Rumour Mill-Would Thompson Take Hearts?

Rumour Mill-Would Thompson Take Hearts?

It is reported in the media this week that Hearts are hoping to lure Burnley FC striker Steven Thompson back to the Scottish Premier League.

The 31 year old played for both Dundee United and Rangers before signing for Cardiff City in January 2006 for £250,000.

At Dundee United, Thompson used to clean Owen Coyle's boots!

It was Owen Coyle who brought Thompson to Turf Moor on the 1st September 2008 in a two-year deal so his contract will be up in the summer.

Both the News of the World and the Daily Mirror claim Hearts boss Jim Jefferies is keen on the Scotland international and wants to bring him to Tynecastle..

Thompson has struggled to get into the side this season for the Clarets making just three starting eleven appearances. Two of those were in cup games against Hartlepool in the Carling Cup and Reading in the FA Cup.

His only start in the Premier League was in the recent home game against Stoke City last month. He has though been a regular on the bench and made a number of appearances coming on as a substitute.

Although Thompson arguably might not be Premier League quality should we get relegated,he could certainly do well for us in the Championship and Brian Laws might be tempted to offer him a new contract.

On the other hand, Thompson might now be tempted to move on and leave on a Bosman.

The Mirror article writen by some blighter called Alan Nixon (We know a song about him!)suggests though that Thompson might prefer to stay South of the Border and will be open to offers in the Summer.

This is in complete contrast to the News of the World who state that Thommo is understood to be keen on a return to the SPL!! Busted or not?

I like Steve Thompson and if he goes I will be sorry to see him leave. He could certainly do a job for us in the Championship and might have to if Fletcher and Nugent both leave should we go down. I wonder if Laws has made any decisions yet on Thommo and the remaining out of contract players. Kalvenes gone, Joey good as gone but that's all we know so far. Wonder if he has two lists. One for those staying if we avoid the drop and one for those staying if we dont?

I'm sure he does have two lists, and would expect Thommo to be on the Champ list but not the PL one.

I agree with CP on that.

Yes, it's called forward planning ! I rate Thommo as well and he can still do a job for us whether in the premiership or championship . When he partnered Chopra at Cardiff, he was lethal but he hasn't really had the games to match that with us as yet. I hope he stays.

If my record of success was equal to the media being right I would be a guarenteed 100% failure. Complete bull***** is the best description of what they write.

Think I veer more towards CP than Welsh on this one. Will never forget Thommo's strike at Reading this time last year but, though he was subsequently said to be unwell, his performance at the same ground this season wasn't so good. Do agree with Welsh that he hasn't had too many games for us so perhaps he feels that a move is required to get more regular football. Ironically, if others leave, he would zoom up the pecking order though that would only ever be as a target man - he'd always need a littl'un to play off him to complement his more economic rate of movement .

I think he is a good championship player and was an important part in our promotion last season. If we go down, I would be disapointed to lose him.
