Nicky Weaver Signs for the Clarets

Brian Laws has signed goalkeeper Nicky Weaver on a short-term contract until the end of the season. Weaver becomes Laws second signing since taking over the hotseat this month and he is expected to go straight into the squad for Saturday's clash with Chelsea subject to international clearance from the Scottish FA.

Weaver will wear squad number 31 on his jersey.

The 30 year old former Manchester City and Charlton Atletic keeper was a free agent after leaving Dundee United earlier this month.

He recently had a spell training with Middlesbrough, but the club decided against pursing further.

Laws and his goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer, know the keeper having loaned him from Manchester City whilst at Sheffield Wednesday in Autumn 2005.

The well-travelled keeper started his professional career with Mansfield Town before joining Manchester City in 1997.

In July 2007, the out of contract Weaver signed for Charlton Athletic on a free transfer but was released last summer before joining SPL side, Dundee United in August 2009 on a short-term contract until January this month.

Speaking about the signing our new gaffer said:

"In the Premier League you need experience in the goalkeeping position and Nicky is a player with an abundance of that. He has played at the highest level and it still only 30.He found himself going to Scotland but left the window open to come back to England and I think he will help support Brian and Diego.

"Once the window shuts, if either of those are injured that's what we have got, so it was important we strengthened in that area."

The signing of Weaver though is bound to cast doubt on the future of Jensen and Penny at the club and is difficult to see all three remaining on our books come the summer. We also have Jonathan Lund.

Jensen in particular looks to be unsettled and is out of contract in the summer. There have been numerous media reports in which his agent suggests 'The Beast' could be signing for a Portuguese club if a new contract at Turf Moor can not be agreed soon.

Does not exactly excite me. My feeling is Jensen will be the one to go. I think he has lost all heart and has Portugal on his mind. Terrible game against Bolton last night

What an uninspired signing by Laws. Down by Easter.

A bit harsh TMP. I thought he did reasonably well. Admittedly a couple of communication errors... but I wouldn't place fault particularly at his doorstep. DrW - he's a backup. You obviously have very high standards. Look forward to being able to sign all the Watford stars soon! Who would that be then?

He was slow in deciding what to do with the ball when he had it and resorted to hoofing it up to the forwards all the time when had he reacted quickly enough and thrown it to the wing backs/wingers in acres of space we could have caught them on the hop

If we judge him by the standards he set himself last season then The Beast has been struggling this year. But we mustn't forget he has still made some great saves and we haven't defended as well as a team at times which has left him somewhat exposed. Looks like Laws has signed Weaver ostensibly as back up, but with his experience I expect him to be in the starting line up sooner rather than later.

So do we expect Weaver on the bench? as number 1? or behind Penny? Another signing which I am not overly excited about - but we must back Laws!

Our last manager brought in Penny, Eckersley, Easton, Lund, every signing has an element of risk and who knows what will happen next! As at the start of the season, lets enjoy the ride and see where we end up.....

Was Pele an acronym of Penny, Eckersley, Lund and Easton ? No, perhaps not.

So we now have 4 keepers? Seven centre halves? Hmm... Centre midfield?!

..and last night at one point against Bolton we had four forwards on the pitch at the same time-Fletcher, Paterson, Nimani and Nugent-and we still couldn't score!

I am not sure we could do a lot about it with no midfielders left to put on. Wonder why he didnt have Joey on the bench? Was the bench a bit top heavy with Pato, Robbie, Nimani and Thommo all on there?

Lets face it, the signing of Nicky Weaver in his pomp (if he had one) wouldn't exactly be inspiring, however he has experience in the prem and is only 30 which is astonishing. As for Jensen he's been hit and miss all season and for me has had just one good season in the whole time he's been at the club (granted one hell of a season!). Maybe he does have Portugal on his mind as TMP says and if he does then Weaver has to start. Seems as though Penny might be going down the same route as Remco, another forgotten man.

Its the needed goalkeeping signing to give Jensen a kick up the backside that he seems to need every year. Always the same with Beast, new keeper comes in and plays brilliantly, gets settled as number 1 and his form drops off. Weaver must have come cheap if it motivates Beast its a snip.

Unsure on Weaver, but I think your right Skutter maybe Beast needs the kick up the backside to get him back to his best.
