Rumour Mill-The Danger of Wayne Hennessey?

The Clarets are clearly seeking at least one new goalkeeper for next season. Three keepers were released in the summer. Nicky Weaver, Jonathan Lund and young youth keeper, Danny MacDonald are all seeking new clubs next season.

Brian Jensen has been offered a new two year contract and is understood to be close to accepting a deal. Diego Penny is also still on the books but is clearly out-of-favour at the club.

The Clarets have been linked recently with two keepers, Lee Grant at Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham's Maik Taylor.

We have now been linked to a third!

It is reported in the Daily Mail today that Burnley enquired about taking Wolves goalkeeper, Wayne Hennessey on a season-long loan.

Hennessey began his career as a trainee with Manchester City before being released in 2003.

He joined the youth academy at Wolverhampton Wanderers before signing a professional contract in April 2005.

He was sent out on loan to gain experience and had spells at Bristol City in 2006 and Stockport County in 2007.

Hennessey made his full international debut for Wales in a 2-2 friendly draw against New Zealand on 26 May 2007 and now has over 20 caps to his name.

Injuries to Matt Murray allowed Hennessey to become firmly established as the club's number one keeper in 2007-08, a season in which he was an ever-present. He also that season signed a new contract which would keep him at Molineux until summer 2012.

The 23 year old though lost his place to Marcus Hahnemann midway through last season so a loan move might be a good opportunity.

Whether our enquiry for Hennessey was successful or not is unclear. The Daily Mail gives no indication. The gist of their article is to suggest though that our enquiry prompted Mick McCarthy instead to ask about Steven Fletcher. The enquiry led to Burnley slapping a 7 million price tag on his head in an effort to keep the Wolves at bay!

I suppose also there is now another danger with Wolves knowing about our interest in Hennessey if the rumour is true. They may be tempted to offer Hennessey as part of any deal to take Fletcher to Molineux.

Good keeper, surprised Hahnemann got the Number 1 slot but maybe a Wolves fan could comment on the two keepers

I think Hennessey is good TMP, but I am also a big fan or MH and can see why he would be given the no1 shirt. Isnt Hennessey the keeper who conceded Robbies thunderbolt in our 3-2 victory their in Owens first season?
Claretdale
I know the seasonhas only just come to an end but I am impatient I don't want rumours I want signings and to know who our team is going to be. I would be happy with this one.

Sorry guys and girls but Wayne won't be joining you permanently ... Arsenal came in for him in the last transfer window with figures of 10 million flying around... He's a world class keeper, but his ego got in the way this season , along with a magnificent MH who deserved the starting position! I can't see him leaving on loan either... Sale or nothing, but more than likely... Nothing

What the fcks happened to Nugent, I haven't heard his whinging voice for a while. Living off a tap in for england can't be working for him these days so I think our money's down the drain. Last I heard he was too good to go back to the championship

Lol CP so you have heard about me then my reputation must proceed me then!!!

I am with PW I cannot see this happening, although I do rate him.
8clarets8
Excellent keeper but no point getting excited about this one for the reasons pointed out by PW.
WelshClaret
The thing that worries me PW is that McCarthy may be tempted to offer WH on a season-long loan as part of a bargaining chip to hook Fletcher for less than our asking price of 7 million! I would rather keep Fletch and bring in our own permanent keepers a la Grant or Taylor etc [Edited by turfmanphil]

Agree tmp, a season long loan would be a total waste of time compared to loosing Fletcher. Two obvious points here, the first being we need Fletch to help us get back up and then keep us there, and secondly we'll be going up with no Hennessey! Interesting point from SB 1898 , any news on Nugent seems to have dissappeared into the ether.
WelshClaret
If we get Hennessey plus cash for Fletcher this might be a good deal. A season long loan would be a complete waste of time however.
