Fixtures & Fittings-It's Stoke Up First!

Clarets fans eagerly awaited the news of the Fixtures for 2009/10 this morning excited by the prospect of playing teams in the top flight league for the first time since 1976.

Yes we are Premier League now so we were all keen to know who would be up first. It was perhaps an anti-climax therefore when it was announced that our first game ever in the Premier League and our first in the top flight for 33 years would be away to Stoke City on the opening day of the season (Saturday 15th August 2009)

No disrespect to Stoke who did well in their first season in the Premier League last season finishing a respectable 12th. We would certainly be delighted if we could emulate them and finish midtable at the end of 2009/10.

Nevertheless though it is perhaps a less exciting fixture then our next and first game at home 3 days later against the Mighty Manchester United! Phew already?

The Clarets actually face a tough opening schedule in the first two months playing three of the big four although importantly the run-in during April and May doesn't look too arduous if that's possible in this league! In fact in their last nine games of the season they only play one of last season's top seven clubs (Liverpool). That could be crucial if god forbid we are in a relegation scrap come March 2010.

There is also a nice juicy fixture on Boxing Day with Owen Coyle's former club Bolton Wanderers wandering into town setting up an intriguing local derby but not the most important derby!

That of course will be against local rivals, Blackburn Rovers. We wont face them until October when we visit Ewood Park. The return battle at Turf Moor will not be until March 2010.

Of course Sky & Setanta (if they survive!) might have other ideas and start asking for some of these fixtures to be rescheduled so they can televise the matches but at least with this announcement it now really feels like we are indeed a Premier League side.

So that's it then and if you want to know the full fixtures you can visit the Official Site by clicking this link:

Right then let battle commence in the Potteries on Saturday 15th August 2009. Can we get off to a good start I wonder?

In terms of trying to get points on the bored, it's probably the best you could have hoped for. In terms of a "fabulas introduction to the premiership" it's probably the worst (although we would probably compete for that one...). still, you have man u next for that. good luck!

Mr Irony was surely drawimg the numbers for the FA today. But as fixtures go this could be just right for you Clarets. It'll show you some of the qualities that Stoke have needed to develop to stay in the top flight. They surprised everyone I think. But the thing to bear in mind is that the tougher it got, the better Stoke played. The words "Acid" and "Test" spring to mind.

Glad its Stoke first up away as no disrespect to Stoke but played them enough in championship so a bit like a championship game, and since I'm still on my hols not really missing much. But am being punished as not back for Man u game. Why oh why did I book my hols so long ago when I thought we'd still be playing same old teams in the championship.
