Rumour Mill-Now 1.75 Million Bid for Tudgay

Media news today in the Sunday papers suggests that Owen Coyle is keen on bringing 26 year old Sheffield Wednesday striker Marcus Tudgay to Turf Moor and may have already put in a bit of 1.75 million.

The striker came through the ranks at Derby County and made his senior debut for the Rams in August 2002.

Tudgay joined Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee in January 2006 signing a contract up to 2010. The Owls manager at the time,Paul Sturrock decided to sign the player on a permanent deal after initially having him on loan.

He has since scored 36 goals for the Owls in 134 appearances, a scoring rate of 1 goal every 3-4 games.

Last season he was the Owls top scorer with 14 goals in the Championship.

Clarets fans will certainly remember Tudgay from last season too after the Owls defeated the Clarets both home and away despite our promotion to the top flight.

In our opening game of 2008/9 we were tonked 4-1 by Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsbourough with Tudgay scoring two goals with his first coming within 30 seconds of kick of!

It didnt get any better for the Clarets at Turf Moor in the return match back in February this year. This time we lost 4-2 and that man Tudgay once more got a brace!

Tudgay although predominantly a stiker can play in many other positions mainly on the flanks and did so for the Owls last season. He impressed so much that the Owls fans and the club awarded him with many Player awards at the end of the 2008/9 season. He won the Fans player of the month awards for February and March 2009 and the PFA Fans Championship Player Of The Year award, as well as being named the Sheffield Wednesday Player of the Year.

It will be interesting to see though if the rumours are true whether 1.75 million will be enough for Sheffield Wednesday to consider selling one of their star players. It is understood that Owls gaffer, Brian Laws is keen to extend Tudgay's contract and has already offered his star striker a new deal. It is believed he has accepted a new three-year deal that will keep him at Hillsborough (in theory at least)until the Summer of 2012. He was supposed to have officially signed the new contract after returning from holiday at the end of May.

Tudgay though may feel now it is time to move on, especially if there is an opportunity to play in the top flight.

Very interesting link! Just wonder what chance we have of signing the three strikers now Tudgay,Fletcher and Scotland or whether Coyle is hoping just one comes up trumps

all these rumors are making me laugh! nearly all of our players have been linked with differant clubs now, like laws and strafford have said WE WONT BE SELLING ANY OF OUR BEST PLAYERS UNLESS A MASSIVE OFFER IS PUT IN. i dont no why it says his contract is due to run out nxt season?? hes just signed a new contract, he was one of first to accept his new terms.

Has he actually signed it then? The last report on this was about May 18 when it said that the new contract will be officially signed when he returns from holiday at the end of the month?

Yeah afraid so... Tudgay has already signed a new contract as far as i know and if we were gonna sell him (which i'm sure we won't) i think it would require a lot more than the measley 1.75m being banded around!! On the other hand... Scotland would be a better out and out goal scorer for you... whether he would cut it in the prem is another thing tho!

1.75m he's worth that just for the goal he scored against the pigs !

Well as folk keep saying to me,contracts are not worth the paper they are written on and maybe Tudgay thought nobody from the top flight would be after him when (if he has!) signed it! The chance to play in the Prem could tempt him away

I think Coyle might be more interested in Tudgay since he can play more of a utility role. If we finish up with a smallish squad again, players who can play in more than one position could be vital

Oh dear now up on Rivals Owls site: It was announced shortly after last season ended that the Owls number seven had agreed a deal to stay with the club and extend the contract which expires at the end of the forthcoming season. But there has been no pen put to paper as indications are it was only agreed verbally and Tudgay would sign on his return to pre season training this week.

Wednesday club statement read: 'Sheffield Wednesday can confirm the club has not received a formal offer from Burnley Football Club for the services of Marcus Tudgay, contrary to recent media reports. 'As a club, Sheffield Wednesday wants to build a competitive squad around players like Marcus Tudgay, with the aim of reaching the Premier League together. Further, Marcus recently agreed a new three-year contract with Sheffield Wednesday, which he is due to sign when the players return later this week, indicating his commitment to the club.' The only relevant bit about that statement is that HE STILL HASNT SIGNED

This one is not over by any means according to skysports.com Tudgay's agent Darryl Powell says the Owls striker would be willing to discuss a move to Turf Moor. "Everything has not been agreed," said Powell, regarding the new contract. "If an opportunity arises, Marcus would like to speak to Burnley. That is nothing against Sheffield Wednesday - which is a fantastic football club - but when a Premier League club shows interest, you want to take a look."
