'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Is Jensen off to Portugal?

Jensen's agent, Mickey Walsh today has isued a warning to Burnley that the keeper could leave for Portugal on a free in the summer if a new contract is not negotiated.

'He can leave on a Bosman free transfer,' Walsh told the Daily Express. 'He'd love to play for Porto, Benfica or Sporting Lisbon.'

It is difficult to know where the link to Portugal has come from and indeed whether any of the three Portuguese clubs mentioned are remotely interested in the Dane but something has clearly upset the agent.

The Beast is just one of a number of players out of contract at the club in the summer and one wonders if the agent's statement is a passing shot at the bows of Burnley FC following speculation that Brian Laws could be interested in bringing Sheffield Wednesday keeper, Lee Grant to Turf Moor.

The club seem awash with keepers at the moment with Diego Penny and Jonathan Lund on our books and it had been thought that any new keeper coming in would effectively mean one of the second strng keepers would be released.

Jensen is a firm favorite with Clarets fans although does have momentary lapses despite over the last couple of seasons in particular making some astonishing saves and being a regular Man of the Match.

It would be hard to say goodbye to the Beast. he seems like part of the furniture and culture now! Probably his agent trying to hurry things along a bit!

GM cant get that link to work mate, can you check?

Gunnerman's stuff is indeed something to chuckle about while worrying about The Beast. I think there was something a while back about him pointing out that he's the lowest paid keeper in the division, but not the worst keeper. Who was it that posted on here a few days ago that our out-of-contract players were not a major issue for the new gaffer?

TMP - I just typed the letters in and it came up, albeit quite slowly. It's worth the effort, albeit completely unconnected to this thread.
Couch Potato
we all know what agents are, I dont think the club will be in a rush to give him a new contract, I would but only for 1 season as maybe a number two keeper.

What intrigues me most about this story is Penny on more than Jensen? This really sounds like an agent trying to get the best deal for his client. Jensen is a good shop stopper but is 34. Penny (25) who is from what have seen, more than competent between the sticks. Lund? I really don't know much about. Do you really need 3 keepers?
stuarsclaret
I guess we don't have a youth keeper senior enough to play in reserves so Lund was brought in to sit on bench mainly with Penny between sticks for the Stiffs. Keepers play well into their late 30s these days, some even longer so I would hope we could retain Jensen in some capacity. Maybe another one year contract? If we get Lee Grant though that really would put the cat amongst the pigeons

no worries Phil, try copying and pasting this one http://www.arsenality.com/2010/01/boltons-bizarre-plan-to-stop-arsenal.html sorry for the off topic linkage, but it's pretty feckin funny. On topic, might just be his agent touting him around to get a better contract with Burnley? Agents are unscrupulous sods, look at our situation with Fran Merida - his agent basically made up a load of stuff about clubs wanting Fran, while stalling on signing the contract offered at Arsenal just to get more cash out of us. Nightmare.

Seem to have got the lap top up and running! I think we can set the Beast free, its time to be ruthless and sadly that means our head should now rule our hearts on transfers and renewed contracts. I know the Bragga Manager so could ask him for an update! Bragga are top of the league with Porto and Benfica in close contention, Sporting Lisbon are a poor 4th at the moment. Bragga beat my team Academica 2 - 0 on Sunday!

I would keep Jensen but probably as a number 2 keeper if we were to stay up next season. As said above - He is somewhat of a cult figure and it would be sad to see him leave, but is this our heart ruling our heads?
Claretdale
Sooner or later everyone moves on I suppose and inevitably the day will come when Beast hangs up his gloves on the Burnley peg for the last time. Can't imagine he is causing too much trouble behind the scenes and reckon this is his agent trying to ruffle a few feathers, Just hope, IF he moves on, that I am able to see his last game as he has been a truly great servant to the Clarets.
RickersTwickers
Can you imagine that he would get into the first team at Porto, Benfica or Sporting? I'm not sure that he would even get into their reserves. Yes, he is a good shot stopper and a very good goalkeeper for the championship - but not to the highest league quality of most European countries.

Very curious as to why Portugal and the link to their clubs, perhaps VR can indeed do some in-depth research in view of his Portuguese connectons
turfmanphil
The Beast would be good enough to play for one of the top 4 in Portugal. The problem in Portugal is simply the wages, he would not be going to Portugal for the money! Perhaps there are other Danish links in Portugal closer to his heart? I will of course find out as I also know a Portuguese goalkeeping coach for one of the clubs so I will find out how much on average the top keepers get paid.
VinRogue
Just had a complete blonde moment, was just about to email Portugal and then remembered reading above "Mickey Walsh agent". The very same man who played for Porto for about 6 years? The link now is obvious and easily established by Walsh via contacts he must still have with Porto. Probably just a smokescreen to encourage clubs to consider his player.
VinRogue
In terms of Danish connection in Portugal - didn't another Danish goalkeeper leave England to play in Portugal!
heathfieldclaret
More today from Sky Sports (Sun 24th Jan):"Burnley are looking to do a new deal but he can leave on a Bosman," Walsh said. "He'd be good for Porto, Benfica or Sporting Lisbon. "I've spoken to him and he'd love to play there if he gets the chance."
