Rumour Mill-Gary to Join Brother Steven?

Celtic defender, Gary Caldwell has once more been linked with a move to Burnley.

The Scottish News of the World today believes Owen Coyle will be keen to sign the 27 year old in the January window and that he will able to meet Caldwell's wage expectations.

Caldwell will be out of contract at the end of the 2009-10 season and will be allowed to speak to interested parties in the New Year.

The Scottish International is understood to be after a significant pay rise but according to the News of the World he is only currently on 8000 per week anyway.

Caldwell is quoted as saying:

'I have had talks with Tony Mowbray, but I am not going to reveal what I said. However, I can say there have been no new developments concerning my contract.'

It is understood he would want to double his salary and that this figure would not be too far away from the reported 15,000 cap that Burnley FC have applied to salaries.

Should Gary come to Turf Moor, he will of course be joining brother Steven and that would certainly make the fight for back four places even more competitive and may even test brotherly love to the limit! Caldwell is also the stand-in captain for Celtic when Stephen McManus isn't playing so there could even be rivalry to lead the team.

The paper goes on to suggest that Coyle could make a bid of around 250,000 during the transfer window rather than wait and get him on a free Bosman at the end of the season.

This is not the first time we have been linked to Gary Caldwell and the rumour refuses to go away.

Gary Caldwell came through Celtic's youth system before joining Newcastle United in 1997. He was eventually given a free transfer after a number of loan spells and joined Hibernian during the second half of the 2003-04 season. He signed a pre-contract agreement to join Celtic in the summer of 2006 and has since made nearly 100 appearances for the Buoys.

Heer we go again. The Scottish media are full of this, almost wishing it to happen. His agent is probably working overtime trying to scare Celtic into renewing his contract on double salary

Will we sign another defender?
Claretdale
Gary and Steve didn't look very solid when paired together for Scotland against Norway! Any sign of Edgar these days? Or are we keeping his profile low till the arbitration is done and dusted?
Couch Potato
Have a couple of Celtic friends who have been saying they would love to get rid of him. They are both not fans of Gary! Anyway why would we need another defender when we could always get Remco out of the drawer he is hidden in to cover if short!!!!!
VinRogue
Caution Owen. The scottish team is very poor.
Grimsby Claret
Like Vin i've heard from our celtic friends they would gladly would drive him to the Turf. another one said it would be payback for giving us Mo Camara lol.
ruane
Celtic taking Mo was comedy. He was only just a good enough left back for Burnley!
Claretdale
I reckon they would have had a better chance converting Mo into a midfielder/winger. He often got up there, his main problem being he couldn't get back into defence quick enough on their counter attack.

I can remember Richard and Vince Overson but have any other sets of brothers played for The Clarets ? David Miller and Derek Scott doesn't count !
RickersTwickers
Not played together but both the late Walter Joyce and his son,Warren played for the Clarets. Some think also Stan & Ray Ternent were related but apparantly not

I have a very dim memory of something about some brothers in the first Claret year, or soon after. I don't have my Chronicles book on hand to check this, and therefore might be imagining it, but will start looking tonight, unless someone else does beforehand, round about our fixture against The Clowns, I think it was where I read this. This could be embarrassing if I am completely wrong!!! :)

The problem with Mo Phil was that when he got into the position to cross - It normally went into the stand!
Claretdale
Mixed opinions on this by all accounts! I find myself sitting on the fence with this but edging more towards him (probably Agent) trying to squeeze out a better contract at Celtic! I am surprised nobody came down from Vital Celtic to comment?

Good point 8c8, the Celtic lads are usually on here like a shot when their team is in the news. Probably still in shock after Rangers beat 'em!

It would appear French club, Nice are now in the running for Caldwell and are prepared to pay 1m

Am still hunting, unsuccessfully and rather unenergetically, through my Claret Chronicles for evidence of other Claret brothers. My enthusiasm is also waning for bringing Gary on to the Turf.

caldwell won player of the year in scotland last season, has captained celtic and has won the spl title a couple of times, while playing in the champions league several times as well as international caps.he is only 26 i think,so for next to nothing in transfer fee,and within your wage structure, you cant go wrong. he wasnt had a good season with us this year.new manager, although did captain hibs under tony, along with this contract talk, has effected his game.he does switch off at times, but can carry the ball out of defence.never know coyle might get the best out of gary.
