More Rats Leave Sinking Ship-Davis&Hughes

Both Steve Davis and Phil Hughes have decided to leave Turf Moor and follow Coyle to Bolton. Thanks a bunch!

The statement on the Official Burnley FC site reads:

"Burnley Football Club can today (Sunday) confirm that first team Coach Steve Davis and Goalkeeping Coach Phil Hughes have left Turf Moor. They are expected to follow Sandy Stewart and John Henry in joining Owen Coyle's new management team at Bolton Wanderers"

This is yet another bitter body blow to Clarets fans already reeling over the loss of 'God' turned to 'Sod', Owen Coyle. It will be particularly difficult to accept the loss of Steve Davis, someone who Clarets fans thought would be loyal with Burnley blood flowing through his veins.

It looks like those veins now have a big blood clot in them!

Oh well sod them all, lets bring in a much better management team and move forward. They all deserve each other at Bolton!

Is this a nightmare or what? Dare to Dream my arse
turfmanphil
What the hell is happening, I am really begining to think there is a lot more to this than meets the eye.
sheclaret
Agree with She - The loss of Davis indicates to me that their may be something behind the scenes we do not know about. I thought he was claret through and through.
claretdale
Yes,so am I and the rumours I am hearing suggest there is a mega-rift between Flood & Kilby that has caused all this mess. I hope the rumours are wrong,no doubt Nixon will tell us before anybody at the club does! Very angry and god knows what this will do for our players morale and motivation. [Edited by turfmanphil]
turfmanphil
Just what is the lure of Bolton Wanderers? Please tell me!
merlin
Money pure & simple and a club willing to go into mega-debt to achieve survival compared to one that isn't. If there was any justice in this world Bolton would sink without trace into the Championship
turfmanphil
Just a thought who is now going to do training etc while we have no manager, we have a game in less than a week
sheclaret
Oh dear Steve! what a mess this is it go from bad to worse, I have to agree there is definitely something a foot here.
8clarets8
What the ferk is happening club have now announced Chief Scout, Cliff Roberts has left too
turfmanphil
Damn fellas.. why is Coyle doing this>!
JT_daniel
Because he is simply a piece of dog poo!
turfmanphil
You cant blame this on Coyle - They are all grown men and can all make their own decisions.
claretdale
Yeah and I cant wait till they realise they have made the biggest one of their lives!
turfmanphil
Gobsmacked! I was so sure Davis would stay loyal. I have no faith left in any of them - staff, players, nothing surprises me anymore. This is all so depressing :-(
Brompton Claret
We are all gutted BC, you are not alone, gonna hit the Red Wine bigtime tonight so watch out! 75% of our poll thought Davis would stay.Let's face it they all spout bullpoo and are bullpoo!
turfmanphil
Good idea with the wine tmp. I'm snowed in here but sure I could make it to my local for a couple to drown my sorrows!
Brompton Claret
This is not the end of the world. Losing to Orient would have been the end of the world. I thought at the start of the season we would be relegated, I just didn't want us to go down with few points and defeats galore. We are 14th, we have a squad capable of getting more points, we have lost our coaching staff and Susan but and it is a big BUT all is not lost, we must get behind the 11 on the pitch plus those on the bench, get behind those in the boardroom and any new faces. I refuse to be kicked by Susan any more I hope Grezza gets a leading role in the interim. I hope Dobbo steps up to the plate too. Don't look down at the floor, look the world in the eye and tell them we are Clarets 14th in the Prem league and by heck I am PROUD OF ALL OF US still with a Claret n Blue Shirt.
VinRogue
Nothing untoward going on , Coyle wants to take all his staff with him , thats normal for a manager! Cant blame Davis , he was offered a coaching role at Bolton , if he had turned it down and the new managers wanted to bring his own staff in , Davis could have been unemployed !
Bernie Lee
Cliff Roberts has gone as well is there anyone left?
ruane
Stop trying to defend them BL and get angry. We know you have to toe the club line. Davis could have waited to see how things developed before jumping ship,I am sure that ratbag Coyle would have kept the position open for a few weeks. Why be third in command at a club where nobody knows him instead of a similar position at Burnley where he had all the respect in the world and has just lost it all?
turfmanphil
Good to hear those words VR. I phoned you a couple of hours back to see if you're okay. No answer. Various visions came to mind, including what CC2 suggested last night!!! And nothing from you today on here until now, when I got back home. But I should not have worried about you. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Meanwhile... IF there's been a rift between BF and BK could it have been about those emails/texts that Nixon said BF sent to OC saying it was okay to talk to Gartside? Or maybe it was a disagreement about levels of investment? Or maybe it was just one of those arguments that pals get into when receiving wave after wave of bad news. But is it all bad today? Maybe we are on the verge of appointing someone who is bringing in their own team of backrom staff, which is hardly unusual. A Dobbo/Grezza ticket in the meantime would be fine by me.
Couch Potato
We shouldn't describe ourselves as a 'sinking ship'. Let's see what happens withen the new management team comes in. If there's just one thing we should take from the Coyle era, it's to stay positive.
deadball_claret
At this moment we are sinking but if the lifeboats arrive in time to save the Titanic we will be fine! Now we just have to decide who the bloody iceberg was
turfmanphil
If ya want to pull ya hair out over nothing , then crack on !! Davis has a family like most of us , that is where his loyalty should be , so many paraniod haters in the Burnley support , if it was a situation to angry about , then I would be !!
Bernie Lee
Oh and I toe NO line , i'm free to say what I like !!
Bernie Lee
Oh sorry for thinking a club with no management team just two points off the drop zone with the transfer window ticking away and not to mention the loss of a Chief Scout and rumoured ructions at Board level is not nothing. Players next? [Edited by turfmanphil]
turfmanphil
Nice one Vin and I for one (and I am sure many others) will still be a season ticket holder no matter where we are.
sheclaret
Phil - I do not think that being 2 points off the drop zone is a problem. If I had been offered this position before the season started I would have taken it without hesitation
claretdale
Yes or course we will Sheclaret and we will be buying one for the Prem League with Bolton relegated if there is any justice in this world
turfmanphil
I might have taken it had it not been for the circumstances now making it even more difficult to survive, especially when you consider what the motivation and morale is probably like at the club this moment in time including the players in particular [Edited by turfmanphil]
turfmanphil
People were accusing Davis of being responsible for our dire defence not long ago , now its the end of world he has gone!! All it means is that we will have to rush a manager in quicker than we may have liked , Cliff Roberts was useless in my opinion and no loss at all , its a new broom , clean sweep , no need for mass suicides !!
Bernie Lee
This is where the spirit that we have within the club needs to come through. The players need to stick together, stay strong and do everything they can for the club.
claretdale
No one is commiting suicide just concerned and angry that the club appears to be in meltdown. Something is quickly needed to bolster our hopes and steady the ship. [Edited by turfmanphil]
turfmanphil
I hope there will be a statement soon on the Official Site from Kilby hopefully with Flood in attendance. If only Kilby speaks folk will have suspicions and if both are there, body language will be critical. A blind man and his dog could see at their last double act over Coyle going all was not well, with Kilby appearing to blank Flood during the interview
turfmanphil
Thanks for sharing your thoughts BL. And thanks TMP too for putting the deep anxieities that we almost all share out in the open where we can face up to them.
Couch Potato
If BK's body langauge ever that brilliant? I get loads of people who ascribe dark thoughts to me because I have 'bad body language'. Just keeping the debate going...
Couch Potato
Well put it this way, I am not the only one to have said it,it was very noticeable this time. You look at Flood answering the questions and looking to Kilby for support. Kilby looks straight at camera and ignores him! So obvious, more than I have noticed before when they have done a double-act in front of camera
turfmanphil
For my own happiness, I'm going to cling to what CP said being true. Kilby already knows who he is going to appoint (Not Laws) and said person has their own staff. I don't think Kilby's body language was much to read into as even after we gained promotion he looked like an orangutan who had just had his last banana stolen. I find Cliff Robets leaving more surprising than Davis because hasn't he been here over a decade?
ClaretClaude
I think we should rename Coyle The Pied Piper of Burnley!
ClaretClaude
If Roberts is as useless as BL makes out, makes you wonder why he lasted so long!
turfmanphil
I do not demand that BK and BF be best of buddies tmp. They and I emphasise THEY have got us to where we are now. If they agreed on everything it would be a poor show. One does the interview in an open neck shirt and one looks smart.....so what? I for one back both of them for all that they have done for our football club. We might be playing Boston United next week without both of them. I have been on the phone to Couch who thought I had got hold of shaving equipment and we both ended by saying if we are in the Championship next season we will still be Clarets. Just maybe if you are Steve Davis you don't want to be on the interview list knowing you will not win against say Curbs. Anyway I hope CP enjoys walking the dog and the fact he has got me to turn on the generator to get the lap top working! UTC ps Its going to make Old Trafford a bundle of fun!
VinRogue
He was sacked under Stan then brought back by Cotterill , cant answer why he has been here so long , but many thought he shouldnt be here , he spent most of the time in the Burnley dug out , but if you prefer to think he will be missed then fair do's!
Bernie Lee
When I was a kid and got nits, they used to shave your head, apply the ointment and get rid of them. It was radical but worked. Good riddance to the lot of them but let's hope the next lot are better. One wouldn't bet on it but you never know.
jjokocha
Flood and Kilby falling out would seem to put the cherry on top of a bad 12 months for Brendan. If the Board are in meltdown it has to be sorted out fast - we can still stay up, we may only need five more home wins. I for one trust Kilby's judgement, he may be too risk averse but other than that he seems spot on with his judgement. Who else ever goes and stays, he has to remain as Chairman or we are goosed!
CrosspoolClarets
Can I also just say that only in Burnley could we completely c0ck up an unexpected promotion and all it brings. It's not gone yet but is showing all the signs of heading that way.
CrosspoolClarets
Bk is not, I suggest, "risk averse" given the amount of his own money that he's put in the club over the last ten years. He obviously does want Burnley to have a club in the next ten years, in the Premiership or out of it. Recent events suggest that his thinking is correct. His relative caution is to be admired.
jjokocha
Some of the rumours floating around on various messageboards, which I must admit I find hard to believe is that Kilby was furious with Flood after apparantly the latter was willing to offer Coyle everything he wanted to get him to stay which would obviously have been a pretty high financial package. It was allegedly all done behind Kilby's back while he was on holiday [Edited by turfmanphil]

NEVER MIND BOYS YOU CAN ALWAYS COME BACK IN ANOTHER 30 YRS OWEN COYLE IS GOD
bdjscnp
What a black Sunday this has turned out to be. I Thought better of Steve Davis (Jim Thomson takes his place now in my all time Burnley XI) Davis would of been kept on in a Coaching role I have no dougt about that he would not of got the sack. Owen Coyle is fast replacing John Bond in the harm he is now doing to the club. Steve you are making a big mistake throwing your lot in with Judas. and the other traiters. A very sad day indeed. Lets bring in a new Saviour of our Club as soon as possible but he must be the right man. As I said before the only people loyal to our club are the fans, including Barry and Brenden.
Grimsby Claret
Go three places left of 'G 'on the the keyboard and replace the 'G' in God with an 'S' as you will find out if any club in the top flight come in for him after you start enjoying life in the Fizzy Pop league next season
turfmanphil
Crosspool - I think Derby cocked up an unexpected promotion into the Prem far more than we look likely to, even on this difficult day. They lost 4-1 at home to Scunthorpe yesterday, and even before that many Ram fans were calling for son of god (Clough) to be crucified.
Couch Potato
Its a gamble/risk who ever gets the job.
Grimsby Claret
None of this surprises me as Coyle had obviously built a strong team at Turf Moor and they were always likely to stick together. Timing is a nightmare but we have to look forward now and maybe a seige mentality could make the team stronger. Is taking time for us all to get used to this and one of the reasons, I suspect, is that we have always got rid of our managers in the past - this time it is the other way round. I do feel sorry for Barry Kilby. An ordinary, genuine bloke and fan who happens to have done well in his business life and suddenly finds himself having to compete on the same stage as some of the sharks that pervade Premier League football. That might mean he has to poach a manager from another club and, if he does, it is inevitable that that man will have to bring in his own team because there is hardly anyone left. Another worry is that there is no-one around to take training tomorrow so hopefully senior players like Grezza, CC3 and Blake will show their mettle. Dobbo too may have to dust off his track-suit for a couple of days.
RickersTwickers
I believe Dobson is actually now in charge and is being helped out by Pashley, Caldwell & Alexander. Thats assuming my club contact has come up trumps
turfmanphil
Re-assured by that at least. Hopefully that means the players can, at least, get together at training and start to prepare for next weekend's trip to United. I shall wear my Martin Dobson lapel badge with significant pride in the corridors of power tomorrow.
RickersTwickers
Yep,he was right. Now confirmed on Official site
turfmanphil
I half expected Dobson and Pash as there is nobody else left. Mind you at this rate those two will be at Bolton by Wednesday. I'm not surprised by Alexander either but Caldwell I wasn't expecting.
ClaretClaude
When Caldwell was in the SKY box for the Spurs second leg he came across as potentially a much better manager than player.
Couch Potato
Been thinking about this for a few minutes. Could it be that the club are close to making an appointment and have told Davis et al that their services wouldn't be required under the new regime ? IF that is the case, you can hardly blame them for upping sticks.
RickersTwickers
That did cross my mind but then had the game gone ahead yesterday Davis was supposed to have been in charge so if an appointment was imminent they must have only known about it today?
turfmanphil
Also RT - If a new man was imminent, I dont think they would have announced the quartet that would be looking after us this week.
claretdale
Good point Dale
turfmanphil
Fair points lads- though the official site only says 'until further notice'. Suspect Davis etc saw the writing on the wall anyway. Wonder what The Beast is thinking about losing his mentor Phil Hughes ? Never mind Big Brian - we still think you are great !
RickersTwickers
I bet Penny isn't one on Coyle's wish list!
turfmanphil
Who was it brought Penny to the club? By appointing an Interim team not only do the fans know what is going on but the players will be also chomping at the bit. I think Caldwell had to get the same mention as Grezza because he is the Captain. DOBBO can have his fun at Old Trafford for me with our new Manager to be watching the game from the stands. We have nothing to lose at Old Trafford, I for one will look forward to it, plus I will bet here and now Robbie will not start.
VinRogue
Penny is one of Coyle's signings.
ClaretClaude
As was Remco Van Der Hudini. What happened to him?
ClaretClaude
Oh yes Remco the all Claret hide and seek Champion, maybe he will be Susans first signing and then Penny!
VinRogue
If Remco left us that would be the final straw. How on earth would we cope without him ?
RickersTwickers
bit of humour Rt - I like it :-)
claretdale
Some say, he is that elusive he can't even find his own legs. Others say he is missing because he's single handedly supporting the cricket field stand. All we know is he's called the... can't remember anymore.
ClaretClaude
I actually knew about Hughes when Coyle went, he's a friend of a friend of a friend. But I couldn't say. For him its purley finaically motivated and to be honest I can't balme him in that regard. I am shocked about Davis. However he may be thinking that if the club don't appoint him now they never will, so he is off. To be honest its just made my anger towards Coyle worse, he's ripped heart out of the club. Dobbo in charge isn't too bad and I really expect Grezza to step up. See him taking over Davis's role! Come on Grezza.
skutter169
In relation to BK and BF. They are allowed to have fall outs, I'm not sure if something has happened. To me it just looks like Coyle left and he took his whole coaching staff with him like most managers do. Cliff Roberts is a shock! From what I heard Coyle left as we were on the slide, didn't hae a prolific striker and there was'nt much chance of us signing one, so he went. I'm very down at the min.
skutter169
I think Grezza has most of the coaching badges needed, if he coaches like he speaks and if he motivates like he trains and if I can stop writing if I think he will be with us for a long time.....IF..
VinRogue
Sod it I'm now feeling the anger! Damn you Susan!!!!!!!!!!!! Steve Davis you broke my heart!!!!! Damn them and Up the clarets!!!!! Grezza for manager!!! Or Stevie Coppell!!! NURSE......
skutter169
God work skutter. Keep all the negative energy on Coyle. Without doubt he is engaged in a psychological campaign to weaken us in a head-to-head battle to stay up. Don't help him. Keep taking the tablets and atack his always weak and now damaged ego at all opportunities.
Couch Potato
My Nurse is available should anyone feel the need post the 9am SSN unveiling of Boltons Got Talent Winner SueBoyle....I have done with her for a while and will remain calm throughout it.....I hope
VinRogue
I to remained clam through the smug gits press confence, I had to I don't think hubby would of been pleased to see the tv smashed to bits when he comes in from work tonight.
sheclaret
Please dont tell me he was in a Bolton tracksuit.
turfmanphil
Unbeleivable garbage spoken by this monster. Are we really expected to believe the following tosh-'I've never been motivated by money in my life,' he said. 'If it was finance I would have taken the job at Celtic in the summer. That is just a knee-jerk reaction from people that do not know me." Oh dont worry we know you all right now
turfmanphil
Bolton fans. I haven't seen the interview yet, but it sounds like he's just churning out the same old stuff that he fed to us till his actions finally forced us to take a harder look. By all means innocently enjoy the ride he's already started taking you on, but - a word of advice - start getting ready to be disappointed as soon as things start not going his way.
Couch Potato
No TMP he was in a suit. I found the it all abit me me me in what he said. What I did notice was Mr Gars...., make a bit of a blunder stating when we spoke last Friday or was it Saturday.........
sheclaret
Watched the snippets of the press conference on SSN. "How I turned down Celtic because I was waiting for the "mighty" Bolton Wanderers." Dope! Had a right laugh at his "I'm not motivated by financial gain" but contradicts himself with "There's more money to spend here." Eh? That's right out of the Harry Redknapp Philosophy Book, that is. Truth is Owen Coyle had the opportunity to prove that not only could he take a team up to the Prem but that he could keep them there the next season. Truth is he BOTTLED it. That's why he moved to Bolton, pure-and-simple, wants to look the Big Man if he saves Bolton and doesn't want to take a hit to his image if Burnley didn't make it. Fear fuelled by wads of cash waved by Gartside under his nose motivated THAT move, trust me. I know it all stinks but don't waste anymore of your time on him.Move on and get your management sorted PRONTO.
julieloveshenry4ever
What a great post,Julie! Love it and so true
turfmanphil
Also what the hell does Coyle mean by this?-"There were financial restraints and an embargo placed last January, which meant I could not bring a player in," he said. "No-one was aware of that, not even my staff. I kept that to myself and got on with it."
turfmanphil
There was an embargo in place because we had not paid for Eagles. Who did or did not know I obviously cannot say.
ClaretClaude
Cliff Roberts worked at turf moor when i did over 10 years ago,for him to just to up sticks and leave now reeks off problems at the club, and Stevie Davies is a Claret through and through so what the hell is going on
spaldingclaret
Welcome to Vital Burnley,Spalding. You will find a few Clarets on here from the Lincolnshire area. Tell me more about your job at the club 10 years ago? My hope is Bolton just offered CR summat better although one of our posters based at the club now (see BL above)reckoned he didn't do much in those ten years at Turf Moor anyway
