Rumour Mill-Bolton want Carlisle?

Burnley central defender Clarke Carlisle will be out of contract this summer and speculation is already mounting that he could be prepared to leave Turf Moor with competition now hotting up for a place in the back four.

The Mirror today link him with two clubs and describe Carlisle as a 'cut-price target'

West Ham is one of those clubs and the other not surprisingly is Owen Coyle's Bolton. A number of Championship clubs are also reported to be monitoring developments.

Carlisle was signed for 200,000 from Watford in August 2007 agreeing a three-year contract.

Duff and Edgar have recently been making an impression in the centre of defence following injuries to both Carlisle and Caldwell. In November 2009, Burnley also beat off competition from Everton and Celtic to sign 19 year old Cork City defender, Kevin Long.It is understood a six figure deal was agreed which would keep Long at Turf Moor until June 2013. The contract though would legally have to be finalised in this January window and it is assumed that has now happened although there has been no official confirmation.

Brian Laws and his predecessor, Owen Coyle were also looking to strengthen that department with one target being Matthew Kilgallon. We failed in that attempt because we were not prepared to break the salary structure to accommodate him. Kilgallon has since signed for Sunderland for an undisclosed fee on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Laws will not have seen Carlisle play yet due to his recent injury but could get the chance soon with news that Carlisle has now recovered from the side injury that has kept him sidelined since hobbling off against Wolves at Molineux last month.

You just wonder if the media are just making obvious links with Bolton because of the Coyle connection. Having said that Carlisle does appear to have been a favourite with Coyle at Burnley. I can remember he did drop him once during a particular bad spell but he did tend to keep him in the starting eleven when fit despite better options maybe being available.

Also linked to Celtic in midweek I believe ,perhaps due to Gary Caldwell leaving for Wigan

Good steady defender, but not premiership quality and not getting any younger or for that matter quicker (remember doyle picking his pocket before xmas??). Think we can afford to lose him, if this Long kid is going to be as good as people think.

A fantastic chap. I heard him on Radio 2 before the start of the season and thought that this is someone that I would want to be friends with. However, as ODE says - not premiership quality. He is too slow in speed and thinking for the premiership.

Don't want to lose him yet.

he's raping and pillaging your club - what a git!

Question is - will he be offered a new contract at Turf Moor ? My guess is probably not with the amount of defenders we have. If that is the case, have no problem with him exploring his options so long as he gives his all when selected. Which he does.

Carlisle was a major figure in getting promotion but regretfully does not seem to be handling the Premier as well, it does seem we have lacked a strong central defender, but, do we have anyone better than Clarke whos comittment is exemplary.

A good pro who's also coped with set backs and personal problems over the years. Good man to have around whoever he's playing for. Intelligent and well spoken off the field.

Carslile is a good solid defender . A big mistake to let him go, if that is the plan.

Carlisle is good when he is good, but when his mind and positional play wanders & he allows players to get passed him he has not got the speed to recover

Agree with most comments, he is a lovely guy very polite (had a chat with him once in Tesco) however is he PL quality dunno, as Albma says when he is good he's good but tends to get out of position a lot and hasn't the speed to recover. ALthough like I have said abbout Robbie in another post, under new manangement he may well flourish.
