him to be saying stuff like that
boltonclaret
Agree with you bc and almost agree with PW with one small suggestion, tmp I class as a friend, we are not falling out we just agree to differ on some subjects.....some? Oh ok a few subject! The main thing is its good to hear the other persons point of view, sometimes it can reaffirm your thoughts or challenge them. Plus tmp is big enough to take a bit of stick if you know what I mean!
VinRogue
The club were right to say they DONT have to sell ( if that is the case). The situation is probably that for 7m+ the club WANT to sell. Big difference.
Claretdale
Anyway... the Beast has signed on for another 2.
Couch Potato
Reports saying he is having a medical today and will sign for Wolves tomorrow.
8clarets8
I think what everybody is saying is that Fletch is worth about 5mill really. I'd agree with that, 7.5 to 8 Mill is over the odds for him. I think the club should take the money try and sign somebody like Maynard then a couple of Million pound plus midfielders. If you take a look at our side then we would have a 4 mill striker, Pato is worth at least 1.5 mill, Thommo and Iwelumo Half a mill each, a few million pound plus midfielders and an OK defence. We look stronger than when we went up thats for sure. I know we don't have to sell TMP however, if Fletch has said he wants to play prem football club would be better cashing in then having a player that thinks he could be somewhere better.
skutter169
According to online Daily Mail he has signed for 8 million. Think its all pathetic to be honest. Everybody else pays over the odds to get the player they want so after this it is about time we did. Fletcher said he didn't want to go, just like Tudgay said for Owls last season when we were after him! Laws typically won that one.
turfmanphil
It's looking more and more like he's going, but I still think we should be doing more to keep him . There isn't much point in the argument that he could be injured, as far as I'm concerned, that's true for any player, any time. True, McCann was injured and we missed him but he's now recovered, still young and ready to do a sound job for us next season, as Fletcher would. Still say it's a big mistake to let him go, but I think he'll be gone this time tomorrow and we can argue about something else :-)
WelshClaret
Its on the official site he has gone for an undisclosed fee. Passed his medical, packed his boot (left one only) and gone to Wolves!
VinRogue
Indeed it is. Best of Luck Fletch.
Claretdale
Am starting to get a bit irritated by the constant 'undisclosed' - I see why, Just annoys me. :-)
Claretdale
6.5million is the fee what's that all about?
8clarets8
Oh and Hibs get 600,000 of that?
8clarets8
Still a lot of money, and who knows what else is factored in? What are the moments of his brief Claret career that you remember the most? The Ars goal that wasn't? The Pompey miss? Letting the ball run through his legs to let Eagles score at WHU? His goals there? Setting up Pato's goal against Spurs?
Couch Potato
Will we ever know exactly what it is? But as CP states - It is still a lot of money. Where did you get that figure from 8c8? Moment I remember from Fletch - His first goal for the club at Hartlepool?the chicken dancing? or probably his performance against Villa at home in which I thought he was nothing short of superb!
Claretdale
Someone bought me a bet for Christmas so I had twenty notes on Fletch at 9/2 to get the first goal against Bolton on Boxing Day. He missed an absolute sitter from about three yards. Don't think there is any value in keeping a player at the club who has had his head turned. Wish him well, always seemed a genuine enough bloke to me.
RickersTwickers
The guardian, Daily Mail, sky sports, goal.com, I just feel disappointed by it, for the prices quoted I thought yep he will go but for 5.9million we should have kept him.
8clarets8
HE'S GONE!!!!!!! 6.5 to Wolves!
ruane
I don't think they ever disclose the true amount of the transfer - probably to avoid the taxman and the fact that there are usually so many add-ons and extras that the true figure is not easily worked out until later. I didn't want to see him go but it is unavoidable and we have got a good return for him. It will be interesting to see how he goes with Wolves and I suspect that if he does well and scores goals then we will get more money at the end of the day. Like many of our tranferred 'stars' he probably won't do as well at Wolves and we will buy him back for 500,000 quid in a few years! Anyway at least he hasn't gone to Bolton - hope he gets a few goals against them and sends them down!!
ozjean
Here's the beebwww on the 'how much' question: "Wolves have completed the signing of Scotland striker Steven Fletcher from Burnley for a fee of about 6.5m. The 23-year-old has signed a four-year contract, with the option for a fifth year, after a season with the Clarets. Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said the fee matched the amount spent on acquiring Kevin Doyle last summer." That may seem clear enough, but... the beebwww report also says that Wolves never disclose the actual amount. So the figure given actually looks like an 'I'm not telling' from Wolves and a minimum number from the BBC based on what they guess Wolves paid for Doyle.
Couch Potato
Terrible decision selling Fletcher-1500% right!! What happened to getting Hennessey too? Undisclosed my arse! We have probably been short changed and got nowhere near 8 million. If it is 6.5 million thats a friggin joke! Even 8 m would have been an injustice. Sorry, it is about time this club just keep quiet about wanting to keep players and stop making utterly dumb statements about going down stronger and not having to sell! First test-failed!!
