Agent Touts Steven Thompson to Hearts

Steven Thompson has been offered a new contract with Burnley FC but has yet to make a decision.

One club in particular, Hearts was thought to be interested in signing the 31 year old Scotland international based on speculation in the media last month.

It can be confimed today that Steven Thompson's agent has indeed been in contact with the Tynecastle club about a possible move.

Hearts gaffer Jim Jefferies is quoted as saying:

'We are aware Steven Thompson is out of contract and could be available. His agent spoke to us about his availability and that is as far as it has gone.

'We thanked him for letting us know and then told him we would get back in touch if we have an interest. We are still finalising our targets just now and until we do that then we won't be making any moves.'

There is of course nothing sinister about this, the agent is only doing his job and looking at alternatives should Thompson decide that a new contract at Burnley would not be in his own interests.

It is also possible the agent put out the feelers before Thompson was offered a new deal at Burnley FC.

Jefferies has already declared that a big target man is a priority and an article in the Daily Express today suggests Thompson and out-of-contract Kilmarnock star Kevin Kyle are very much in Jim Jeffries thinking.

Thompson will need to decide whether he feels he will get enough games next season and help our chances of gaining promotion back to the top flight at our first attempt or whether a career move to play in the SPL might be more attractive.

We do need some decisions from the four players over their new contract offers as soon as possible so we know where we are and can plan our transfer targets accordingly.

Agree tmp we need to know who's going to be here, I think there's a big possibility we could lose both strikers Fletcher and Thompson I hope we don't these could be testing times for the Club.
Fedupclaret
You may well be right Fedup. In my opinion, although i dont want to lose Fletch - the loss of Thompson would be more detrimental. If we were to lose Fletch we will receive X ( 5-6-7m?) which can be used to find/purchase a replacement. If we lose Thommo, we get 0 for a replacement!
Claretdale
Reading between the lines it does not sound as though Hearts are desperate for him?

I hope Thompson stays, there are plenty of goals in him yet , but I suppose he's weighing up his options of regular games as opposed to being on the bench. Do you think we'll sell Fletcher if the 6 million offer comes in then? Apparently we don't need the money, but we do need him to achieve a serious challenge, so for those reasons I really hope he stays.
WelshClaret
I am not sure it is essential he stays WC. Yes i agree that Fletch would be a superb player in the championship and would get us 20+ goals IMO - but if we got 6m(ish) for him which was then invested in 2 or 3 2m player - this may be of greater benefit to the team/squad?
Claretdale
Surely Dale we must already have the 6m for three quality players but to lose a player who's going to net you at least 20+ goals and at the right age don't you think its sending the wrong message to the fans.
Fedupclaret
Quite possibly fedup - and yes I agree we probably already have 6m to spend. I was just trying to put across that if we do lose Fletch we will have an increased budget. This 6m may allows us to bring in 2 or 3 Quality players for the loss of 1. It could be argued that this is better for the team/squad. Having said that, I would be delighted to keep Fletch and agree he will score 20+ goals in the championship.
Claretdale
I understand your point Dale, but Fletcher to me is an essential part of a serious bid to get straight back up to the top flight. He's going to get the goals, no doubt of that, and as Fedup says, if we do sell him when there's no real financial need at this point in time, then that really is going to get us all wondering if the desire to get back is really there?
WelshClaret
I think that the four players should have time to think about their options, especially as Burnley dithered about offering them new contracts - not unreasonably until we were certain which division we were in. Hope everyone stays but especially Thompson as I think he is very underated and without Nugent then surely he would get a lot more game time. He and Fletcher are great mates so both would be more likely to stay if the other does I think.
