David Nugent Has Signed On Loan

David Nugent is coming to Burnley from Portsmouth on a six months loan deal with an option to buy.

This was a frantic last minute deal before the transfer window closed at 5pm today and all parties are hoping the paperwork via the fax has all gone through in time.

The 24 year old striker, has one England cap and started his career with Bury before moving to local rivals, Preston North End in January 2005 for a fee of £100,000. The Clarets at the time under Steve Cotterill were also hoping to sign the striker so things have now come full circle.

In July 2007, Preston accepted a £6 million bid for the player with Sunderland also believed to have put in a similar bid.

Nugent though has made just 34 appearances for Pompey scoring only 3 goals and had been expected earlier in this summer transfer window to be joining Middlesbrough on loan.It would also appear Hull City were interested in the player and that today we beat the Tigers to his signature.

We did need another striker! I like the loan with option to buy bit, Nugent has alot to prove. I don't think he has been given a chance at Pompey hopefully Coyle can build him up and get him banging in the goals!
skutter169
If this is true it might not be a bad signing. Has struggled for games at Portsmouth and, if his last minute miss against City is anything to go by, needs a few games under his belt to regain his sharpness. Only question is, who will OC leave out ?
RickersTwickers
Didn't see that one coming!! Lets hope he can ecome a goal machine
sheclaret
Don't think anybody saw this coming even Sky!
turfmanphil
Prepare for a world of dissapointment.
footy_fans
The Clarets are though still awaiting confirmation that the Premier League received sufficient paperwork by the 5pm deadline
turfmanphil
(Pompey fan here): I hope he does play well for you guys, as he has been given every chance to play well here, but seems to have failed more or less everytime. He just needs to sort out his finishing, as that last minute attempt against City proved. Good luck with him.
.andrew.
Sky just confirmed everything now gone through and the loan has been completed
turfmanphil
Would be interested to understand his wage demands. Storey said that Hull were a possibility for him also but he chose Burnley. Should go down well with the Nobbers!
Ansdell Claret
Yeah the Nobber connection does make me smirk!!
turfmanphil
I heard this on talksport earlier Preston were also interested in bringing him back! I think this is a great move he is on loan let's see what he can do for us :-)
8clarets8
Rather interesting Hull were also up for him. Wonder if it was a case of well you wont pay for Cousin's salary on loan so we'll nick Nugent off yer instead!!
turfmanphil
Nah i think Hull have been linked with half the Premiership this summer. A case of nobody wants to go there ha ha
8clarets8
Id rather have nugent than Cousin, he sounds like a sulker to me! Nugent might want to come back to north west as thats where he feels most at home?
skutter169
Probably hoping to get some games in the Prem too, which he wouldn't have done at Pompey. Might still have hopes however forlorn of making the England World Cup 2010 squad
turfmanphil
Will this mean a move to a 4 4 2? Nugent and Pato or Fletcher? We do appear to have some options now, if Grezza is anything to go by then this could be a real good loan and why not aim for the WC2010 squad.
VinRogue
I agree with Skutter that he seems a better option than Cousin, and the option to buy is definitely the right choice. Let's hope that he's up to it, and that he proves anb astute signing by OC. Well done on keeping it quiet til the last minute, too! :)
BarnseyWTBM
Quite agree with Barnsey this is typical Coyle keeping the real deal quite until the last minute! Bring on Liverpool is what I say.
skutter169
At about 1020 this morning, someone called celaycock texted this to the beebwww: "DRAMA! Forget rumours about Nottingham Forest - former Preston North End striker David Nugent is back at Deepdale. He's just driven through the car park to his old space and quickly hopped out, with a big smile on his face. This is it, North End fans. This is it." Oops, sorry tmp, probably shouldn't have cut and pasted that in here from the www.bbc.co.uk. But, enjoy! And I encourage everyone to use the BBC. It's brilliant. Don't let their rivals and the politicians steal it from us!
Couch Potato
I wonder if the chance to buy him price has already been fixed? i would hate for him to do well then find out we could not afford him!!
8clarets8
A lot of endeavour and enthusiasm, cannot knock his work rate, but boy, is he shocking in front of goal, and he did get some prolonged (too long!) spells in the team. He didnt even have a great goal scoring record in the championship. Tommy Smith who we have bought now is by far a better finisher but unfortunately for us is still only c/ship quality so while we havent gained loads i'm afraid you havent either. Keep your car stereos locked up too!
Super Bock 1898
Options to buy, 8c8, would usually mean that if an agreed price is met, that's it, the deal is done. But they don't rule out offering less. That would just put the player back on the open market.
Couch Potato
Keep your car stereos locked up too!! Super Bock 1898 i know he is scouse but a bit harsh ;-) or did i miss something there? with it now CP i wonder what sort of figure we would be looking at? thinking around the £1.5 £2million mark for me?
8clarets8
H e will just warm your bench as he did at Pompey.....Quite happy to sit back and take the money....
quietman
I think saying quite happy to sit back and take the money is out of order as he was full of enthusiasm and wanted to be out there, he just isnt that quality needed in front of goal, no composure at all, but will give 100%
Super Bock 1898
Not sure if this deal is done now? getting conflicting reports that this was done at 5:30 and is subject to Premier league clearance? surly the loan rule would kick in or does that kick in next week?
8clarets8
He's an intresting one... For the club that is bottom of the league, that has been in the market for centre forwards (but didn't sign one) due to lack of decent strikers, to be loaning you a striker should speak volumes. He WAS given chances, and couldn't take them. This season, he HAS got into a number of good positions, however his shooting has been so woefull, it almost made me cry.
pompeycarpet
His attitude has been baffling. he has got into a number of fights with other players (defoe, wilson... ), has stubornly refused to be loaned out in order to get first team football, even though it has been aparant that he is no-where near our first team (well, when we had crouch, defoe, utaka, kanu all ahead of him), however he has been prepared to put in some work when he has been on the pitch. He could prove to be a good signing for you... although I wouldn't expect miracles, and I certainly wouldn't expect goals. or assists.
pompeycarpet
He will run about all day long, but as has already been mentioned his finishing is shocking. He loves the nightclubs aswell so expect to see him out on the razz. What you guys will notice is that everytime he missess he just stands there and has a stupid grin on his face.He has been given chance after chance but still no end product.
JASON R
What you guys fail to miss is we have him on loan for six months if he is no good Owen Coyle won't sign him simples! i personally think he may want to get his career back on track? i think our kind of play may suit him? who knows time will tell? if he does not work out he is back to your place! no loss to us!!
8clarets8
Exactly, 8 - if he doesn't do the business, no harm done. If he does, maybe we will get him until the end of the season. Let's wait and see. Can't see OC tolerating his alleged nightlife etc!
BarnseyWTBM
Agree with you Barnsey and perhaps what the lad needs is a complete re-focus on what made him a choice for England only a few years ago. Our team ethic and of course OC will make or break him from the downward spiral described on here by Pompey fans.
VinRogue
Seem to remember people saying similarly negative things about Anelka. Football history is full of examples of players not cutting it at one club, then being reborn at another. Then again, it's also full of examples of players not cutting it at one club, then not cutting it at another, and another, and another. Franny Jeffers, for example. Que sera. Come on David!
Couch Potato
As I recall he seemed to bang some in against us when he was a Nobber, hopefully he will no bang them in for us!!!
sheclaret
I like Nugget... seems to get in good poisitions... his first touch against Citteh was great it was only the volley let him down. With a bit of faith and confidence he SHOULD be a solid Prem striker... he's still 4 years off being in his prime.
jim4pompey
A good Championship striker. But this is the premier league, bit worried about the Portsmouth fans saying he cant finish/ Score Still he's only here on loan. Wish him well though, I would like Thommo to be given a chance too.
Grimsby Claret
I should imagine the one person who is the most narked at the moment is young Jay Rodriguez who doesn't even make the bench these days. It would appear he's now dropped even further down the pecking order?
turfmanphil
I think he's a great signing. As turfman says, it is interesting with Hull being linked aswell, It might have been a case of "You can have Cousin on loan if we get Nugent in." And Coyle then decided that Nugent was the better option and pinched him... I wonder...
ClaretsMad122
One thing Brendan Flood's book does well is give a flavour of what it's like behind the scenes when the sort of thing that CM122 talks about is going on. CM122's speculation sounds distinctly plausible, but maybe we'll have to wait for the sequel to find out what actually happened! Meanwhile tmp has asked me to write a review of Floodo's book. There's a lot you can say about it, and I am feeling brave! :)
Couch Potato
It's getting even more convoluted now regarding Hull, they have now signed former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink on a two-year deal. He was another striker linked to us
