Keeping Nugent Top of Laws To-Do List

David Nugent our on-loan Portsmouth striker is due to return to Fratton Park on January 22nd. It is understood Pompey want to cash in on the striker to ease their financial situation.

Before the managerial changes Coyle made it plain the club did not have enough money to sign Nugent on a permanent deal and that their only hope was to try and get Portsmouth to extend their loan deal to the end of the season,

Most Clarets fans thought we would lose out simply because Portsmouth are in such dire financial straits they would refuse a loan extension preferring instead to sell the player to reduce their debt.

Our new manager though, Brian Laws only confirmed yesterday as the new Burnley FC gaffer is a keen admirer of Nugent and told the official site:

'David is a terrific player, who I once tried to nick him from Bury when I was at Scunthorpe. But I've watched his career and now he's an established striker, a good one, and we want to keep him here'

The Official Site actually intimate this aim is actually at the top of Laws to-do list.

Laws continued:

'David is a quality player, and when you look for a striker who has a goalscoring record in the Premier League, and they're available, they're hard to come by.When you've found one, keep him, and it's important we do, so we'll certainly be working very hard with Portsmouth and David and hopefully talk him into staying.'

It is thought the main problem could be Nugent's salary rather than the transfer fee so a permanent deal still looks a problem and whether a loan extension is still an option with Portsmouth desperate for money remains to be seen.

Sorry guys any other time I'd say you could have him, but with Dindane off, we would like him back please!!

Do you mean you actually need him to play for you rather than cash in on him? I think that will mess with Nugent's mind to be honest; he clearly doesn't like being at Fratton Park?

Can Pompey pay his wages too. I think he wants to play in the North West and at the moment we can offer him that chance. I feel gutted for Pompey fans that their club is in such a dire situation but I don't see Nugent as your saviour so let him stay up t north!

I don't want him back Gino, I'd only have him back if we can't get the ban lifted.

We need goals from somewhere, and what we have at the moment is pants. I used to hate Nugent, but latter half of last season he came good in my opinion with some ultra-solid displays, particularly against Spurs and Stoke. The money situation is annoying, but I don't think 'cashing in' on someone like Nugent whilst Premiership survival is still in sights is the right thing to do.

Plus loaning him to one of the teams in the relegation dog fight does seem a financial choice rather than a logical choice.

There is a rumour floating about though that Judas is wanting to take him to Bolton for 3m. Woooooooooooo look at you who has some money. Please take Bolton down you are a disgrace!

I hope Laws gets a result on Nugent, it'll be a big loss to the Clarets if he does'nt and even worse if he ends up at Bolton!

It will be a big test of Nugent's loyalty if we are both in the race. Will he choose Burnley or will he go to his lovemaster?

It would be a huge smack in the face to Coyle as well if somehow we pulled this off. I wish I was confident we could but just don't think we have the pulling power compared to Bolton

Nugent always said he was happy at Burnley and did'nt want to return to the bench at Pompey . He's the only player that Coyle could take in January if the 'clause' exists and I would'nt be surprised if negotiations are already in place between Bolton and Portsmouth. Let's hope Laws can convince him of his place in the survival plan and if he can, I'm sure goals will come from this really sharp player.

Was he more happy at Burnley or more happy to play for Coyle? Basically he wants to play in the North West and if Bolton can pay his salary expectations we could easily lose out and I tend to agree with WC, Judas probably already has his claws in him

Not sure about a move to Bolton for Nugent. Do they lack that much upfront to need him? Maybe on their show this season. Not sure how moral would be if they take him when he has had mixed luck elsewhere.

I would have thought Nugent would have been far from satisfied and a bit frustrated at the lack of starts under Coyle. His happiness at being at Burnley just as likely comes from the spirit and camaraderie of the players. Coyle often spoke of Nugent highly but I haven't heard that reciprocated. I wouldn't be mega arsed either way to be honest - he's missed to many chances - but I'd be a tad worried if we don't recruit a striker of some kind. Kevin Phillips at Birmingham would be worth a short term deal for me. That guy is far more natural a goalscorer than Nuge will ever be.

Interesting what LT are saying about Nugent-The chances of Laws getting his man are strong. FIFA regulations mean Burnley are the only club who could sign the one-cap England international this season. The only stumbling block could come from Fratton Park if manager Avram Grant decides to recall him while he operate under a player registration embargo, imposed as a result of Pompey owing money to other clubs.

They've already paid the other clubs today, but not sure what happens to the embargo , so hopefully it might be lifted in which case Grant won't have to call back a player who he knows does'nt want to be there. A bit of good news about the FIFA regulations then tmp , do you remember 'Lawman' on the telly ? Did they sing 'the lawman always gets his man' ? CC is right about possible frustration from the lack of starts, and the missed chances , but he's looking sharper with every game and always gets into the scoring positions. Only a matter of time I think until he gets a bit more luck , and starts appearing on the scoresheet, hopefully ours.

Cuban is correct- Whilst Nuge has looked sharp, he has missed a number of chances. Fletcher is the same, missing to many chances he should have score. This is an area that needs sorting, and similar to cuban - I could take or leave Nuge.

We have Pato back! Nugent will have to agree to 15,000 a week or its no deal.

Of course, Pato never misses chances! My eyesight must have been bad at Chelsea. We do need a real goal scorer - Nuge is not it!

Can't argue about the missed chances , but the more Nugent plays the better he'll get . He hardly played for Portsmouth and has only recently had starts with us . Fletcher the same, his first season in the premiership and he's the 10th top scorer with 5 , or 7 if you count the 2 offsides which were'nt. It takes a while to get used to the pace in the premiership but hopefully there'll be less missed from now on. As hc says, Paterson missed some sitters for both Burnley and Ireland before he got injured but only a matter of time before he gets used to it as well, once he's back. What price Fletcher and Nugent scoring tomorrow ?
