'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Today's Rumour Mill Update-No1: Bobo Balde

Celtic defender, Bobo Balde has today told Sky Sports that Burnley, along with Birmingham have made offers for him.

'I have an offer of a trial with Birmingham. They have asked me to join them for pre-season when they return on 8th July,' said Balde.

'The club have already told me there will be a two-year contract on the table for me if I do well and impress during my trial period.Burnley have also made me an offer, but unconditionally.I will have to have a think about things before I decide my future'

The 33 year old, Guinean International started his career with Marseille, his hometown, back in 1995. He never played once for the club and had two loan spells out to FC Mulhouse and AS Cannes before moving to Toulouse in 1999.

Baldé then signed for Celtic in July 2001 and has since become a regular player in Celtic's defence. At the start of the 2008-09 season though it was announced that Balde could leave Celtic on a free transfer and he was linked with Wolves but they apparantly couldn't meet his salary demands. His contract with Celtic expires on 30 June 2009 next week and last month Birmingham City offered Balde a trial

The link with the Clarets is interesting considering the age of the player and he is certainly not in the 21-24 age group category expoused by Brendan Flood recently as our target for new players.

Clarets fnas are bound to ask whether he would offer anything more than Caldwell and Carlisle at centre back and some could be worried at his long stint without a competitive game after two years in the football wilderness. The Guinean has been involved just four times in the past two seasons at Celtic.

Balde himself admits it could take some time before he returns with the necessary competitive edge:

'I am 33, I have not played much over the last 12 months and I am not in a position of strength. When a player is inactive, they lose the rhythm and habit of duels. This is my case and I must accept it.'

We seem to be going for old crocks or young lads without much experience at moment! Baffling but I guess owd OC knows what he's doing

I think I would be happier signing Williams & Anderson to be honest but I just wonder if those bids have gone tits-up and I also wonder how many back-four players Coyle is aiming for, all the rumours seem to be mainly in that area at the moment

To be honest you could not put a player further away in what i thought we were after? 33 years old, no premiership exp, big big wage!! i would be very surprised if this happened? but then again who knows? oops forgot the fact he has not played for like 2 seasons?

I dont think we will sign Balde - but, as i have said on other threads, we cannot just sign players in the 21-24 age group - we need a bit of balance! The 'old-timers' Grezza and Robbie didnt do to badly last year did they!
