The Season So Far-An Idea by Cornwall Claret

Inspired by a suggestion from Cornwall Claret we ask our readers to send Vital Burnley their thoughts about our first season in the Premier League. We will publish these here. All we ask is that you write a few paragraphs about the 2009-10 season from your perspective in a Word Document and send it to the Editor by email to

The Season So Far

As the season draws to a close I am wondering what the fans thoughts are. The euphoria of getting promoted to the Premier certainly carried on into the new season with lots of optimism and memorable matches and results. With entertaining football being provided even the decline in getting points did not seem to dampen the optimism, enthusiasm and a general feelgood attitude in and around the club.

Then the bombshell nobody expected, any club would have been greatly affected but the effect on our team, probably living on adrenaline, was understandably catastrophic and the result predictable. Now that we are reaching the end of the season and survival will be an incredible achievement I have formed my opinion and wonder who will agree with me,

I hope the majority will. It has been an amazing, rollercoaster of a ride and I am grateful to the board, the managers (yes! , even Susan, as he played his part) the players and the fans, because without all of them it would never have happened. I have supported the Clarets for well over 50 years and have come to accept that the joys of success are always accompanied by the heartache of failure, that is the lot of the football fan and has to be accepted by the true fan. Yes, whatever happens I think it has been a great experience and a memorable season. Would any fan, even the perpetual moaners, say that they would have preferred us to have stayed in the Championship?

If we get enough responses, I might think of turning this into a competition for the best article written as judged by the posters via a poll in the forums

Agree with almost everthing that Cornwall has said, rollercoaster Ride more like a space flight. The one thing that disappointed me was the way that Kilby and the board relied on accountants to tell them who was the best man for the job when coyle did a runner. Whats happend to gut instinct, whether it took them 3 months to get the right man everybody would have understood. Saying that would not have missed it for the world.

Agree totally with CC who would of expected us to beat United unfortunately I was still away on my hols and only saw it in a bar. But the memory of my lad although 15 strutted around in his Burnley top. Everyone coming up and talking to us about Burnley and shaking his hand he felt like he'd scored that goal and not Robbie. Then him telling an Everton supporter Burnleys gonna get you and we did. Even when we lost some of the performances where fantastic, like at OT when I just cried as after the performance we put in we just didn't deserve that, it felt like the night Spurs came to town. Finally if there was an award for the best set of fans it should go to Burnley, the way we have got behind them, especailly away games has been like no other set fans and we should all be proud.

Like Fedup I agree with a lot of Cornwall's piece but I suspect we'll have slightly different memories of the season. Think it is a great idea to try and amalgamate these as a kind of Vital Time Capsule though hopefully it won't take 33 years to open it. Do you have a deadline in mind TMP ?

Roller coaster is right Cornwall, and to be honest that's what I expected before we even kicked a ball. We certainly turned the first few fixtures on their head and produced some memorable performances which impressed and surprised more than just ourselves. It's been brilliant to be back after so long , I just hope the ride continues beyond this weekend, but if not, it's still been well worth it.
