City game on TV
Our home game against Manchester City on Saturday 3rd April will now be televised live by ESPN. Consequently there has been a change to the kick-off time from 3pm to now 5:30pm.
Jack Cork Called-Up
Jack Cork, our loan midfielder from Chelsea has been called up by Stuart Pearce for the England Under 21 squad. England Under 21s have a crucial U21 European Championship qualifying match against Greece on Wednesday 3rd March. The match will be played at Doncaster Rovers ground, the Keepmoat Stadium.
England are currently unbeaten in the qualifiers and are currently second in their group table two points behind Greece with a game in hand. The group winners and the four best runners-up will qualify for the Euro finals to be hosted by Denmark in 2011.
More Reserves Problems at Accy!
The Reserves have struggled to play their games this season mainly due to the inclement weather and the poor state of Accrington Stanley`s Crown Ground pitch. Our Reserves home games of course are all played on the Crown Ground but so far this season, they have only managed to play one of their scheduled matches.
A recent decision to postpone our game against Liverpool Reserves due to surface water on the Crown Ground following a snowfall overnight caused furore amongst Supporters Clubs and Clarets fans with some calling for a change in the venue and a return to Turf Moor for the second-string games. The main problem was that a midday inspection had given the go-ahead for the match to be played but the ground staff were unable to remove enough surface water in time for the kick-off so a late postponement was announced causing inconvenience for a number of fans.
That was bad enough but to add to Accrington Stanley`s woes they have since had to postpone another scheduled Burnley Reserves match. The reserve game against Manchester City due to be played this week on Wednesday had to be postponed due to Stanley having a first team home game the night before. Our match will now be played on Monday 1st March but the change has only helped the campaign to seek a new venue.
Carlisle on Countdown
Burnley defender and current acting captain Clarke Carlisle is set to appear on quiz show Countdown this week.
Carlisle`s appearance on the show is down to the show's producer, Damian Eadie, a sports fan who also works on TalkSport radio.
'Damian pulled a few strings for me,' he says. 'I started the rumour, he got wind of it, and it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. You could liken it to trying to get a transfer, except that I'm not that kind of player.'
He will first appear on the cult show now hosted of course by Jeff Stelling this Wednesday afternoon (24th February). He is not giving too much away but apparently it has been one of his ambitions to appear on the quiz show despite the ribbing he is now getting from his team mates.
'When we played two-touch football in training, I would get the ball and they would be going 'di-doo, di-doo, diddly-dee' [the tune as the Countdown clock ticks down].'
'I don't know where it stems from, but Countdown used to be an after-school event for me,' continued Carlisle.
'I'm a big fan of Scrabble, and I've always enjoyed the Mensa test and stuff like that. It's about grading myself on a daily basis.'
'I had sweaty palms and a wobbly gob,' Carlisle explained after appearing on the show
Carlisle is no stranger to having his brain tested in public. He was once crowned the Brainiest Man in Football.
This should be great fun to watch, I am just hoping the letters that come up at some point have a j,u,d,a and s in them!
The Mitchell Rumour
Some Clarets websites reported that our physio, Andy Mitchell was about to be poached by Owen Coyle`s Bolton and that this time he would accept the job. Mitch was brought to the club by then manager Steve Cotterill over five and a half years ago. The debacle in January which saw Coyle do the dirty on the club and leave for Bolton whilst taking virtually all the backroom staff with him looks set to continue if the rumours are true. During the time of the upheaval it was thought Andy Mitchell refused to follow Coyle to Bolton but the suggestion now is that he has had a change of heart.
If he does leave it would appear he would take up a similar position at Bolton Wanderers replacing the current Bolton physio, Nick Worth. Clarets fans may remember Worth. He had a similar role at Turf Moor during the 1997/98 season under Chris Waddle who had brought him in from Sheffield Wednesday. He left Burnley in the summer of 1998 joining West Brom before recently going to the Reebok to work again with Gary Megson
Mitch is a highly regarded physio and will be sorely missed if he up sticks. It would certainly infuriate the club who are still smarting from the loss of six members of the backroom staff. It was also reported recently that Burnley FC could be considering legal action over the departure of Steve Davis and Phil Hughes who they believe could be in breach of their contract after following Coyle to Bolton.
Since the rumour broke there has been no official announcement of Mitchell leaving and it all seems to have gone quiet. There were local media reports that Bolton were sniffing around and were interested in bringing Mitchell to the Reebok but to date Andy Mitchell is still on Burnley`s books
The youth team played an impressive game recently at Gawthorpe trouncing Morecambe by nine goals to one. They scored virtually from the off from a corner with Dom Knowles getting the first of his hat trick. The Clarets were 2-0 up within five minutes, Ross Wilson getting on the end of a Liam Newman cross. Morecambe pulled one back but the Clarets responded strongly making it 3-1 after 20 minutes with Tommy Taylor shooting home through a packed area. It was 4-1 after 30 minutes ( a Newman header) and that was the score at half-time.
Knowles made it 5-1 early in the second half before completing his hat-trick to make it 6-1 six minutes later. James Taylor made it 7-1, Joe McKee 8-1 and finally Newman completed the rout to make it 9-1 with fifteen minutes to play! I guess there was some disappointment we did not get into double figures but what a game!
