Rumour Mill-Russell? Darel Do Again!

Rumour Mill-Russell? Darel Do Again!

During the transfer window last Summer one of our targets was reported to be Norwich midfielder,Darel Russell but nothing came of the move and Russell remained with the Canaries.

Of course both sides back then were in the Championship but by the end of the season, Norwich had been relegated to League 1 and Burnley were in the Premier League for the first time.

It would appear that Russell might now be keen to move to Turf Moor and it is reported today that Burnley have already enquired about the 28 year old.

Their valuation though was believed to be below that of the Canaries and any further movement on this is unlikely to take place while the powers that be are currently sunning themselves out in America on the Clarets US Tour.

Preston are also understood to be interested, although their initial offer was also below their valuation according to media reports. The attraction of the Premier League though would certainly be in our favour in any battle with the local rivals.

Russell is in the last year of his contract, and it is thought that the Clarets would be unlikely to offer more than about £500,000 for the player.

He began his career as a youth player at Norwich City but found it hard to establish himself in the first team. He was signed by Stoke in 2003 for £125,000.

Russell played right back initially for Stoke before being moved to right-midfield and central midfield.

In July 2007, Russell rejoined the Canaries signing a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee (reported to be about £400k)

Not sure about this now, maybe a good signing at Championship level but can he hack it at Prem level at 28?

Cant say I have been to many Narch matches! ;-) I know the Norwich fans seemed to rate him based on the last time we were linked to him

I think he was their runner-up player of the season

Rusty will be class for you lot. Good engine and can't fault his commitment on the pitch. 500k would be a bargain. Since we went down he made it clear that he rated himself higher than league 1 and did not travel on our tour to Scotland. Good luck in the Prem and hope you complete the deal. ;)

I agree with TMP - admittedly I dont know much about the player but, I would have said he would have been a good signing had we not gone up, but we have - not so sure!

Doesn't get my imagination racing, but I know nothing beyond what is said here, so who knows. Maybe his agent is just trying to drum up other offers? Maybe he'll join the squad.

Russell's agent, Gary Mellor, has confirmed Burnley have had a bid rebuffed for Russell and that a number of Championship clubs are also on the player's trail. "I understand Burnley made a bid for Darel that was turned down by Norwich," Mellor told skysports.com. "Burnley tried to sign Darel last year and I know Owen Coyle is a big fan of him.Burnley are not the only club chasing Darel as there are several Championship sides keen on him, including Preston. Darel has one year to run on his contract and he has enjoyed his time at Norwich, but he would like the chance to play at the highest level. It is unlikely Norwich will keep Darel and we hope a solution can be agreed between all parties."
