'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Oi Adam,It's Burnley not... Real Madrid!

In last week's Sunday tabloids, Burnley FC were reported to be interested in bringing Middlesbrough winger, Adam Johnson to Turf Moor and the Sunday People also suggested we may have offered £2 million for the player.

The 21-year old England Under 21 International will be out of contract in 12 months time and could be looking to play in the top flight after the relegation of Middlesbrough to the Championship last season.

How amusing today to hear therefore that Burnley, in the top flight for the first time since 1976 could now be competing with Real Madrid to sign the player!

Well there you go, Ronaldo from Man U to Real Madrid? Baa that's nowt compared to 'ickle old Burnley fighting it out with the high and mighty La Liga Spanish club!

The Sunday People today report that Adam Johnson is in shock after being linked with Real Madrid. He thought his mates were winding him up until he saw it for himself on TV.

He is quoted in the Sunday People saying

'I'm obviously honoured to have been linked with a team like Real Madrid. Even to just be linked with them is unbelievable for me.I had a lot of the lads giving me phone calls telling me I was going to Real Madrid and I was like 'You're winding me up' The transfer window isn't even open yet, though, so I'm just getting on with England and trying to show what I can do.'

Johnson is currently preparing to play for England against Germany in the final of the European Under-21 Championship tomorrow.

Come on Adam why would you want to sit on a bench in the bloody hot sun for Real Madrid all next season, when you can come to the cooler climate (Cough!) of Turf Moor and play every game?

That did make me titter! These rumours are getting more bizarre by the minute
turfmanphil
The most bizarre part is the bit where you think you can buy a player that is better than Stewart Downing for £2 million. . .
smoggieboon
We have debated this before, Boro im afraid will now have to live with the fact they are in the fizzy pop league and I dont think any club is going to pay more than £2-3 million for a player of his calibre but we shall see.
turfmanphil
Those quotes and links with Real Madrid are at least 6 months old and stem from when Juande Ramos first took over, but lets not let that get int the way of a good story. As for his future - if no club wants to pay more than £2-3m thats fine - we're in no rush to sell. If he helps us straight back to the premiership at the first attempt and then walks away for nothing that is still good business for us, and if someone wants to offer us his true value (£8m+) then we'll think about selling.
paulofyork
£8 million? You are having a larf! We got £4 million for Kyle Lafferty, a full NI Internatonal this time last year and that was a good deal! Well its up to you, take £2-3 million now or lose him on a Bosman next Summer. Unless of course Real Madrid want to pay silly money for him and keep him on the bench if hes lucky?
turfmanphil
Comparing Kyle Lafferty to Adam Johnson is just silly. Keep a copy of this to look back on in 5 years time.
paulofyork
Like I say up to you (or rather Boro)!
turfmanphil
"Like I say up to you (or rather Boro)!" - which is exactly why he won't be joining Burnley or anyone else for £2m

Hmm, I think he will end up going for around £4 million...but not to us.
BarnseyWTBM

It mentioned in the Lancashire Telegraph today that Real Madrid were also interested in Steven Fletcher too! could this be a case whoever Owen Coyle is after Real Madrid think he must be a good player ;-)
8clarets8
Fletcher could be close to signing for us for £3 million plus add-ons if reports in Scotland are true
