Third signing for Clarets-David Edgar

Burnley have today signed 22 year old defender, David Edgar from Newcastle United. The Canadian Under 20 International has agreed a four-year deal at Turf Moor.

Because the player is under 24 though Burnley are currently in the process of trying to agree a compensation fee with Newcastle after his contract expired yesterday.

Edgar's agent Barry MacLean told Ontario newspaper The Record:

"I`d say he`s pretty happy. We are looking for him to play regularly at this stage of his career. For him to play regular first-team football is critical for him."

Edgar is Burnley's third summer signing following the news that Tyrone Mears and Steven Fletcher joined yesterday.

He will wear shirt number 15

I was getting worried when we hadn't signed anybody, a left back would be great and if I'm greedy another centre back!

“I got an offer from Newcastle a couple of weeks ago, but to be honest my mind was on Burnley anyway,” said Edgar, who made 11 appearances last season, scoring one goal. “I love Newcastle - I have done since I was a little kid - so it was tough, but when it came to football there was no other option for me. At this point in my career I felt it was time to move on and the gaffer here was so enthusiastic about having me, the way he wants to play football and how he sees me playing, and it was just too good to turn down. I said to my friends and family that it’s good to be at a place you’re wanted, and the gaffer definitely made me feel like that"
