Rumour Mill-Finger on the Hulse Again?

Rumour Mill-Finger on the Hulse Again?

30 year old Derby County forward Rob Hulse has only 12 months left on his contract and it looks like the Rams are ready to cash in on the striker this summer.

The Mirror today states that Derby have put their star striker up for sale and expect to receive £1.5million.

According to the paper official enquiries from both QPR and Burnley for Hulse have been received by the club although it is suggested that both Championship rivals think the price tag to be too high considering the player will be on a Bosman next summer.

Hulse signed for Derby from Sheffield United in July 2008 for £1.75m and has previously played for Crewe, West Brom and Leeds United.

This is not the first time we have been linked with Hulse. Brian Laws was understood to have put in a loan bid for him in the New Year with a view to him signing a permanent deal this summer. Derby County were understood to reject the offer along with a similar one from Stoke City.It wasn't clear at the time though whether our interest was more related to the possibility of losing David Nugent and needing an urgent replacement.

In the end of course Portsmouth late in the day agreed to a loan extension for Nugent. Nugent though returned to Fratton Park at the end of this season and is now seeking a move to another Premier League club with Owen Coyle's Bolton being recently linked.

Brian Laws would therefore now appear to wish to rekindle his interest in Hulse.

Hulse has been Derby's top scorer for two consecutive campaigns and last season finished with a tally of 12 goals.

Just get the feeling if Derby want to get shut, that we could and should do better for £1.5m. The Rams finished midtable in 14th spot whereas we are supposed to be going for an instant return to the Prem. Do we really want a midtable club's cast off already aged 30?

Hulse is far from a Derby cast off - it's more the current board's effort to cut our wage bill as he's our highest earner and his age isn't conducive to the club's current transfer/team policy of young/hungry professionals. As a Derby season ticket holder, and having seen a fair bit of Burnley on TV last season, I'd say Hulse is probably better than the strikers you currently have at your club and would be a very good signing for you. His goals single handedly kept us up in the 08/09 and season an played a key role in where we finished this season and I personally will be very disappointed (as will many Rams fans) if this turns out to be true.

Agree tmp what would be the benefit of buying Hulse for 1.5m which I think is very expensive for someone who scored 12 goals in the championship don't know whether he's been injured. With the strike force already at the club, Fletch,Pato, thomo and Jrod would Hulse improve the team unless like reported we could be losing one or two. I would like laws to be looking for at least two quality midfield players first depending on his budget.

This worries me a replacement for Fletch perhaps? having said that he has always scored goals where he has been, I think at Crewe he scored in every other game, time will tell.

Has Thommo signed a new deal yet?

Thanks Alan Ram, with respect fellow Burnley contributors, I would trust the opinion of someone who watches him week-in week-out, than the gut feelings of Burnley supporters. And anyway, it's hardly a done deal is it - they'll be plenty more of this in the coming weeks. Certainly Hulse was popular at Sheffield Utd and probably better in the air than any of our current crop with a good touch to boot. He also knows what it's like to be promoted to the Premier League. It's a bit like fans of other clubs expressing opinion on Steve Thompson. His career goal to game ratio isn't too impressive but what he brings to the team certainly is.

I think this is excellent news....WHY? Well when Coyle jumped ship we had no plan D. B and C ended up at Horwich. So I really don't care if we are showing interest in 20 players and it is reported every day, because I for one want a plan B if Fletch goes, Thomo goes, Mears goes, Blake goes Wade goes etc, until they sign if you are the Manager you have to be thinking of plan B to F imo.

I think Hulse could be a potential replacement for Thommo. I read the most recent ask Bodes and he said on there something along the lines that a couple of those offered contracts would need some convincing. Given Jensen has almost signed and Duff is a known fan of Laws I would expect the implication is that Thommo and Blake aren't sure. Blake I'm not surprised about and I don't think Laws will be, so the news on Hulse may me a signal that Thommoconsidering leaving. Just a thought.

Agree Claude - I would say that If Thommo stays, we do not need to be looking at bringing in Hulse. Personally, I would be happy entering the new season with a strike force of Fletch, Thommo, Pato and Jay Rod. I think those 4 are more than adequate for a promotion push. Of course, if we lose Fletch. . .

Or Thommo, CD... Or, for that matter, Pato, given the way he was playing at season's end. I agree with VR about the need for Plans B-F, and share his anxiety that Susan was a high-risk 'eggs-in-one-basket' sort of a girl.
