Clarets International-Caldwell Major Doubt

Steven Caldwell was one of three Clarets players along with Alexander and Fletcher recently called up by George Burley for Scotland's two crucial World Cup 2010 Qualifiers to be played during the International break.

Scotland need back to back victories over Macedonia and Holland in September to stand any hope of making the 2010 World Cup in South Africa next summer

Caldwell though has not played for the Clarets this season after picking up a groin strain in Scotland's previous qualifier against Norway in Oslo, a week before the Premier League season kicked off.

Owen Coyle, although the decision is taken out of the club's hands does not believe the Scottish Medical team will pronounce Caldwell fit enough to play.

He told the official site:

'I would imagine Steve will travel to Scotland but I would be very surprised if he is fit to play. He will go up there and see their medical team, but my thinking is that hopefullya week on Monday he will be ready to resume training'

Mixed feelings about this. There is no denying the stupid FIFA scheduling for the last lot of Internationals caused Caldwell's problems in the first place and could have scuppered our chances in the Premier League had we not signed Bikey. Rather ironic he might now spoil Scotland's chances of qualifying due to injury especially since they will be short in the back four with brother Gary also out following his sending off in Oslo. Still not Scotland's fault but the tits who scheduled the matches so badly! What is important is that Steven Caldwell makes a quick recovery and is available to play for us soon. The Scottish medical team better have the club's interests at heart too and not risk playing him if he has borderline fitness.

Bikey has been called up for Cameroon now too and could play in two WC2010 qualifying games so we better have one or both fit by the time we play Liverpool on 12th September

Caldwell is expected to undergo medical tests at Scotland headquarters today before pulling out of the squad.

We dont want Caldwell injury made worse by playing for Scotland, Scotland are to blame for his injury anyway.

While it is great to play to be called up and play for your country, I would prefer our players not to be called up (sorry lads) as we need them fit for our Premiership games
