Rumour Mill-Cottage Industry for Bikey?

Fulham gaffer, Roy Hodgson is reported to be interested in Clarets defender and midfielder, Andre Bikey.

The 25 year old Cameroon international might be tempted by offers of immediately playing in the Premier League again following our relegation and Fulham would appear to be the second top flight club so far who have the former Reading player on their radar along with newly promoted West Brom.

This is not the first time Fulham have been linked with Andre Bikey. The club along with Stoke City were believed to have an interest in signing him last summer from Reading before he joined Burnley.

It is understood Hodgson could be prepared to offer 1 million which he hopes would be enough to tempt the club to let him leave.

Bikey seemed to be in and out of favour following the arrival of Brian Laws in January so his future at the club might be in doubt should 'silly money' be on the table.

So we dont have to sell? How many players will we sell though? Surely we cant just blindly keep accepting offers because they happen to be 'silly money'' offers? Players still under contract linked with moves away now include Fletcher, Elliott, Eagles, McCann and Bikey. Rather interestingly Mears interest seems to be non-existant at moment but surely that will change? If all those go, we are faced with having to find six replacements before we even begin to think about squad additions.

Lots to get worked up about. Just as well we have 6 fingers to keep count 'eh Phil, as was reported on the beebwww blog called 'Chant of the Season'. I contacted the moderators, who deleted two subsequent posts on the matter, but left up the original selection of the chant as 'one of the season' by their journalist... even though it had not been 'sung' as their site claims, but only texted to the journalist, whcih he admitted. I have been thinking of writing about it to some bigger beeb person, or maybe in WTBM. But I find myself in two minds. Might this be because I have two heads: does the beeb and its journalist, Chris Charles, have a view? Lots to think about... Do you think 6 stories about possible expressions of interest will result in 6 players leaving? Where would Fuham play Bikey?

Don't understand the reasons for letting all these players go if the rumours are right who are under contract, 1 million for Bikey complete joke, so the comment don't need to sell but everybody has a price? I'd like to know what fight the manager is putting up to keep these players. Are we going to let anybody go if the price is right or are these the player who have had a bustup with Laws, from being a team of championship players when we were religated to half the team wanted by Premiership teams makes me think. So the player named in tmp post plus Mears and Blake also has the beast signed his contract yet, its going to interesting to see which players are left, Rats and sinking ship comes to mind.

Doomed I tell you, we are all doomed.....

I would be very upset to see Bikey go, especially for 1 million. However I am not too worked up yet as this is still a fledgling rumour which could amount to nothing. Also this would be a very different transfer to the Fletcher one with regards to the fact that I don't think Laws likes/rates Bikey. If this is the case he wouldn't be sold because we are receiving a silly offer, instead just because Laws doesn't want him. Interesting point about Mears tmp and one I mentioned to my dad yesterday and ee both thought it a bit surprising. Maybe the player reagarded as the 'most likely' to go will end up staying? I like your post CP. Made me chuckle.

Think some folk need to take off their rose-tinted glasses and give em a good clean!! ;-). A club that 'goes down stronger' and 'doesn't have to sell' should be fighting tooth and nail to keep all the players they think will be an asset to us next season and that doesn't mean giving in to the highest bidder. They may well be doing that and we shall have to see. If however we are set to lose all our key players to Prem clubs, then going down stronger is simply bollox. At the moment we could finish up with a similar squad to that which saw us promoted but depleted of its key players so the onus will be on Laws to bring in good quality players to replace them and not just ones that are Championship standard but also those with potential to do a job in the Prem. If not if we do get promoted, we will face a similar situation of playing with Championship level players punching above their weight yet again unless of course this club finally shake off their timidity and put some money behind trying to reap the far greater rewards of survival in the top flight. Marney is an encouraging start but the signing does not exactly have me swinging from the chandaliers and nor would Hulse if he comes when you compare him to Fletcher. A George Boyd or someone of that ilk would get the juices flowing or any 'big name' decent player(s) where we too are prepared to pay "silly money" to get what we want

1m for Bikey seems a bit low - I must have missed the rumour about Mccann and thought we had escaped that due to his injury - Who has he been linked with?
Claretdale
I don't think Laws rates Bikey as one of our best players and so he is not regarded as a key asset. In this case I think Laws would sell Bikey to any club whether they are higher or lower than us and not for the reason we are being bullied into a sale. I personally think we should keep Bikey however as I think he is the best centre half we have and three time the player or Leon 'Can't Run' Cort. I just really don't think Laws sees it that way.
ClaretClaude
I would like to think that the board and Laws would try to keep as many players as possible but like some say if players want to go let them. As for Hulse and Iwelumo are these players going to improve the side as we already have 3 forwards who are the same level or better.
Fedupclaret
Is Boyd not another Eagles/Guerrero type gamble? I am in two minds, do you sign him as a front 3 man or as a wide man in a 4 4 2, balance is important as far too often last season our midfield was shocking, I think he would be a good replacement for Eagles to the squad, but have a word of caution, if Forest are not up for paying the asking price after having him on loan, what is the reason?
VinRogue
Excellent point VR. Are Forest not buying because of a fund shortage? or because he didnt set the world alight? ( I ditn hear much about him in the later stages of the season). Was he just a big fish in a small pond at Posh?
Claretdale
Can't see us selling Bikey for 1 million when he cost us around 1.5. I would accept offers in the region of 3 million. At the end of the day, there is little point in keeping players if they are unhappy or wanting to leave. He's had quite a few clubs already and he is only 25 or 26. That says it all, for me. He will want to get back into the Cameroon squad, and his best chance of that is PL football. Sad but true.
whentheballmoves
I was thinking the same VR, Boyd could well be an useful addition as a wide man on the left, and replacing Eagles if he's going. Then I started thinking why Forest were'nt up for him, is it because as Dale suggests - no funds? As for Bikey, again I'm with tmp on this one. We need to keep all of our top players if we can, especially those who can do a job in the premiership for us as well. Like Dale, I haven't heard anything about McCann either, but he's another one we shouldn't even be thinking about letting go. At this rate, most of our team will be playing in the premiership next season, never mind the one after.
WelshClaret
I cant see us getting 3m for Bikey Barnsey - I think 2m may be about as much as we can hope for?
Claretdale
How much did we pay for Eckersley? The cost of that transfer has to be a good guide on how much EVERYONE is worth. Bikey has to be 2m + a few add ons for appearances and international shirt taking off championships.
VinRogue
Get real, every year players go, no matter what the situation of the club - any club. Ever since Bosman it is impossible and stupid to try to hold onto people if other clubs want them, all you can do is get the best deal. This is different from having to conduct a fire sale of players to all and sundry. It's time everyone stopped moaning so much and started looking at the pros as well as the cons. Blackpool are up in the Prem now and they will do the same as we did, spend nowt much and secure the clubs future for the next ten years. Read all about Crystal Palace and be grateful and if you reckon they are in the minority you are wrong, according to the Independent many Premier league clubs and over two thirds of football league clubs are in severe financial difficulties. Better to be in the Championship with money to buy players than having your ground sold by a bank for redevelopment and your club liquidated by a bloody hedge fund!
ozjean
You wre unlucky to get the drop, you were not the worst team in the league, I think Owen Coyle going affected the way you played and hope that you can get back at the first attempt.

If you want to read about Palace, I just posted a link in the Pompey Watch thread in the Forums section. Click on Vital Burnley Forums at the top of this page, then on Backchat Burnley, then on Pompey Watch. Meanwhile, interesting to note that Jermain Beckford, who many on this site thought wasn't good enough for us last summer, has just signed a 4 year deal with Everton.
Couch Potato
Well said ozjean. I fully agree.
ClaretClaude
The writing is on the wall, and has been for a few seasons ozjean. The interesting point over the next few seasons will be not only how well certain clubs perform but how they'll cope with increasing financial pressure to get their houses in order. Liverpool have already joined the mid table brigade as a result of their plight, with no financial saviour on the horizon to change that. It's a generally sad situation especially for the fans of Stockport, Palace and many, many more but it'll be no bad thing when football finally re enters the real world.
