Rumour Mill-Maybe Maynard?

Press reports today suggest the Clarets have put in a bid of £3.75 million for Bristol City striker, Nicky Maynard.

Maynard scored 20 goals in the Championship last season and would be a quality signing for this division.

He had been linked with a move to Premier League clubs including Fulham and newly promoted West Brom so it would certainly be a coup if Laws could bring the striker to Turf Moor.

New Robins manager, Steve Coppell though appears to have poured cold water on the speculation:

'Everyone keeps telling me there's so much interest for [top scorer] Nicky Maynard but thankfully I have not received a phone call. Long may that continue.', he said only yesterday.

Maynard came though Crewe Alexandra's academy joining in 1994 at the tender age of 7!

Maynard made his full début for Crewe during the 2006-07 season ironically given his chance when Steve Jones moved to Turf Moor.

In July 2008 Maynard signed for Bristol City for £2,250,000; a club record fee.

Now that would be some signing!!! Are we going striker mad? Just wonder if someone else is off other than Fletcher.

Something isnt right - Even if we are selling Fletch I cant see us signing 3 strikers ( 4 if you count the re-signing of Thommo) when we already have Pato and Jay Rod as a back up. Surely we want to keep Pato.

I expect Fletcher to go and we also lost Nugent making two leaving. I think Laws will be looking for one more so we have replaced the two that have/will have gone. Laws is likely interested in both Maynard and Sharp but one he will expect to sign and the other will be a back up choice if we are unable to get the other. Pleasingly I think he is looking at the right sort of players to give us a good chance of getting back to the prem.

We seemed to be linked with an abundance of strikers and on the official site Laws says he want to try and keep Fletcher all quite bizarre.

I think Laws has given up on the idea that we may one day be able to defend, and therefore the new satrategy is to play 4 up top and go goal crazy.

The fee does seem a bit high, but I think he is probably worth in the region of £4 million. If we get £8 million for Fletcher (- a reported 25% sell-on clause from Hibs, meaning £6 milion), that leaves us £2 million to get a top notch player - be that a midfielder, centre-half, keeper or winger! (And that just means we have spent £1 million, and that's before any other "rats" leave the ship - Bikey, Eagles, Elliott, Mears could total well over £5 million, IMO...)

A bit harsh there barnsey nothing is concrete on Bikey, Eagles, Elliott, Mears, so let's be fair they are not rats leaving the ship. I agree with you going for Maynard £4m, there seems to be a dispute as to whether Hibs will get 15% or 25%

A quality player. We're obviously going to be playing 2 3 5 next season.
