Brian Laws has signed goalkeeper Nicky Weaver on a short-term contract until the end of the season. Weaver becomes Laws second signing since taking over the hotseat this month and he is expected to go straight into the squad for Saturday's clash with Chelsea subject to international clearance from the Scottish FA.
Weaver will wear squad number 31 on his jersey.
The 30 year old former Manchester City and Charlton Atletic keeper was a free agent after leaving Dundee United earlier this month.
He recently had a spell training with Middlesbrough, but the club decided against pursing further.
Laws and his goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer, know the keeper having loaned him from Manchester City whilst at Sheffield Wednesday in Autumn 2005.
The well-travelled keeper started his professional career with Mansfield Town before joining Manchester City in 1997.
In July 2007, the out of contract Weaver signed for Charlton Athletic on a free transfer but was released last summer before joining SPL side, Dundee United in August 2009 on a short-term contract until January this month.
Speaking about the signing our new gaffer said:
"In the Premier League you need experience in the goalkeeping position and Nicky is a player with an abundance of that. He has played at the highest level and it still only 30.He found himself going to Scotland but left the window open to come back to England and I think he will help support Brian and Diego.
"Once the window shuts, if either of those are injured that's what we have got, so it was important we strengthened in that area."
The signing of Weaver though is bound to cast doubt on the future of Jensen and Penny at the club and is difficult to see all three remaining on our books come the summer. We also have Jonathan Lund.
Jensen in particular looks to be unsettled and is out of contract in the summer. There have been numerous media reports in which his agent suggests 'The Beast' could be signing for a Portuguese club if a new contract at Turf Moor can not be agreed soon.![]()
