Wigan Now Gets Second Burnley Target

Wigan Now Gets Second Burnley Target

Hamilton Academical midfielder James McCarthy has agreed to join Wigan Athletic for a fee of about £1.2m rising to £3m depending on appearances. Wigan expect the deal to be concluded within the next 24 hours.

The Clarets had also been linked to the player some weeks ago but their bid was turned down. A number of clubs had been linked with the player including Portsmouth and Celtic but of late the higher bids by Wolves, Wigan and Tottenham Hotspur appeared to have priced the others out of the market.

Wolves in particular appeared to have won the race to sign the 18 year old whizz kid only last week after the Accies accepted an offer and allowed the player to have talks with the Wolves gaffer, Mick McCarthy.

It looks like the shorter distance to travel from his native Scotland may have been a factor in his decision to join Wigan but either way Clarets fans can now scratch another name off the list.

Roberto Martinez has now snaffled two of our targets after also signing Jason Scotland for £2 million recently.Scotland signed a 3 year contract with Wigan last week (pending international and visa approval)

Gave up on this one a couple of weeks back to be honest after Wolves and then Wigan entered the race. Pity!

To be honest, this is not a surprise, and we need to get used to this sort of scenario. The facts of the matter are that we are a small PL club, and "even" Wigan are well-established with much more resources at their disposal than we have. £5 million for these two is a big-gish gamble, and one that we could not afford to take. I hope we get at least 2-4 more signings in - just don't ask me who! Maybe a CB, GK, LW and either CM or CF...not much to ask for, eh?! ;)

Summer holidays is it Barnsey? Enjoy. So, turfman, are you saying that Scotland needs a visa to move from Wales to England?

To be honest I think it's a case of copying being the sincerest form of flattery. Whoever OC targets it seems Wolves and Wigan move in for. I don't think they have original ideas of their own but realise OC spots quality players with fantastic value for money potential so they then muscle in. No matter I think Wigan and Wolves will both struggle to avoid the drop and I am fairly confident we will be above both at the season's end.

I think Latics getting Scotland and McCarthy may have more to do with them having worked with our manager and/or assistant manager previously! All the best for this next season.

Cheers Lytham, the Jason Scotland connection is an obvious one anyway re Martinez and he was always going to join his former boss,I reckon. We were just simply outbid I think for MCCarthy and we were not prepared to fork out more. He sounded keen to join us at one time and he would have lined up with his former Accies teammate Brian Easton and been at home with all the Scottish clan involved at the club these days! Oh well, let's see how you fare in 2009/10. Looking forward to reinstating the Wigan v Burnley clashes
