Rumour Mill-£2.75m Bid in for Steven Fletcher

According to the Daily Mirror today the Clarets have made a club record £2.75m bid for Hibernian striker Steven Fletcher.

Fletcher is supposedly also interesting Wigan and Celtic and in a report in the Daily Express yesterday it was thought our bitter rivals down the road, Blackburn Rovers were also preparing a bid with a £4 million figure quoted!

The 22 year old is a Scottish International forward. He signed for Hibernian as a youth in 2000, came through their ranks and made his first team debut for Hibs in a 3-0 win over Kilmarnock near the end of the 2003-04 season.

He scores on average one goal in 3-4 games and has netted 43 times in 155 appearances for the Easter Road club. He also has four caps for Scotland with one goal to his name.

Fletcher looks an exciting striker but we face tough competition to sign him if the rumours are true.

New Celtic boss Tony Mowbray is understood to be ready to make a fresh swoop for Fletcher. Mowbray previously tried to sign him for West Brom in the January transfer window and knows the striker from the time he managed the player at Easter Road. According to last Sunday's Mail, Mowbray could be about to bid for a player rated at about £2.8 million. Both West Brom and Celtic under Gordon Strachan were after the player in the January window and got knocked backed by Easter Road supremo Rod Petrie.

Now this is one rumour I definitely hope is true. Really does sound an exciting prospect at just 22 and a goal every 3-4 games is pretty impressive. We do seem to have underbid though if the rumours about Celtic and Rovers are true. Fletcher though can be reassured of playing almost every game if he signs for us though compared to Celtic and of course we are talking EPL here not the mickey mouse SPL.

Would this rule out a move for Jason Scotland with arguably a more impressive goal scoring record of 1 in 2 but at the wrong end of the age scale? maybe we could nab both? now that would give a selection headache!

Hibs turned down an offer of £3m from Celtic during the January transfer window, so the likeliness of Burnley's bid being accepted is slim, as Hibees chief Rod Petrie looks for closer to the £4m mark. As well as Celtic, Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers and Burnley, Newcastle United and long term admirers Middlesbrough are keeping tabs on the Scotland forward's situation

I would imagine that £2.75m will be about the maximum we will spend on any one player this summer - Therefore if the bidding is to go higher, I wouldnt expect us to compete.

wwwbbc is now reporting that Hibs's new manager confirms Bfc have made a bid, which he will discuss with his chairman. Apparently Fletch didn't want to go to Celtic, but rather he wants top flight Engliserh football.
