There is an initiation process at Burnley FC that all new signings have to endure and if it goes badly it could be the rest of the team that are the ones having to endure the agony!
In the days when Frank Sinclair was captain, this little ritual was introduced and quite simply involves the new signings serenading the rest of the squad at an appropriate dinner table. The tradition has been carried on by current captain and sadist Steven Caldwell who is probably a baritone!
Nothing wrong with that if you fancy your chances on X-Factor, but if like me you can have the audience on the verge of committing hari-kari just by singing one verse of 'No Nay Never' then there is no hope!
It would appear we have one new signing dreading the day when he has to prove his worth in the singing department and that is Steven Fletcher who we recently signed from Hibernian for a club record fee.
"I'm a bit nervous about it to be honest," said a hesitant Steve.
"My voice is terrible. All the new lads have to do it, but I haven't picked a song yet. I'm going to have to get something on my ipod and practice."
Gawd I know how he feels but shall we try and help Steven out with a few song suggestions? Have your say in the comments box below this article and provide your suggestions.
I suggest he tries 'My Way', everybody crucifies that song and another awful rendition would almost be expected.
Chumbawamba's 'I Get Knocked Down' would also be a good choice in anticipation of having to get up again following the groans of derision.
I wonder if he can whistle? A song by Roger Whittaker could ease the pain.
Yeah well you get the idea with that!
