The Clarets are clearly seeking at least one new goalkeeper for next season. Three keepers were released in the summer. Nicky Weaver, Jonathan Lund and young youth keeper, Danny MacDonald are all seeking new clubs next season.
Brian Jensen has been offered a new two year contract and is understood to be close to accepting a deal. Diego Penny is also still on the books but is clearly out-of-favour at the club.
The Clarets have been linked recently with two keepers, Lee Grant at Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham's Maik Taylor.
We have now been linked to a third!
It is reported in the Daily Mail today that Burnley enquired about taking Wolves goalkeeper, Wayne Hennessey on a season-long loan.
Hennessey began his career as a trainee with Manchester City before being released in 2003.
He joined the youth academy at Wolverhampton Wanderers before signing a professional contract in April 2005.
He was sent out on loan to gain experience and had spells at Bristol City in 2006 and Stockport County in 2007.
Hennessey made his full international debut for Wales in a 2-2 friendly draw against New Zealand on 26 May 2007 and now has over 20 caps to his name.
Injuries to Matt Murray allowed Hennessey to become firmly established as the club's number one keeper in 2007-08, a season in which he was an ever-present. He also that season signed a new contract which would keep him at Molineux until summer 2012.
The 23 year old though lost his place to Marcus Hahnemann midway through last season so a loan move might be a good opportunity.
Whether our enquiry for Hennessey was successful or not is unclear. The Daily Mail gives no indication. The gist of their article is to suggest though that our enquiry prompted Mick McCarthy instead to ask about Steven Fletcher. The enquiry led to Burnley slapping a £7 million price tag on his head in an effort to keep the Wolves at bay!
I suppose also there is now another danger with Wolves knowing about our interest in Hennessey if the rumour is true. They may be tempted to offer Hennessey as part of any deal to take Fletcher to Molineux.
