Rumour Mill-A Fox on Clarets Radar?(Updated)

The Clarets have been linked strongly with Celtic's 23 year old, left back and left winger, Danny Fox with some local reports in Scotland yesterday suggesting a fee had been agreed. According to STV Celtic have accepted a bid, understood to be in excess of 1.5 million. It is expected that Fox will now be speaking with Burnley later this week with a view to finalising a deal.

In further developments it is reported in the Daily Telegraph today(Tuesday 26th January)that the Clarets have had a 1.8million bid for the player accepted.

Born in Winsford, Cheshire, Fox is a former England Under 21 international. However with a Scottish grandfather he switched allegiance to Scotland and now has one full international cap for them.He won his first Scotland cap in the 3-0 friendly defeat to Wales in Cardiff in November.

Fox came through the Everton youth academy but never made his debut in the Toffees first team. A loan spell at Stranraer in 2004 followed before his eventual release from Everton in the summer of 2005. He then signed for Walsall and made nearly 100 appearances for the club before seizing the opportunity to play a league higher in the Championship by signing for Coventry in January 2008.

Fox signed a four-and-a-half year contract for Celtic in July 2009 for an undisclosed fee believed to be around 1.5 million but now appears surplus to requirements although he has recently been out with an hamstring injury.

Wonder if this was one of Coyle's targets whilst at Turf Moor in view of the Scottish connection? Sounds a useful addition in view of his left sided roles

This guy was in the Championship PFA "Team of the Year" last season. Doesn't necessarily mean too much but I remember him being decent at Coventry. Versatile left sided player certainly fits the template we are looking for. Maybe he couldn't settle in Scotland?

This lad can play football & can pass the ball, good footballing skills, & has speed, we have a combiantion at the moment in this possition who cant pass the ball who run around like headless chicken out of possition, and every time iwatch them i feel we are going to get caught out, I do not think its fare to mention any names but regular Clarets fans know the players ime talking about

Could be a good addition certainly the right age and we are short of a natural left winger and it looks like Guerrero is not going to get his chance?

Watched a bit of Celtic yesterday but didn't notice if this lad wa splaying or not, my guess is he wasn't. As long as we don't sign that big, hairy lummox Samaras I'm quite content.

As far as I know RT he is still sidelined with injury but he has been a virtual ever-present in the Celtic team since his arrival in the summer

Is this a sign of Brian Laws being quietly astute and recognising our weakness in the left back department? In my opinion we definateley need to strengthen this area of play.

Yes you are Right Brompton Claret, we have not got a proper left back who can play good all round football.

I think we have players who can play left back but not at this level and to this standard. Kalvenes knows how to play left back but has his weaknesses (as Albmaleaf put it, you know what I mean etc!), Jordan was amazing against Arsenal yet too often he is........back to your comment Albmaleaf!

I wouldn't claim to be "quietly astute" but some of us have noticed a weakness at left back for a couple of seasons. It looks as though Fox is an almost done deal. Let's hope he's the answer.

Where is this money coming from? I thought the kitty was almost empty for new signings and yet we are being rumoured with bids totalling about 8-10m!!!!!

Susan and the merry band who left will have left a kitty, without doubt Susan had money available in this transfer window, just not enough to keep us up in his opinion. This would be a great signing. I hope we can sign Nugent too, as I think if its worst case and we go down, we will not lose money on him, as a Championship striker he would be ace and if a PL club came in for him we would not lose money, however I am obviously looking at worst case! Where's the money coming from? Who knows? But there was a detailed article in Guardian by David Conn (who usually seems to know his stuff) around time of AGM, in which Kilby identified a question over whether to allocate next round of cash (which comes in now from SKY etc) to buying players or to ground development. Maybe the Board decide that, if we stay up we can finance buildings from next year's earnings, and if we go down, we won't need new buildings... and we could sell players we spend on now, if the worst came to the worst. Maybe we are about to sell someone now? Maybe Kilby and Flood, who like to keep thier cards close to thier chest, just didn't wnat to go into January with others thinking we were desperate to buy? Maybe, maybe, maybe.

Good points Couch but 1.8 for a defender and 3 for Nugent isn't breaking the bank. Especially as Nugent may end up being a loan. We are likely to loan out a few as well which will no doubt help towards the French lads pay packet.

I like the sound of this kid, just hoping he is more of a left back than wing back/midfielder. As numerous people have said above we do lack quality in this position and I will mention names - Jordan and Kalvenes are good players but just not good enough! As for the money situaton, i believe there had to be some available and maybe add to that the comp money we got for Judas. As for spending 3mil on nugent, surely we have to wait till the summer and see if he scores some goals. If he does he'll be worth the money and we will still be in the prem so the money won't be an issue.

Maybe this is refreshing that Brian Laws has identified this position as a priority. As an outsider looking at a squad with which Owen Coyle had become almost possessive about, it might be a positive thing for the team as a whole to have some fresh impetus.
