Laws Confirmed as New Manager (Updated)

The club have confirmed Brian Laws is the new manager of Burnley FC and that he has signed a two-and-a-half year deal.

Russ Wilcox, 45, who spent ten years at Scunthorpe and Sheffield Wednesday with Laws has also joined as Assistant Manager.Graham Alexander has also since been confirmed as player-coach.

Brian Laws will be unveiled as the new manager at a News conference at 3:30 pm today (Wednesday). This will also be televised by Sky Sports.

The Official Site give the reasons for Laws appointment and state:

"The Burnley board have been particularly impressed by the way Brian consistently achieved relative success in his former post at Sheffield Wednesday, while operating with one of the lowest wage and transfer budgets in the Championship. The results of a Deloitte and Touche study, delivered at the club's request, confirm that he was top of the list of Championship managers over the period 2006-2009, in terms of delivering the best results relative to financial budgets."

Clarets fans will now be hoping he can continue to achieve this at Premier League level and his first task of course will be to try and keep the club in the top flight. He will certainly have a 'baptism of fire' with his first game in charge at Old Trafford this Saturday followed by the pot-boiler of a match against Bolton at the Reebok. There will also be an FA Cup clash in the middle of those two league games either against Reading at the Madejski Stadium or more likely,Liverpool at Anfield. The two sides play their replay at Anfield tonight.

If Laws can get a result against the Champions or at the very least Bolton who are now fast becoming Enemy Number 1, he will be an instant hit with Clarets fans and that would certainly sway some of the Doubting Thomases (including I have to admit myself at the moment)

His first home game in charge will be against Chelsea so he is certainly not being given an easy life.

The Official site also go on to say:

"We believe Brian will deliver a continuity of the culture to which Burnley fans and staff have become accustomed. As a former Burnley defender, he is especially familiar with the club, the traditions we have and the passion we all share."

Vital Burnley welcome back Brian after 26 years and wish him and his management team well.

We have all had our say about the appointment and I think we can now all move on and get behind Brian and give him our 100% support.

Welcome home, Brian. Good luck. I am with you all the way. And am really impressed by your appointment of Grezza as player/coach... and by what the club has said about you in their official announcement on thier website.
Couch Potato
Interesting bit on Official Site-The results of a Deloitte and Touche study, delivered at the club's request, confirm that he was top of the list of Championship managers over the period 2006-2009, in terms of delivering the best results relative to financial budgets
turfmanphil
no comment, it will be rude,,good luck, and prove me wrong
palsdad
Interesting one that. Cant say that I am overly impressed, but no matter - We must all get behind him whether we think this is a good or bad appointment.
Claretdale
Just to have to give him a chance and see if he can do it in Prem now!
turfmanphil
if we beat man u i will be nice to him. i promise
palsdad
Welcome Home Laws!!!
ruane
I'm gob smacked! will get behind him and will let him settle in before I can comment.
sheclaret
well im shocked. hopefully he'll sign better players for you then he did for us - unless he fancies resigning leon clarke, francis jeffers, darren purse and lewis buxton
mansfieldowl
Please give the bloke time he has a really tough start not my first choice but he has my 100% support.
Grimsby Claret
I hope all goes well. Best of luck to Brian and up is claret and blue army.
ClaretClaude
I can't even be bothered to fake enthusiasm at this. If Kilby wanted the cheap option he could have appointed me. I'm saying no more... just please prove me and the rest of us doubters wrong Mr Laws.
bigclaret
I'm so surprised that so many of you are so negative about Laws' appointment. I thought it was just me. Let's hope that we are proved wrong and not having similar conversations in 6 months time!!
heathfieldclaret
I am 100% behind the new Management Team, I expected us to be relegated this season, I will not blame the new man if that happens. I will expect to come straight back up however and as such Brian Laws you have my backing until the end of 2010/11 season.....p.s. can you get us an away win at Bolton and ensure we are not slaughtered on Saturday...thanks Vin
VinRogue
Will Laws not be God if he gets a win against Bolton and Blackburn. I would love him to succeed, but!!!
heathfieldclaret
VR, as I posted in a Backchat forum an hour or so ago, I really did think it was going to be you, with your nurse as assistant, that was going to be revealed. But my sauce turned out wrong again.
Couch Potato
Did a good job for us in very testing circumstances, with very little money to spend and one of the lowest wage bills in the championship he did a lot better than other managers who spent millions. Plays an attractive game and you can tell he played a lot under Brian Clough, hope he does well and I'll be routing for him anway!! Dependng on how the rest of the season goes could be playing each other again next season, we need a guaranteed 6 points from somewhere lol.
sussexowl
think me and sussexowl have been watching different wednesdays!!!
mansfieldowl
I've nothing against Brian, he's a decent guy, but if I was a Burnley fan id be worried sick! Absolutely clueless.
Danigol_10_SWFC
get ready for playing players in baffling positions and you will beat sheff utd wen u play them
mick66owl
Talking of Clueless has any one told you about our one point from 30 away from home this season. Inability to drop Robbie away from home. Very few voiced how Clueless Susan was away from home this year, but Brian will have to lose every away game we have left to be as Clueless as Susan was.....fact.....Nurse
VinRogue
According to Official Site also-"Laws was always the Burnley board of directors' unanimous first choice for the vacancy "..and breathe
turfmanphil
Great Guy but I have to say hes signings at Wednesday were in general awful! I know he had a limited budget but he signed some right old S**t and left us totally clueless and he lost over 60 games with us and won fewer by quite a way so he didnt do that well... look at the Championship league table. Good luck though hes a decent bloke and not the worst manager by a long mile.
jamesc1905
He came across very well at the News Conference I have to say, now he has to prove he has what it takes but as we have all said many times before we need to get behind him and give him a chance.
turfmanphil
What an opening to his magerial carer with Burnley - Man U, Liverpool(?), Bolton and Chelsea. When will we see what he is capable of and decide if it was an inspired choice or total lunacy!
heathfieldclaret
Great interview Laws came out top of some very good candidates. Can I Just say this to Sheffield Wednesdays fans who have posted on here have you tuned into Sky sports and Talk sport the vast majority of Wednesday fans speak positively about Brian many feel he should not have been sacked.
Grimsby Claret
I can imagine if Laws does well at Burnley and keeps us up, there will be a few red faces on the Board at Hillsborough
turfmanphil
I liked the fact that he said that the players and the club are the most important thing. I do want him to do well and, as turfmanphil has said, am warming to him. He does seem to 'want' Burnley to do well because we are Burnley and not because he is manager.
heathfieldclaret
I'm sure that the Wednesday fans won't like the 'red faces' comment when one considers who their neighbours are!!!!
heathfieldclaret
OK then they might be feeling blue!! :-)
turfmanphil
A much better expression! Let's hope that they are not 'owling with disappointment!
heathfieldclaret
sry but im a owls fan and he should have been sacked at least a month earlier in my opinion. but like other wednesday fans have said, hes a top bloke and wish him all the best!!!!
supersibon
Great bloke and I wish him all the best at Burnley!! He made a few mistakes at Wednesday. Could he have turned our bad run round?? Who knows?? Anyway good luck Brian!
Bognor_Owl
Owls fans do seem divided, rather like we were after Cotterill got the chop and back then we were not even in the bottom places
turfmanphil
TMP - what's with the poll, Surely if you have two pejorative terms (disgusted / disappointed) there should be two positive ones. I'm neither delighted, disappointed nor disgusted. Satisfied might have been a good option. I'm certainly feeling satisfied that the whole situation is now behind us.
cubanclaret
Give Brian our full support, the Burnley crowd lift the players and frighten the oppsition, if not it will be giving the opposition an advantage. But the bull***t fom the management, why not just say they got the best man for the job and leave it up to Brian to do the talking via the players on the pitch because that is where the judgement will come from.
cornwallclaret
Or how about Delighted Daring to Dream Disappointed Disgusted? I would have voted Daring to Dream. But haven't voted on any of the three options offered.
Couch Potato
Changed the poll to summat else now after HC recommended something. Will revisit the Laws popularity poll once he has a few games under his belt
turfmanphil
I thought the press conference was good. I like all three of them.....why? Well in simple terms I know that Barry and Brendan LOVE BURNLEY FOOTBALL CLUB and seem to have done the best they think they can in appointing Brian, who at 17 was in love with Burnley Football Club and seems to be saying I am getting that feeling back and he may just want to take us into Europe and why not? (pre season of course)......
VinRogue
Agree that he was impressive VR
heathfieldclaret
Please can he like nugent more even more than your previous manager did
Super Bock 1898
Super Bock that is pushing it, I think you will be able to offload him to notlob. We have Fletcher, Patterson (almost fit), JayRod (almost fit), Blake and Thomo. Potentially five strikers with Guerrero a possible 6th. They are not all Prem League standard but they are on the wage bill and some have not had a chance to shine yet. Nugent wants to play can we guarantee that? Honestly unsure.
VinRogue
I see you're match fit VR.
Couch Potato
With Laws having a link with Wednesday, maybe he could resign Chris Waddle!
heathfieldclaret
Have only just settled down after a week of trying to work out who the new manager will be, now we have to think about signings. Just can't see Nugent signing. Not sure he is good enough and think he wants to be in the North West more than he wants to be at Burnley. Not convinced Wilshere will come - have heard he has his heart set on a few months at West Ham. Would imagine any purchases will be from The Championship but hopefully we'll be able to get a couple of loans in from other PL clubs.
RickersTwickers
I can see a defender from PL and a goalkeeper from championship. Maybe also a goalscorer - maybe from championship or league one.
