Will Mears Be The First New Signing?

Will Mears Be The First New Signing?

It has been announced on the Official Site that Burnley have had a bid accepted for 26 year-old Derby County defender Tyrone Mears.

'The two clubs have agreed a fee and talks with a view to making the transfer permanent will take place when the player and his representative return from holiday.' said Owen Coyle

Mears currently plays right back for the Rams and has one Jamaican International cap to his name.

Born in Stockport he started his professional career with Manchester City in 2001 before Mears joining Preston in July 2002 for a fee of £200,000 after signing a three year contract. In a bizarre twist of fate he was expected to provide cover for Graham Alexander, now of course a Claret!

Mears signed for West Ham for an initial £1 million in July 2006, rising to £1.9 million depending on appearances! However he only managed six appearances for the Hammers before moving on this time to join Derby County on loan in January 2007 until the end of the 2006-07 season. The Rams liked what they saw and they signed him permanently for £1 million in July 2007, with the player signing a three-year contract.

There however then followed a spat with former manager, Paul Jewell after Mears caused controversy when he flew to France to go on trial with Olympique de Marseille without the express permission of the Rams gaffer.

The irate Jewell stated that Mears would never play for the club again and the player was fined six weeks wages.

It was finally agreed that Mears would go on loan to Marseille for the duration of the 2008-09 season, for a loan fee of £160,000, with the French club having the option to buy him for £1.5m at the end of the loan. Marseille however decided not to sign him permanently at the end of his loan spell and he returned to Derby this month with his future at the club in doubt.

Just hope that action he took which upset Jewell isn't the sign of a bad temperament and potential trouble. Presumably this could mean Rhys Williams wont be returning unless we are going to have four players vying for that spot -Mears plus Duff, Williams and Alexander(when not holding midfield)

I think he would be a solid addition, and if he's not up to the PL, would be more than good enough for the CC! :-)

GC, guess we just have to back OCs judgement on this. On the face of it, he doesn't seem the ideal choice but who are we to argue with God? ;-)
