Rumour Mill- Keeping Ben Alnwick?

Rumour Mill- Keeping Ben Alnwick?

Owen Coyle is trying to tempt Tottenham into selling £1m-rated goalkeeper Ben Alnwick according to the Sun newspaper today.

Most Clarets fans would find this difficult to believe but if true does tend to suggest the club might not have too much faith in second-string goalkeeper Diego Penny.

Penny has made just one appearance for the Clarets since signing from Peruvian side Coronel Bolognesi in June 2008. He was expected to become the first choice keeper and was given the Number One shirt.

He made his debut for the club in the opening game of the 2008/9 season on 9 August 2008 against Sheffield Wednesday.

We got tonked 4-1 that day and although the problem was more defensive errors in the back four, he was instantly dropped and has not played for the Clarets since.

Brian Jensen though has been in awesome form and has not suffered any injuries keeping Penny sidelined.

Ben Alnwick is currently out on loan with Norwich City but went off injured during last night's 4-1 defeat to Sunderland.

The 22 year old was an England Under 21 International and started his professional career with Sunderland.

Alnwick joined Tottenham Hotspur for £900,000 during the January Transfer window of 2007 with Márton Fülöp going the other way for £500,000.

He has since spent a number of short spells out on loan. Norwich is the 4th club to take him on loan but he has also had loan spells at Luton, Leicester and Carlisle.

Clarets fans may well remember Alnwick. He made his debut for Tottenham in the Football League Cup semi-final second leg against Burnley at Turf Moor last season. In July 2009 however he signed on loan at Norwich City for three months.

Surely not. Am not convinced about Penny at all, but spend a million on a back up keeper when we have one?

Oh dear what does that say about Penny if this is true? Wouldn't have thought this to be a priority?
25/08/2009 09:51:00
have to say I think we would be willing to sell, but I am not sure Alnwick would swap a squad place for another, regardless of where this was. I think he will be looking for first team football, bot another back up role. The other stumbling block is that with Gomes injured, we may still need him as cover as we only have a 20 year old keeper on the bench as back up to cudicini.

He was shocking at TM - there MUST be better options out there?

The Sun came out today, did it? I will just stick here on Vital Burnley and get the real news. But doubtless the rumour mill will be busy across the next few days.

Hey, for example, have you heard this one? Some Spanish La Liga club has come in with an offer for our experienced international second string keeper, who would obviously prefer to be playing every week, and Burnley have kept quiet about that... while the agents of keepers we are looking at to fill the resulting vacancy have not kept things quiet at their end. Yes, that's right. I made it up. But maybe it's true? By the way, did anyone read the Express this Sunday? There was quite a good long piece about Coyle, albeit mostly just churning out stuff off Bfc's website. But in it the journalist made the claim that Turf Moor has hardly changed since we were Champions of England 50 years ago. Apart from the rebuilding - what is it? - 3 stands since then, this is surely all the proof we need that journalists make occasional errors. A bit like keepers, you could say. But where would we be without either of them. :)

Do you think Penny's days could be numbered either way? He looks like he will never break into the first team and just wonder anyway whether he could hack it in top flight. He must be getting fed up too, he's a million miles from home and isn't getting any first team action to keep his mind off it. It would take an injury or an incredible reversal of form by Jensen to give him a chance and I just sense that Coyle might be worried should anything happen to the Beast. Has anyone seen Penny play in the reserves? None of us can really guage whether he would be OK for us if called upon to play but it is a worry

It's plausible, I suppose, that it's reached one of those points when, without anyone doing anything but holding each other in the greatest of respect, it is just time to move on? As they say in South America, que sera! But what kind of keeper would anyone rather have warming our bench? I guess that these days there is a trend to feel more comfortable with someone who has been around the block a few times. Did I hear someone say Gabor Kiraly, for example?

Jensen getting injured is a frighten'ing thought.

Penny was praised by Coyle for his performance against Hartlepool. More I think about it, if he was worried about Penny, he wouldn't have released Gabor. In Coyle we trust?
